Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

I am getting these calls too, saying money I owe that I don't...biggest scammer out there...they tell you they are located in Florida but the one guy has a heavy NY accent....very degrading call, threatening me with all kinds of actions, calling me names etc...I just hung up and blocked them I don't have time in my day for this kind of s***.  I also reported them to all the proper agencies as well. IF YOU GET A CALL FROM THEM DO NOT GIVE THEM MONEY IT IS A SCAM.....call them after hours, they don't even have a company voice mail...it just says not available please leave a message.  It should say you have reached the firm of Levy Brown Keller after our normal business hours.....that should tell you right there it Is a scam.  Attorneys cannot go after these types of companies for violating your rights so you just need to keep reporting the number to the proper authorities.  In addition, it appears these scammers use names of legitimate businesses and I can guarantee you that the names these people use are not legit. I just advised my family friends and co workers of this and to just disregard the calls that they are not a legitimate company.

Received a call regarding an online loan that my son supposedly took out and then claimed he did not do the loan and filed papers with his bank. This caller Mr. Jack Davis demanded a "settlement" of $492.00 otherwise they were going to pursue for attempting to defraud the bank. I stated I had power of attorney for my son and requested written documention be sent to me.  So far nothing.......and no other phone calls either.

Received a call looking for my sister that I have limited contact with. She would not have used me as any sort of contact but they somehow had my number anyway. Would not tell me anything except they were a legal processing firm for multiple claims.

Well perhaps you did stiff a creditor and willfully ran out on a PDL.  The problem is that no one else posting in this thread even indicated that they owed a bill.  Why on earth should someone pay a bill the don't owe?

This clown violated the law.  It is illegal to give information to a third party.  If you were really in trouble, don't you think they would know where you lived???  It is a SCAM and you can not be arrested even if you did owe money.  I suggest you mention this call to your employer.

Wrong - debt is civil, not criminal, so no one is going to be arrested for failure to pay back a loan.  Please do report your caller to the FTC, FBI and your state's Attorney General.  More info on this scam here:

I received a call from 'Paul Gordon' saying they've been trying to reach me, which they have not, and said that paperwork is going to be sent out in the next 24 hours. Stated that I needed a lawyer or something for myself. They gave me this phone number with an extension, but when I called back it rang like 7 times and went to automated voicemail. Uh... Fake? Or real?

Just be aware, even if you ask these people (or even demand in writing) that they stop calling they will continue to call. I am seeking advice from legal counsel on what to do about it.  And before anyone tells me "Pay your bills and they won't call" - WRONG.  I owe these people NO money and still they persist.
