AS per the CRTC- ALL mobile providers are required by LAW to let the third part content providers to bill through them- much like a Credit card- I you buy a piece of junk car from a used ccar salesman, You dont yell at Visa and say that visa is working with scammers do you?

Well, the Fanbox website is very dodgy, requiring a sign-in, so I scrapped that approach, with 'Not Michael''s warning in mind. Waiting to see if the confirmation message DOES in fact stop the scammer messages from coming in. Will report in a week or so if they're still plaguing me.
Merrikate 2012-05-06 18:20:30 Unknown
Michael, I'm no shill -- just an old lady learning about cell usage!
CORRECTION: To make matters worse, I misunderstood the techie who helped me. When I texted STOP to the number he gave me, an instant confirmation came back from FANBOX (not Sandbox, blush and 'duh'). This confirmation gave a website where my so-called fanbox account can be deleted. So I will also do that, and try the email addy again with the right term in it!
I DID get my 35 dollar extra charge (due to Fanbox's 6 messages) removed from my bill.
not Michael 2012-05-06 18:12:12 Unknown
Better idea. Contact your cell provider. Have them block all 3rd-party billing. Have them reject any call that will add a charge to your bill.
Many random texters, texting them "STOP" is proof that your number is real and you read texts from random strangers. E-mailing them give them that same information. They will sell that to other scammers and junk texters. You will be inundated with junk texts.
It is my opinion that this number is like that - harvesting numbers to sell. I also believe Merrikate is a shill. No, I can't prove it.

fyi: The email address above for Sandbox Widget is already bouncing emails back to sender. Rats.

HERE's some HELP!
My cell provider KOODO was a huge help in dealing with this scam. It seems once the Sandbox Widget company at 877-736-7629 gets a cell number, it charges for each call it send to us whether we answer or not. If you see a message saying to text them to STOP -- do so at once, and be sure to do it again till you get a confirmation message that they have stopped. You can also text them directly from your cell -- send STOP to # 78288, and also email them to STOP - at support@corp.sandbox.com
(If those moves don't get you a STOP-confirmation, you can call by them back by LAND-LINE & wait on hold 'forever' to speak to a Sandbox rep: BEWARE, as this is not a toll-free # and calling from cell will cost you all over again.)
I think I got that all right -- hope so. Worth a try. If you call your cell provider, they may also be able to remove charges for these calls from your bill.

I filed a report with the IC3--Internet crime commission ( http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx ). The form is easy to fill out and only takes a few minutes. Maybe nothing will come of it, but it felt good to at least try. Fanbox charged my cell phone $19.98 from Earth Alerts. I called Earth Alerts--they know nothing about Fanbox--Matt at Earth Alerts was great, tried to help me find out who did this.

I got $60.00 worth of text messaging charges on my Rogers cell phone plan from this 877-736-7629 number. I rarely to never use my cell phone so I was rather surprised when I needed to top up my pay as you go account.
This # is a scam and the cell phone companies participate by paying them the money even when they know the number is a scam because they coded it on my account record as "SCM"
I'm most annoyed and upset at the apathy of Rogers to help in any way.

How did that go by typing in to discontinue the service? Because I just got a text from them this morning. And I did the same thing.
Charles R 2011-06-06 21:04:47 Unknown
This is the contact number for Fanbox.com, a site which seems to scam people by texting them from 78288 fraudulently, causing charges to their account. My wife has been hit twice from them now. She's on Fido and Fido would only reverse the charges once. They also refuse to block the text number that keeps charger her.
Tina 2011-06-06 21:04:47 Unknown
This is a total scam. They have been charging my cell phone account $5 a month since October. I have no clue how this happened and what this fanbox is all about. I have called both the numbers indicated on the bill and the one mentioned here and typed in my cell # to "discontinue" their "service." Will see what happens. Is there anyone or anywhere that I can report this to?

I just got scammed into this as well. The only way to prevent them from further charging you is:
1. call their number 877-766-0101 immediately and remove your account. They will say they will not charge you further charges, which means what they already charged you, you won't get it back.
2. They will email you a "refund" form. Forget about it. It's not legit. There is even a typo on it. Instead of "penalty", they have it spelled "pentaly" which to me suggests the refund form is just a piece of paper which reveals your personal home address to the scammer.
3. Call your cell phone carrier immediately and explain. They can't refund you the money but will stop that third party from contacting your account.
They are indeed a scam and need to be dealt lawfully.

1-877-736-7629 belongs to a SCAMMER by the name "Sandbox" on the West Coast.
What is it? A criminal corporation?
Or a criminal corporation?
Or a criminal company?
Or a criminal corporation?
Or a criminal company?
Or a criminal corporation?
Or a company of criminals?
If you call them, they do not answer. They hang up on you, if you just passively hold the line.
And if you press 1, then 0, then they announce they're open M-F 9-5, and closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
How convenient.
They SSTEAL your money, i.e. charge your account at 10 p.m. on Friday, at the time they're closed.
And then when you call back on Friday, they're closed.
When you call back on Saturday, they're also closed.
When you call back on Sunday they're also closed.

As of September 3, 2010 the person behind 877-736-7629...
a) Operates in Canada because my cell phone number is from the province of Ontario.
b) Affiliated or associated with Fido, because my wireless provider is Fido. And to scam Canadians, the scammer needs the full cooperation of Fido.
c) He/she is a SCAMMER and a TH!EF because he/she took $3.00 CASH from my cell phone account. ILLEGALLY, and without my consent.
d) FYI, I did NOT buy / order anything.
e) FYI, at about the same time he/she sent me a free text message claiming I subscribed to "dressed pets" But hold for a second! What is dressed pets? A pet school? I don't even have a pet! And why would I dress up a pet, any pet, in this hot-hot summer weather?

Michael C. Pousti is an American businessman. Pousti currently is chairman and chief executive officer of SMS.ac, a mobile social data-communication company with more than 40 million members.[1] SMS.ac claims to be adding as many as 750,000 customers each month. Clients must agree to watch one daily advertisement sent to their phone and pay for message units. Cellular customers get the monthly bill, which averages about US$ per month, on their cell phone statements, and their wireless carriers get a portion of SMS.ac's revenue.[2]
Prior to SMS.ac, Pousti co-founded CollegeClub.com in 1995 and served as chairman and chief executive officer[3] until the company's bankruptcy in 2000.[4] CollegeClub.com continues as a subsidiary of other companies.[5]
Pousti also runs fanbox.com which uses phishing to send spam messages. The messages include the address in San Diego where the business is located, as well as a link that claims to allow you to stop receiving or sending messages.[6]

Fanbox creates victims of crime.
1) I've NEVER EVER ordered anything from Fanbox
2) Fanbox keeps taking MY MONEY without permission. What's the definition of THEFT and CRIME?
3) Now Fanbox wants me to SUFFER through a "refund process".
4) The link Fanbox/Debbie provides is NOT EVEN WORKING!!
www.fanbox.com/CustomerService/RefundRequest.aspx ??
On that page, whenever I enter my number 1XXXXXXXXXX (or any variation of it) and my email address (or any variation of it), all I get is an error message: "Phone number and email address do not match. Please check and try again."
5) NOW Fanbox/Debbie says, fill out a "Refund Certificate".
It demands your full name, address, phone, signature -- and bank account number, too, because she says a check will be issued -- and when a check is received and deposited, a bank account number will be written on the back of it that Fanbox will receive! Then all your personal info, including your full name, address, signature, and bank account number will be available to Fanbox and other identity thieves!
6) THEN, to make it worse -- according to Fanbox/Debbie -- I will have to do this by SNAIL MAIL which is the SLOWEST, most expensive, and most time consuming process Fanbox/Debbie was able to create for their victims!
7) SUMMARY: The victim of Fanbox/Debbie has no choice.
EITHER he/she accepts monthly THEFT by Fanbox/Debbie.
OR, alternatvely, the victim takes the risk of identity theft, because ALL of his/her personal info will likely end up in the hands of identitity thieves in India or in the seedy part of East San Diego.
8) When you tell this to Fanbox/Debbie, she just hangs up on you.
