Just got a call from them, this is a common scam, they buy old debts which are no longer registered on the credit reports because they have been written off or settled with no release notification.  Then they threaten people to pay, best action is to check your credit report, if you are not showing as owing be it that the agency has written it off or you paid it through a 3rd party collector and they failed to give you a release letter or in some cases failed to report the resolve of the file to the credit reporting agencies) this is the s*** these scam artist are doing, check your credit report, if that shows nothing then you are free and clear, matter of fact just tell them you are going to confirm with the credit reporting agency first before speaking about any "alleged" debt (this is important always use alleged debt), you will probably never hear from them again because they are basically a scam they buy these alleged uncleared debts for pennies and try to get you to pay, again, check your credit report, then you will know if you have any debt outstanding or not, too easy.

I agree with you, that once you tell a "bill collector" that they have to Cease & Desist, BUT since they're obviously breaking the law that won't make a bit of difference to them.

Since they seem to be calling from India I guess they feel they don't have to obey US laws...and I would imagine  it would be difficult, and probably IMPOSSIBLE, to prosecute them.

My best suggestion is that you Google all unknown calls and save them to your phone as "DO NOT ANSWER". I've dont it and it works out beautifully.

I just changed my phone number yesterday because I was getting so many scam phone calls, probably close to 150 in a month and a half. I moved to a different state over three years ago, but up until yesterday I kept my old area code. Literally, only 5 people have my new number, and yet today I get a call from these human slugs. Makes me wand to beat the crap out of someone.

I am not sure who these individuals are, but they are calling me too. I had an issue last year where I had a debt collector contact me and my work and my office front desk clerk. They told her that they would be bringing in a sheriff to my work if I did not pay a debt. Of course, I freaked out. I contacted these people and they use this scare tactic to get you to pay. I contacted the original creditor and the amount jumped $300 from the original debt to the debt the collection agency said I owed. Well after much research I found that the 'sheriff' was an individual working at this company (I called my local sheriff's office and district court office to see if I was to be served, there was nothing to be served to me and if it was to be served, it would be served via certified letter). They are not allowed to threaten you this way. I sent a letter letting them know that all correspondence would be through mail and they are not to contact me directly via my cell or my company or any other means other than through mail. I haven't heard a word since, unless of course this number is the one that is pursuing it now. Good luck to them. I've paid way more than I have should have for past pay day loans, they got their money back ten fold.

this number called my new cell phone number which I have on the "do not call" list. it must be some sort of random scam outfit and I'm wondering how else would they get this number that is such a fresh number? I also got a call from another collection agency who had a certain name they were looking for, which wasn't me. I think it must be computer generated random numbers they call. they are looking for anyone who will bite.

just to make a point, I am retired, have no credit cards, never been to a hospital, whereby I would owe something, never taken out a payday loan either, as don't believe in such as that, I don't owe anybody anything, and if I did, I'd like them to try and get blood out of a turnip! and still these weird scammers call an unlisted number, so it must be quite random fishing. I did not call them back. it was just my cell phone recorded the number.

Keep getting a call from this number who states I owe for a hospital bill. I haven't been to the Dr in over a year and as far as I know all my bills have been paid when I call and confirm with my insurance company. They wont stop calling.

1.10.2013 Several voice mails left on my son's voicemail who happens to be a minor.  All voicemails have only someone typing in the background.  Decided to call the number back and inform them they have the wrong number and talked to "Mike."  He said he'd document my son's number as "incorrect number" and he began asking me if I know someone named XXXX.  Told him repeatedly I've never heard of that person and my son is a minor.  He hung up on me while I was talking.  If this company calls my son's number again, is there anything I can do about it?

Yes, there is.  Start here:

http://www.ftc.gov/os/statutes/fdcpajump.shtm and become informed.

Then you can send them a letter, certified mail, return receipt requested.

Tell them that you deny owing any money, that any and all amounts you may have owed on this account were satisfied long ago, and that if they place any adverse information in your credit files you will pursue all appropriate remedies.  Also tell them that you do not work with third parties, that if there is anything to be handled you will deal directly with the original creditor, and that they (the CA) are not to contact you again.

One more thing, NEVER, EVER send a CA anything with your bank account number on it.  Many of these guys are crooks, and will simply draft money directly out of your account.  If you must send someone a cancelled check (and I am hard put to think of a good reason to do that) at least make a photocopy and then use a Sharpie to obliterate the bank name, account, and routing numbers.

While you are at it, look for a doctor that doesn't screw over his patients by outsourcing accounts to crooked bill collectors.  The doctor's office needs to call these dogs off proactively when there is a screwup, but in this case, just go ahead and take care of it yourself.

I've spoken to them, I did indeed owe a debt at one time, and as it turns out, I paid it to the doctor directly but somehow, it ended up in the hands of national asset management.  I've faxed them a copy of the cancelled check along with the invoice from the doctor twice and they still call.

Is there something I can do about it..  I mean, even the doctor agrees the debt is paid..

Been getting calls from this number for about a week. Once a day between noon and 2pm. I've never answered (because I don't answer from numbers I don't recognize) and they've never left a message. I'm also reporting this number to the Do Not Call Registry.

I did not start receiving calls from this number until I got a Cricket phone! I never changed my number when I changed providers. Is this the case for anyone else? I thought maybe they were being stereotypical and assuming I was low-income or no-income and would fall for a debt-assitance scheme lol I have never answered the calls cause I looked up number the first day they called me. The first call was over 6 months ago! They began calling in morning daily. Then after about a month starting calling at about 5ish daily. Then starting calling later in the evening daily around 9pm. and then calls began to thin out. They call in afternoon-just got one at 3:30-and like twice a week now. Does this possibly mean they could quit altogether eventually??

These people have called here for a very long time about a bill of my son's. I am able to block the number on my Panasonic telephone. if you cannot block them with your handset try going on-line to your account with your service provider and blocking there. If that fails, then purchase a coach's whistle and each time they ring, you answer with your whistle at full volume and then hang up.  If you do owe a debt and wish to clear it up, DO NOT pay these people. Pay the original creditor and cut a deal with them for either a discounted amount, or pay-out terms. Make sure the original creditor adjusts your credit report after all is settled. If you are absoutely compelled to pay the idiots on the phone, offer only 20-30 cents on the dollar.
A class action suit would be great, but consumer laws are supposed to deal with this. A class action takes at least a decade and millions of dollars, a great portion going to lawyers if there is a settlement or judgment. A cheap whistle brings more satisfaction!
Just a side note to the person who wanted an American speaking rep:  we speak English in the USA. You can call it American English, but it is still English. Always be calm and above the fray with collectors. They are used to upsetting people. It is one of their tactics.
If you are awash in debt, see your local non-profit consumer credit counseling. The will work with you, contact the creditors or collectors and set up a realistic repayment program. You will not have to speak with the idiot collectors again.  You are in control!

Got a call at my work from (877) 806-3160...never leaves a message though.  They can keep calling because I know where my "divert to voicemail" button is on my phone! Not getting any acknowledgement from me unless they send me something in written form.  Period.

I never pick up the phone for toll free numbers, and my phone message clearly states this. I have no idea what a "payday loan" is, nor have I ever had one. If I owe any money for anything, this is DEFINITELY not the way to get it, as I never respond to them. Absolute scum.

I am a DEBT COLLECTOR, and these numbers have been calling me constantly about payday loans and quest bills! I asked the time and time again to send me valadation notice which by FDCPA law is requiered. They are breaking the law by contacting me more than once a day, and even more sso because i already asked for valadation of debt, so they are suppose to send it and wait 30 days for me to dispute it if needed before they call me and ask for money. I believe they are using the name National Asset, and the real company needs to be informed of these forieners> When i test them and let them know i know my rights and th FDCPA, they always hang up. something needs to be done about them really.

If you have a digital phone account, you may be able to block creepy debt collector calls or any other ?unavailable? name or number calls through your provider's telephone tools. I have Cox and use this feature successfully for the vast majority of these type of calls.  If you don ?t have this availability and can afford it during these times, I highly recommend it.  Our home is much more tranquil and enjoyable since we obtained digital service.  Also, I highly recommend you reads the U.S. 1982 Debt Collection Practices Act (available many places online) to see what your rights are when dealing with collectors.
