They started calling me 2 days ago and every day after than.  Sometimes 2 times in one day.  They left a message that it was from the Office of Sidney Roman, Atty and to call them back at 877-627-0413, ext 4035.  When I called back 10 mins after then left a message on my phone it went to a voicemail.  I do not know who these people are, but they said that I was a person of interest for an investigation with their firm and that I needed to call them before the end of the day the settle the matter.

I got a similar message. They claim to be a lawyer's office and they are just collection agents. I have dealt with other collection agencies before. This place is the worst example of the tactics I have seen.

If they are threatening you with arrest to force you to pay a debt, that violates a Federal law called the Fair Debt and Collections Act. Also under the FDCA, if you inform them that you do not want them to call you again, by law they can only call you once in 12 month period.  However, you really have to make that request in writing because if you tell them over the phone, they can deny you made that request.

The reason why they don't give you their Fax Number or Address or hang up when you make that request, is because they don't want you send them a letter requesting that they do not call you again, or so you can't have your lawyer file a claim that they are violating the act or file a claim with your State Attorney General.  Which is ironic when you think about it, they make sure to mention they want you to have your lawyer call them and that's really the last thing they want you to do. It's reverse psychology - that want you to think you need a lawyer to resolve the call and that's how they trigger the fear they want you to have when dealing with them.

Also, if they really were a lawyer’s office, they can't sue you. Only a lawyer that is licensed in your state can file a lawsuit to sue you for a debt.  I think these people are located in Alabama, so it would have to be forwarded to a local attorney before it ever gets to the legal stage.

So they have been calling me non stop for the past week. I called they wouldnt even let me know what debt they were asking about or anything. Just saying that they will come to my job and have me arrested. They would not give me any information on theie company at all. I called the Attorney Generals office and see how I can file a complaint. I googled these people and they were not coming up at all.

They have been calling for several days.  Said they were investigating something... I asked for a number to call them back.  Was given a number and then I hung up.  However, they called back and gave me the name of my director and said they would contact him if I did not call back immediately.  I did call back several times and got a busy signal.  Tried calling back again and was told that the number (1-877-627-0413)was disconnected.  Strange, very strange.

Debt Collector
I keep getting calls from the Bass Incorporated Company based in Jacksonville, Fla.  My cousin is a Lawyer so I told him about how they called my work and told the secretary at my work about how I needed to have my attorney call them.  I did not have an attorney, nor was it her business what goes on in my personal life.  When I told my cousin what this company had done and how I had no idea who they were and why they were calling me.  He called them and stated that he was representing me as my lawyer and he was trying to get information from them.  They hung up on him and called my cell phone immediately afterwards and stated that they did not like me playing a joke on them and I really needed an attorney to call them not just my friend.  They then told me it was too late that the hearing was already going on and because I was not in Florida (I live in Michigan) I should be ready to be arrested the next day for whatever I had done.  UNLESS I sent them money via western union.  I laughed because they would not even tell me what this was all about.  It is a BIG scam!  This has been going on and on for months now and I am still working not arrested....

Are any of these people now using the number 877-611-1815?

I got a message telling me to call that number about a debt and providing an account code.  I've paid off my student loans, car loans, personal loans, credit cards, so I wasn't expecting to get a message like this.

The message was creepy from the start.  It asked if this is  - and then said my full name with middle initial.  It then said that by continuing to listen to the message, I was acknowledging that I was the person by that name.  Big red flag there!  Making a "legalistic" claim on a recorded message!  What if I was another household member or a visitor answering the phone?  It then said there would be a 3 second pause.  Then it said, "This is an attempt to collect a debt."  No identification of the caller, what the debt was for, nothing.  Needless to say I was infuriated, and then frightened - what if my identity was stolen?  What if they keep calling?  How can I shake them?

Has anyone gotten a call like this?

I got a message from them today.  I suppose it is regarding one of those horrible cash advances I took out almost 2 years ago.  Well anyhow, I am now working for a mortgage company in the collections department, and had to take an extensive course on Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.  Needless to say what they are doing is illegal.  Do not pay them.  If you want them to stop calling politely let them know they have violated many terms under that act and you may be obtaining a lawyer to sue.  Yes! you can sue them for any losses you have had due to their shady collection practices and also claim $1000 dollars as well (something along those lines).  The thing I absolutely hate about collectors such as these is they give my job a horrible name.  They make me hang my head in shame when I tell people what I do for a living.  My company along with many others collect fairly.  If you can get any info (address, company name, etc.) please report them to either your state Attorney General or the Federal Trade Commission.

It's a scam, and all their threats are false and illegal.  That ridiculous "You are a person of interest" line gives away the identity of these scammers -- it's the notorious Bass Associates/States Predisposition/Spellman & Roman scam, which is based in Jacksonville, Florida.  This is a not a law firm nor is it a legitimate debt collection company -- far from it.  (There are also other reports about this number here: http://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/8778360073 )

Spellman & Roman (or whatever other aliases they're using this week) is the latest incarnation of the infamous Bass Prelitigation/Ellis Crosby/States Predisposition/US National Bank/United Legal Processing scam in Jacksonville, FL. (More background info on this particular scam can be found here: http://budhibbs.com/debtcollectorpages/ellis_crosby_and_associates.htm )

The main thing to remember is that anytime someone calls you demanding money to prevent your arrest, it is ALWAYS a scam. No debt collector or attorney (let alone criminals posing as debt collectors and attorneys) have the authority to have anyone arrested for anything. (And it's illegal to them to threaten such a thing; it's also illegal for them to make any false threat, such as suing you when they no intention or authority to sue you.) And since these dirtbags routinely impersonate law enforcement (which is also illegal), it's also important to remember that American law enforcement officers aren't in the business of debt collection.  (Debt is a civil, not a criminal, matter.)  And rest assured that any threat that there will be a "disturbance" at your home is false and highly illegal. (This "disturbance" threat was often made by these same scammers when they were masquerading under the name States Predisposition Services.)

The bottom line is, these are criminals trying to steal your money with extortive threats.

If you have been targeted by these crooks, be sure to report them to all the following agencies:

1) File a complaint with your local police or sheriff. Most police departments will take a report over the phone.  Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.  (This is especially important if these scammers threatened you with arrest or "a disturbance" at your home.)

2) File a complaint with the Florida Attorney General at http://myfloridalegal.com/contact.nsf/contact?Open&Section=Attorney_General  Be sure to tell them that Spellman & Roman is Bass Associates/States Predispostion scam. (By the way, Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum is very aggressive in pursuing such debt collection scammers.  In fact, McCollum's office is very familiar with this particular scam and two of the crooks behind it - Frank & Evelyn Jackson. McCollum is currently suing the Jacksons for illegal debt collection activities.)

3) Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov  Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone.

4) The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.

5) File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.naag.org

6) File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en

7) If these Jacksonville, Florida scammers falsely represent themselves as being based in Moncks Corner, SC, you should also file a complaint with the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs at http://www.scconsumer.gov/complaint_services.htm  In your complaint to the SCDCA, be sure to suggest that their investigators contact the Florida Attorney General Economic Crimes Division for details on these three Jacksonville, FL companies: Ellis Crosby & Associates, Bass Preligitation, Inc. and States Predisposition. (Note that States Predisposition Services, Inc. is incorporated in Folkston, Georgia but is really operating out of the Bass Prelitigation "office" in Jacksonville.) It may also help South Carolina authorities to also reference in your complaint these links, which help chronicle the progress of these scammers from Jacksonville, FL up Interstate 95 to Folkston, GA and St. Mary's, GA and now to Moncks Corner, SC:

http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/120107/met_221875639.shtml

If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (Report them to all the agencies above each time they call you. Be sure to save any voice mail messages and, if legal in your state to do so, record all their calls.)

This women called me and said that there was a bad check from this payday loan company over a year ago. She asked if i had an lawyer to represent me when they arrested me for this 300 dollars. she gave me this fake court file number and said that someone will be by there in 15 minutes to arrest me. So I asked questions like: What's your company name? That file number is what? What's your name? Could you fax that doucument to me. The more questions I asked the more she was getting very upset and finally she just hung up the phone. Who every this company is just plays on people fears if you don't know any better some people might fall for it.

Honestly, the things bill collectors will say. Don't they know that if I were really "wanted for questioning" for something big, I would have to be hauled in in person or served? I suppose they can intimidate a lot of people with those tactics... what a shame.
