I got a call at my apartment phone (which no one ever uses). Miss Jenkins calling for one of my old apartment-mate's sister, who has never lived here. No accent. She gave me a reference number but didn't say what company she was calling from. Has called our apt at least three times already.

The number came up on my work's caller ID. The woman said her name was "Miss Jenkins" or something like that and she was calling for my boss. The company was called NCO and wouldn't disclose the reason she was calling, only that she said it was a "personal business matter". Sounds pretty fishy to me...

Same situation here.  Due to the person's thick accent could barely make out the message but caught the number.  The request for the SSN (per previous post) is a sure sign it's a scam and I'm not calling back.

Someone calling from this number left two messages on my WORK phone number.  Because of the strong accent, I could not understand this person's name on either one of the messages, although I could make out the number just fine.  I returned the call but only got this same person's voice mail.  I requested that they not leave any more messages on my work number.  (Their voice mail requested that I leave my name, Social Security number - ! - and telephone number.  I advised that no way was I going to give my SSN over the phone to someone whose name I could not even understand and also because they did not even give the name of their company in their message.)  The latest in a long list of either scammers or unscrupulous debt collectors.  Now to wait and see if they call back again or not.
