Been receiving calls from 877-852-7373. The automated voice says I must give them my credit card info to receive the call. I ignore it and hang up, but they keep calling back all hours of the day and night. My number is on the Do Not Call list, but that doesn't seem to matter to these scammers.

877-852-7373 - a few seconds ago
On my cell phone and with a blue tooth, a call came in from this number.  I missed the beginning of the call and it began with the end of someone seemingly stating there name, muffled, echoey, and then it went into asking for payment for a $4 charge to accept the collect call.  I didn't respond quickly, and the message began over again.  It said it was a call from the Niagara Falls Police Department and said it was a collect call from (insert the muffled, echoey voice) and then it said it had to be paid for with a credit card.  I was at work and very distracted, and, since it was only $4, I did give them a credit card number including expiration date and three digit security code from the back of the card.  As soon as I finished putting in the last digit of the security code (which I entered WRONG, LOL!), the call ended.  After checking on those I care about and finding everyone accounted for, which incidentally included attempting to get information from the NFPD from a VERY R-U-D-E desk sargeant who answers the phone without identifying himself and offers NO assistance, I called my credit card company whose staff was extremely professional at responding to this case of, what they called, an attempted identity theft.
Short version:  A call from this number is a scam. (and you can't get through to anyone if YOU call the number).
The desk sargeant at the NFPD who had phone duty at 3:08 p.m. on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 is a totally useless piece of flesh.  And if I haven't already stated it, his mommy never taught him how to be helpful or considerate toward others.
If you get caught of guard like I did, and you give them your credit card information, they'll cut the call off immediately, leaving you a bit stunned.
When you finally realize you've been scammed, CANCEL YOU CREDIT CARD IMMEDIATELY, and don't look back.  Just remember this experience and NEVER give your CC to ANYONE who calls you. Tell them you will call them back (at the number you KNOW is theirs) and take care of whatever the issue is.
Okay.  I've done my civic duty.  Beware and be smart!!  :-)

Got a call from that number on my deceased 10th year old daughter's cell today.

No idea who would've called it as it was just an emergency line for her school to contact us on.

Oh well, obviously no one I know, and if they are I won't be accepting collect calls from them in jail!

Actually-- it's not a scam. I recieved the same call today. It was automated and I listened to full message. The OPTIONS are will you accept a collect call from (insert name here) calling from the (Cheektowaga Police DEpt in this case). Then a long beauraucratic message about attorneys, recordings and privacy. Followed by you can pay via credit card (which I'd NEVER do) or accept the collect call. Because I knew the person was picked up last night I accepted the collect call.  It was rhe individual.. spoke tp the person and then hung up.. so NOT a scam-- but I'd still Not enter a credit card # at all.

Listen to a full message before assuming and don't give out any extra information in case it IS a scam

I have received phone calls from this number, from Niagara Falls jail a collect call both on my home phone and cell. I could not understand the callers name. I have been a victim of ID theft before so I called the Niagara County Sheriifs office, who reffered me to the Niagara Falls division. I was told I would be taken off the inmates list. I called again as the calls continued. I was then told that they could not track 800 numbers. Sooner or later this scam will catch someone off guard. It's hard to believe with the technology we have today this number can't be tracked by authorities and stopped.

Update:  I wrote the post of 1-13-10
Approximately a week after my experience with this number, out of sheer coincidence, I happened to find out that another person I know got the same call.  He was trying to figure out who was trying to reach him and was involoved in this dialogue with another of his friends on a chat space when I noticed the conversation.  I immediately jumped in and told him about my experience and that he should not respond. I gave him the number (877-852-7373), and sure enough, it was the same number his call came from.  His also came in on his cell phone.

I am revisiting this site because today I heard news of a similar event occurring to yet ANOTHER friend who tells me of a call where even her name was used in the conversation.

This is getting ridiculous, and the freaking police are acting almost as poorly as the scammers themselves. Hmmmmm . . . maybe someone at the NFPD is involved in this scam . . .  who knows?  Stranger things have happened . . . .

Anyway, it seems as though the beat goes on with this thing, and we're on our own to protect ourselves.

Got a call from the police department asking if I would accept a collect call from someone I know.  The call sounded fully automated.  In order for the call to be accepted, I would have to give credit card information.  The phone call got interrupted and disconnected.  I checked caller ID # 1-877-852-7373 and tried to call the number back.  The number would not go through.  Called the Police Dept and must have gotten the same jerk you did who gave me mis-information and another number to call for the Niagara County Jail.  Called there and they said there was no one there arrested with the name given during the attempt at the collect call.  I then called NFPD jail back to try and get further information and the jerk hang up on me.  Also never identified himself when you initially called.  I then called the information desk back to get the name of the Police Chief and the name of the caller on duty.  Instead I was given the a Lt. Kenney who apparently was the one in charge of the station last night.  This is not the end of this - they are hired to serve and protect - we pay their salaries.  I am going to call the NF Police Chief on Monday to report the person on duty.  I also intend to contact the State Attorney General's office since no one from the phone company can give me any information on this number.  This happened around 11:23 PM February 6, 2010.  I did not give out any credit card information.  I have Vonage so I can print-out all the numbers I contacted at the police department along with the times the calls were placed.  Niagara Falls NY
