Just called DTE and it is not illegal.  If you feel unsure, call 1-800-477-4747 and they will confirm it for you.  Hope this helps! :)

I too was skeptical, however this is a legitimate number.  My gas meter was just replaced as a result of this, it sure beats having your house blow up.  Anyway, call DTE directly after confirming the service, they will show it is booked and legitimate.

NOT A SCAM. I answered the phone and a nice lady said that DTE will be in my area on Tuesday August 25 and wanted to make sure that someone would be home so that they could change the MAIN gas meter, the one in the basement. DTE Energy needs to make sure that their meters are updated. Mine was changed in 2006. It was 50 years old. It only took the guy less than half an hour. I informed the lady that mine has already been changed. She checked and verified that it had and apologized for the inconvenience.

I TOO KEEP GETTING CALLS FORM 877 853 9434 ...NEVER LEAVES MESSAGE AND THEN WHEN I DID ANSWER A VERY RUDE LADY SAID HAS TO MAKE APPT ..I HUNG UP BECAUSE OF HOW RUDE THIS PERSON SOUNDED....I GET AT LEAST 2 CALLS A DAY!!

I got a call from this number about 5 times and when I tried to answer it nobody was ever there.  When I called the number back I got a voicemail service that said it was DTE Energy, so I called DTE's main line and asked them.  They said it is DTE trying to call to set up appointments to do safety checks on the gas lines.  The customer service rep told me that they do this every ten years on every house, but that's all she could tell me.

We got calls today from the same number and finally my hubby answered and set up a day to have "DTE" come over. Then we searched the number in Google and just weren't sure about it being legit or not so he called the number back and said I think you are a scam and they said no Sir, this really is DTE. I have him calling a Customer Service number of DTE now to verify. Sounds very very fishy to me. Has anyone confirmed yet if this is really DTE???

someone from the number 877-853-9434 calls me once a day for the past 2 weeks and do not leave a message. i called them back a couple days ago and they said they are from dte to check my gas meter safety and they need to make an appt with me. i told them i am not available during the week. thought was very sketchy. i would not trust them.

it is not legit, they come out and take the gas meter you have and you never see them again. They tell you they're just changing out your meter because its been ten years.

They use an automatic phone dialing system that calls out for the rep (it’s a computer) and it does NOT leave a message (which is annoying). You can call the number on your DTE Energy bill and confirm it. They are really nice. If you think it’s a scam just ask for a supervisor or ask them to transfer you over to the DTE Customer Service Dept. If it were a scam and not legit, they would not be able to transfer you to a customer service rep! You have to be in the company to have phone transfer connections. Hope that helps!

Its not a scam.  They just called me AND left a voice mail.  I have DTE coverage on my furnace and hot water tank.  I called for service on my furnace last night...this number just called to confirm my appointment for them to come out and fix my furnace...

Well, this number calls me every day. The guy has an Indian accent. He says he calls from Bell Canada, from Ottawa, Canada. I have asked him for six times very politey to stop calling me, to no avail. He just called and I asked to be transferred to a supervisor. He said: one moment and hung up.

They usually call at 6 pm.

I am very frustrated and have no idea how to make them stop calling me. Any suggestions? Thank you!

It is legit.  I manage several apartments and I have received written notices from DTE regarding this as well as phone calls.  They have been doing this for the past few weeks on several of my apartments.  Every once in awhile the meters go bad and need to be changed out.

Annoying.....but legit.

I got a call today at my work asking for me stating that my gas was going to be turned off soon and that I needed to call. I have all electric and have never used gas for my home. I live in Kentucky and when I called to complain since they called my work, the woman said they are located in Detroit Michigan. Very embarrassing to me since they said they were gonna turn my gas off but also because it is false since I do not live in Detroit and my work is nowhere near Michigan either. I do not list my work number as a contact so not sure how this took place but threatened to contact my attorney if they called any number associated with me again! The woman said she couldn't even find me in here system but when I told her that someone called my work in Kentucky as specifically asked for me she stated it must have been a mistake. I am pissed!

I get calls at least once or twice a day,never leaves a message..i feel if its dte for real they would at least leave a message for someone to callback...very annoying i think.

Anybody who says this is DTE is involved with the scammers.  Nice try scammers.  Don't let them know when you will be home or not.

I also called DTE to ask about this number and appt. to change my meter.  They confirmed that it was valid.  I called the 877 number and got a DTE call center.  The service rep. was pleasant and informative.

They call about the same time everyday and I never answer and they never leave a message. Odd to have a 877 number not leave a message. BTW Why would anyone look up this number on this website and leave a message on board if they believed it was really DTE?

877-853-9434 is from DTE. I called the number on my billing statement to check it out & the appointment was confirmed.

I received a call from this number saying they were from DTE and telling me they needed to check my meter.  I told them the meter is outside and they told me they needed to come inside.  They wanted to know when I would be home.  I asked them to send me a letter to this effect.  The lady got nervous and hung up.  I called DTE and they told me that there was nothing wrong with my meter.  This seems to be some sort of scam.

This call was from DTE as a reminder of a service call for my home tomarrow. 1st time they called I said hello twice and no one was there so I hung up. They returned my call and someone was there this time for my reminder. I think this is a computer generated call and it takes the customer service rep. too long to get on the line before we all hang up.

Like others, I got the call, he claimed to be with DTE Energy and needed to schedule a time to read the meter im my basement.  I stupidly told him two days I was not going to be home and then got concerned about someone plotting a break-in.  
I called Ma-Bell - that was no help.
I *69'd the number but couldn't get through.
So, Finally I called DTE, went through the damn voice menu system, waited, waited and then got a human on the phone who confirmed that this was a legitimate call from DTE and not a thief trying to find a good time break in.
