The call I got was not from this #. Caller ID was blocked. This was the # they told me (on my answering machine) to call back.  This is a scam. They call people posing as a debt collection agency trying to collect for an unspecified client. A small percentage of people they call actually have an old unpaid debt and are fearful of legal action. They are convinced to make phone payments. Often they divulge, unwittingly, who their old debt was owed to and how much. (department store credit card, etc.)
They also call relatives and try to scare them into paying. Grandma finds out her grandson is in trouble and pays up. They probably make these connections to relatives through Facebook and other social media sites when people list their relatives.
They are looking for $, but also your bank account #, Debit card #, SS #, etc.
They refuse to send anything via US Mail.
If you tell them not to call again, they will.
They like to call during normal business hours so if its a home #, you aren't at home and if it's a cell # you are busy at work. Either way you are unlikely to answer because they block caller ID. They prefer to leave a recorded message that sounds very serious. It's also very vague. They want you to call the # that they give you.
So, someone with a run of the mill name like Alan Cross, Tim Bosch, James Kelly, Scott Michaels, Joshua Elliot, Mike Taylor and the guy that called me "Bill Palmer", calls and says an undisclosed client wants a debt cleared with you and directs you to call an unnamed agency and gives you a 24-48 hour deadline. Then ends it with "you have been officially notified!"
If you get any calls like this, don't give them any information. If you actually talk to them live on the phone, they may sound like they are legit. They may even know they last 4 digits of your SS#, have your cell # and your work #, home address, etc.
They may also couch this as a call from a TORT law agency to get you to think you are owed $. Hang up. If it doesn't come in the US Mail, it's not legit.
