Today I received a call from this same number asking for $400 on a prepaid debt card! To fix the " broken" electric meter. If not it would destory my appliances. And I would be without power for 3 days. So my son called them back in his cell and he went created a fake name n said he received a call. But funny thing was. They had all my information (name and phone#) and city location. But they wouldn't tell me the location of where I pay the bills. And they messed up and spilled the beans on saying my son last name( fake) wrong and using mine instead!!!! So watch out. They are still there. I also asked if the call was from the USA or from the outside. They never answered my question and hung up.

I got a call today from an "Emergency Contact" from Comed Electricity saying that we needed to get a $300 Green Dot card and hand over the serial number so that they wouldn't have to shut off our service for 72 hours. We were contacted in spanish for the reason that all my family speaks spanish, so i asked if i can talk to someone in english they hesitated so i let my mother continue talking. Later i called Comed myself and asked about my account and they said it was fine so they said that it was a scam and i should contact the Police Department ASAP. The ladies name who supposedly called was named Yesenia Lopez and she said to call back with the money at (888) 201-7958 ext 1516

This number was also used in the same type of Utility/Green Dot scam in Portland, Or. on 01-15-14 and as you can see, has been used in the same type of scam in the Midwest. Please report this activity to your utility and have them call me at 503-464-8602 to share this information.  The calls ,we believe, are being made from overseas.

I live in Minnesota, and received a call yesterday and today from person claiming to be Rosa Martinez 888-201-7958.  Very unprofessional and in spanish.  Chewing gum as she was talking, claiming to be from Xcel Energy and she stated that my bill was overdue and they would shut off my power yesterday.  That did not happen, and she called back today.  I called Xcel Energy and my account is fine.  Do not give out any information to this person.  Do not give her any money, It is Fraud.  Call and report her to your energy company that she misrepresents herself as.

My mother was contacted in spanish, they told her that our service would be cut off for over 72 hours if she did not pay for a technician to come out and fix the meter, because apparently it had a problem. So they had her transfer over $300 via Greendot Moneypak. Then tried saying that the payment was not processing and tried to get her to send another $300 via another Greendot Moneypak card. That is when I diectly called consumers energy myself and they informed me about the scam, but it was already to late for the $300. The callers supposed name was Michell Aquino, and the other lady was Rosa Martinez. I will not rest until I find the people behind this and return my mothers money that she had worked hard for.

From the Des Moines Register 8-31-2013:

A phone scam targeting utility customers around the country has reached Des Moines.

MidAmerican Energy Company has received reports from customers throughout the metro complaining of suspicious calls. People posing as electric company employees tell customers they are behind on their bills and must purchase a Green Dot prepaid debit card, load it with money, and hand over the serial number, or else face their electricity being shut off.

Caller ID shows the suspicious calls as  888-201-7958  .

The Green Dot scam is the latest that MidAmerican says has been targeting its customers. Earlier this month, dozens of local customers complained of callers demanding credit card or bank information to pay outstanding bills.

The company warned customers not to give credit card numbers, account information and personal information in response to ?suspicious or unsolicited calls.? Call police instead and contact MidAmerican Energy at  888-427-5632  to report the incident.
