I received a voicemail message recently that gave this phone number as the one to call back.  The transcription of the voicemail message reads: "Hi, ummm, my name is Michael Jones.  I'm calling from Tri-State Process Servers office.  I've been asked to setup a service assemblance to appear in court there at the (my street's name) address for a (my name).  I'm trying to verify the address and a good time to send the the (yes he really did say the two times...) uniformed officer over there.  Uhh, you can contact the legal department at 1-888-217-8007.  Uhh, you must refer to case file (case file #.  Again the number is 888-217-8007."

The guy sounded like he was a complete stoner, was very unprofessional, and at one point even sounded like he was trying not to laugh!  When I tried looking up the company there was very little to begin with and when I did find "their" website it is down for construction... really phishy...

I called the number back.  Of course since it is the weekend, no one answered.  But, the recording stated that it was the Legal Offices of the Resource Management Group and to leave a case #, etc. to get a call back.

I called them back during business hours and they are a law firm, the process server is contracted through them and is actually in your area.  The law firm is contracted by either a debt collector or the actual company that you owe.  They were very nice, professional, gave me all the information that I needed and actually some that I hadn't even known that I would need.  the entire thing was quite painless, they explained that the creditor was in the process of setting up a judgement lein to garnish wages because the statute of limitations was running out on the debt and that they had been sending me letters for some time know.  I explained that I had received no letters in regards to the bill at all, turns out they were still sending them to a previous address from 8 years ago, they had never updated my address when they were given a new one.  They arranged for an out of court settlement right then and there, e-mailed me the legal documents and let me research them, and then took a check by phone.  It was a valid debt and the company is legit.  Trust me, you don't want to wait until it goes to court... they gave me 66% discount all the way down to less than the original balance, no interest (obviously this depends on your creditor...) Plus, if you let it go through court then the courts also tack on the total of your creditors legal representative and court fees!!

I called them back today after my mom called to let me know that they had left her a message minutes after they left me one.  How emberassing, I can't believe they didn't allow any time for a call back, I mean seriously!  For all they know I could have simply been in the shower or something... Anyway, the company that called me was simply a relatively "local" process server company that was contracted by RMG which is the legal office that was contracted by my creditor.  They were very nice, professional, and helpful.  They explained that a creditor was trying to get a judgement lein to garnish my wages for an old debt because the statute of limitations was about to run out on them collecting it and that the creditor had been mailing me letters with settlement offers.  I explained I hadn't received a single letter.  Turns out they were still sending corespondence to an old address from 8 years ago because they never updated my address when I gave them new ones.  They put me on hold, got on the phone with the creditor to see if the settlement offer was still on the table, came back to me and let me know that it was, e-mailed me the letters and the proposal, let me research it, called them back and they took a check over the phone right then and there.  On top of that the creditor gave a 66% discount, the amount ended up being less then the actual debt was before interest(obviously that would depend upon your creditor...)  RMG gave me all the information that I needed and even some that I didn't know I would need.  They were very neutral and helped me out just like your own attorny would.  Plus, if you ignore them and let it go all the way through court, not only will you get hit for the full amount of the bill plus interest, you will also get hit with the cost of legal expenses and fees that the creditor had to spend just to get the judgement!  Yikes, that would be expensive...
