Scam
Ok, I got a phone call the last few days from this number (1-888-231-6262) and a voicemail asking me to call back and verify my info. Well my info (Such as SSN address ect I had already put down on my appl.(see below)
I am seeing the back and forth from those saying yes it is fraud and no it's legit; I just got off the phone with BoA; took me forever to go through their menus as I do not have an acct with them; I did recently apply for a student credit card but the number got me a bit suspicious; so I called them and spoke with a rep named Mike; and he said yes; the phone call was NOT from them. He further asked that I email abuse@bankofamerica.com to let them know about this.

This number is NOT Bank of America and Bank of America told me they have absolutely no relationship with the people who are representing they are an independent company hired to independently verify information on my credit card application. The contact from 888-231-6262 reached me through and unrelated person who received the initial telephone call when they attempted to reach me. The person who received the call knew me and passed on the message to return the call and they gave me a specific case reference number. I asked the person at 888-231-6262 why they didn't have my telephone number if they were verifying my credit card application. They responded that they use public records to find your contact number rather than the information on my application. If that sounds absurd then it can be nothing but absurd. They asked me for additional personal information under the guise that they needed to verify who I am and process my application. I asked for the contact name and information for their contact at Bank of America. I was given another number to call which remarkably was nothing more than another number to the same "independent verification company". If you receive a call from this number, contact Bank of America and report the attempt.

Got a call on my two numbers but did not answer because caller ID said "Toll Free Call" which are usually telemarketers or spammers and I don't answer them.  After checking here, I called them back.  I applied for a card online and they wanted to verify that it was me applying and not a case of identity theft.  I told them that their caller ID should be Bank of America to properly identify them.

Legit. It was Bank of A.
I recently applied for a credit card with Spirit Airlines and they were calling to confirm the details to rule out fraud.

I have been receiving these calls from 888-231-6262 for the past month.  I just got off the phone with BofA and was told that this is definitely a scam.  Capital One is also listed under this scam number.  Call me any name you want as it will roll off my back like water on a duck.

The phone number 888-231-6262 is a legitimate Bank of America/FIA Card Services phone number. The department calling is the Fraud Department. Most calls are due to a recent credit card application that was deemed suspicious and they are calling to verify the application with you. They will ask for the phone number on your application and will pull up the records. They will NOT ask you for your SSN. A few random verification questions will be pulled from your credit report (such as car loan lender name or monthly payment amount, previous address, or other information). At this point the credit card application will be finalized and dependent on the answers provided will be either approved or declined.

In my case, I had applied for a BoA credit card, and due to the number of recent inquiries they deemed the application suspicious and proceeded to ask me a number of verification questions. At the end of the call, my application was approved and the representative had the exact details of the card I applied for. At NO point will they ask you for your SSN (only perhaps if you don't know the phone number attached to the application.)

I received several calls from this number 'claiming' to be Bank of America Customer Protection Unit.
They left a voicemail this last time and I called back.
I explained that I could not give any personal information to an unknown telephone number.
They suggested that I call B of A and ask to be transferred to the 'Customer Protection Unit'.

I called B of A customer service 1-800-432-1000 and eventually got past the call-robot and
explained everything to a B of A customer service person and she looked up the number
and did transfer me to their Customer Protection (anti-fraud) department.

So it was a lot of nuisance but I did give the person my security question/answers and
that satisfied the question that they had about what address to send my new credit card to.

'Legitimate' but would not hurt to call back to BofA customer service if you have any doubt.

I had recently applied for a new Bank of America Card and recently moved. I used my new address on my application and hadn't updated my billing address on my account. I had originally received an email from Bank of America asking to call a number that did not recognize, nor was it on the Bank of America Website. So I have been panicking after receiving two very similar voicemails from the 302-458-1590 number. Especially after everyone saying it was a scam. I had already talked to some agents from Bank of America who had indicated that my application was approved. However, I was still receiving voicemails. So I decided to take the risk and called the number (The 1-888-231-6262 number given by the voicemail).

A younger woman answered the phone (rather quickly) They did not have my reference number on file, however I realized afterward I mistakenly added a digit to my reference # (oops). They initially asked for a social security #, however I refused and they asked for my first and last name. Without giving them any additional information, they were able to pull up my records and had indicated that there was a discrepancy in the application (my old address). I corrected this, and they approved the application.

Finally, to give myself complete ease of mind, I called the customer service # on my bank of america card. I did the whole male voice automated thing, and spoke to a Bank of America Agent. I explained the situation and he confirmed that the # was a legitimate Bank of America Card Services number.

By the way: I had been bounced around bank of america's different departments because I was concerned about an email I had received regarding pretty much the same issue. However, the email was Legit from Bank of America. While confirming that, and going through different credit card departments (New applications, fraud, customer service), several departments answered the phone with "card services". I have heard  the "card services" scam voicemail before, so I can see where people are concerned/paranoid.

TLDR: CONFIRMED BY BANK OF AMERICA CREDIT CARD CUSTOMER SERVICE AS LEGIT.

As several people have said. If you are concerned. Call and ask! Give yourself ease of mind.

This number is for Card Services who represent different banks and financial institutions to ceck on potential credit card fraud.  It is a legitimate number to call back.  In my case, I applied for a new credit card online and they called to confirm that I applied for it because they had on record that I recently cancelled one of my other credit cards because of an attempt to steal and charge on it.  They are double checking, and they have all my past financial info.  This is a legitimate number to call back, and part of fraud prevention.

Phishing is an attempt to steal personal data where a thief sends an email claiming to be from a legitimate business, a government agency, or a financial institution like your bank or credit card issuer. The website or email often asks you to confirm or update your account information, or may ask for your social security number, credit card information, personal identification number, password or user name, or other sensitive personal information. The thief then can use your personal information to commit identity theft or other fraudulent activities.

Coakley:
And Dave, when someone get a phishing email, such as the kind Tom has just described, what?s the best thing to do? Just delete it? Report it?

Director Dave Papargiris:
You know, they should delete it, and not respond to it.  And the thing that they should remember is that no financial institution will ever call you on the phone or send you an email asking for personal information.  So, if you do receive one, most likely it is a phishing scheme and they should just delete it and not respond to it.
They may want to call their local branch of the bank and just ask them if their aware that they?re receiving these emails so that the bank can notify their security department and start looking into those.

If it's BOA why then don't they announce themselves as BOA either when they call or when you return their call. I called back and it just said, please wait a customer service rep will be with you...But it never stated what bank they were calling from.

Sounds like a phishing scam to me. Thinking of reporting it to the Attorney General's office.

My name is Fred and I work with BofA in the fraud department. I can assure you that this Is not a scam. I will explain the ENTIRE process to you now.

When someone applies for a credit card the first thing BofA does is approve or decline the application from a credit standpoint.. Then, if you're approved, the application goes through our "fraud strategies." in this process a computer checks to make sure that all of your personal info is matching the credit report we have on file for you. If everything matches, like your curent address, ssn, dob, mmn, phone numbers, we send the card no questions asked. If for instance something isn't matching, like your address, and we can't verify it we give you a call to make sure that you had applied and do indeed want your credit card sent to that address.  I will warn you that we get a lot of applications where the addresses don't match your current address on your credit file that turn out to be identity theft. So if you receive a call from this number it is in your best interest to take the call. We will not ask for any personal information other then an address. The only time we will consider asking for your SSN is if the SSN we have on your application does not match the SSN on your credit report.. Otherwise we have no need to ask you for it.. But, once we verify all of your information we send you the card. If we verify that you did not apply we do educate you on what to do in this situation and also offer to have you speak with our victims assistance unit..

What makes this whole process seem so fishy is the fact that we refer to ourselves as "card serves." The reason why we do this is simple. BofA's fraud department is the top fraud dept in the world. We prevent more fraud then any other bank. So.. Smaller banks, like for instance Regions Financial, or first bank of puerto Rico, outsource their fraud prevention to bank of america. When we speak to customers from those banks we refer to those accounts as "transparent." and if we break transparency or refer to ourselves as BofA while talking to a regions cust we are charged heavy fines up to as much as much as $10,000 for breaking transparency. Therefore to make things easier we created our legal name "card serves." so if we recieve a call from a regions cust or a bofa cust we dont have to worry about breaking transparency. once you identify your ref num when you call in we will refer to ourselves from BofA. We just don't want to beak transparency.

Anyway, if you still feel nervous about a call from this number please feel free to call our customer service num.. They will transfer you to us. I hope this helps.

Got a call on July 3 from Customer Protection Unit of Card Services saying she received request for credit in my name, asking me to call between 8-8 eastern time at 888-231-6262 and refer to ref # 263421478. I called the number after hours and a recorded voice said I had called Card Services (no indication of which card this is) and that my call couldn't be taken, then it hung up.

888-231-6262 is FIA Card Services. They help banks with processing credit card apps. Bank of America confirmed this is legit.  Story below:

Got a voicemail from a blocked #, so was suspicious at first. Called the 888 # (identified as "card services"), gave the reference # and was transferred to another woman. I had applied for a Bank of America credit card last Friday, and her call was to verify address information on my credit history. She asked me to fax back information to verify my address. I thought this was really strange, so I called the main BoA credit card # on their website, and was eventually transferred to the security department. BoA security guy was able to look up my application and the reference # given to me in the voicemail and confirm that in fact BoA did need to verify my address. He even gave me the same fax # that the first woman did.

I called back the first 888 # left in my voicemail and asked the call answerer to identify herself. She said she was part of FIA Card Services and they help banks with processing credit card apps. Seems like they are just an outsourcer and this number is legit.

If you applied for a credit card recently, this is totally legit.  If you did NOT apply for a card, then somebody else did so in your name so you should consider a phone call from this number you should take it seriously - it might be your first warning that you are a victim of identity theft.  This is not a phising scam.

I applied for a Bank of America card and I have a consumer protection fraud alert on my credit report so that if credit is applied for in my name, the bank or their card processing agency (people from this phone number) have to call me and I have to convince them that I did, in fact, apply for the credit card and am not becoming another identity theft statistic.
