Really. If they told you they were trying to contact your neighbor to collect a bill, they violated your neighbors privacy. You have no legal right to know your neighbor's financial situation. So, unless your neighbor specifically told them they may call you ...
If I were your neighbor, I'd hire a good, dirty lawyer.

Good information. But I do not have nor have I ever had an account with GMAC. In addition, ALL of my cars are paid in full. So why did they call my number and leave a message saying they are calling to talk to me. Are they doing telemarketing from this number as well as collections? That would be stupid. Oh well. I have an app that allows me to create a "blocked calls list" so from now on, I'll not hear the phone ring. If they keep calling, someday, I'll call them back and threaten to file a complaint with the FCC if they don't stop. I will record the exact date and time of the call, I'll get the address for their office and send them the certified letter. Then, if they ever call me again, they'll be paying ME enough for me to buy a new car ... which I will not buy from GM since they started the two-bit finance company named GMAC.

My wife and I just talked through. The caller said he was calling from "National". Many here say it is GMAC. Problem is that I've never had a business relationship with either. So, why are they calling me???

You're absolutely correct - items included in bankruptcy means the creditors were already notified and thus they cannot collect - in fact, if you're harassed about a debt included in bankruptcy proceedings, YOU can sue them for violation of bankruptcy protection law!
You were also correct not to give out your SSN - it could be any Tom, Dick or Harry calling. If a caller won't MAIL proof that a debt is yours and that they have the legal right to collect said debt, they are owed nothing, per the FDCPA. And again, your loan was covered under bankruptcy, so they can't come after you.
Report the callers to the FTC and also your state's Attorney General. You may also wish to contact the attorney who handled your bankruptcy.

They didn't leave a message, I called back. Told them that I don't have a car loan, the only time I did have one through GMAC was way over 15 years ago, and that was included in a bankruptcy. She asked well did you notify them, if not they are trying to collect. UM yes they got notified from the court. And they can't collect. Then she asked did you co sign a loan...Um no, haven't worked in 4 years and my credit sucks. She said the only real way to check is to have my social security number...no I'm sorry you called me you should have the information already in front of you by matching my phone number...So if they call again they will get a complaint filed on the FTC website.

They called and didn't leave a message so I looked it up here. I called the number back and got an agent on the phone. Told him they were calling me but I was sure they had the wrong number because I've never financed a car- always paid cash. He was very polite, apologized, took my number and said he'd 'do a company-wide search to find where this is in our records and take the number out'. I'm surprised he was polite because usually these guys are very rude. Nice surprise.

Received a unusually suspicious call displaying "800 Service 888-276-6022"
on the caller id window. The female individual claimed to have an affiliation
with some sort of financial services company. Her excuse for calling was that
she was attempting to speak with an individual supposedly named Carlos Restrepo.
However the caller totally failed to explain why she chose to contact me,
about an individual who is absolutely unknown to me, assuming such a person
actually exists.

Called. Left no message. I had to go through all the possible last numbers for this call as caller ID gave the phone number as 188-827-6602. This number is the ONLY one of the ten possible numbers that has had any reports against it.

they just called my business # acting like a potential customer isnt that illegal ? I think they are in violation of the FDCPA and I actually just got 1000 from a suit filed against a different debt collector who gave information to me about somebody elses debt and actually threatened me !
GMAC watch out, I will record all your calls from now on.. and I WILL FILE SUIT !! LOLOL

Someone calling from 1-888-276-6022 has called my phone a few times the last few weeks asking for a name that I don't recognize and certainly doesn't live at my address!
ss 2011-06-06 21:05:20 Unknown
left a voicemail identifying themselves at GMAC and saying they had my contact info as a possible contact for a relative (who they listed by name). Not even sure which relative since I have two by the name they had.
Have NO idea how they'd get my cell phone associated with either of those people since I've not been in touch with either in years and they definitely don't have my cell phone number.

Calls from 888-276-6022 is from Ally Financial. Sometimes they leave a voice mail, other times they just call. If you fall behind even for a month, it seems like your names goes on a network for every call center affiliated with them to call you in the hopes that one of the agents would get through, lol.
I spent 11 months once trying to resolve a billing dispute with GMAC, I escalated over and over and never got anywhere until I contacted their CEO and sent copies of my correspondence to their Board of Directors. Certainly got their attention and problem was then resolved in like 5 minutes. But I still remember what they put me through so I will not make it easy for them, so I will just ignore them like they ignored me.

It is GMAC/Ally. I do have a late account and have answered this call. I suggest simply answer it and ask to be removed as it's a wrong number. Their CS reps are usually friendly

this is Allied Financial formerly GMAC....at least that is what the voice answering greeting states

Got a call and a message from Ally (not Allied) financial. I had been stressing about not recieving a bill for a car that I had purchased from a Chevy dealer. I came to find out that the finacial institution that held the loan was Ally. I had missed a payment. I would have been great to learn the name of the lender from the auto dealership... They are legitamate, although easily confused with a weight loss supplement or Allied Financial . Someone should talk with their PR department about that...
cmoss 2011-01-24 21:58:56 Unknown
I got a call from this number from someone claiming to be with Allied Finiancial looking for my son. They had the wrong name and after the person tried three other guesses, all wrong, they refused to tell me what they wanted. Sounds like they were fishing for information.
JC 2011-01-07 18:15:00 Unknown
I pretended I was who they were looking for and they spilled the beans. They are Allied National debt collection. The only way to get them to stop is to call them and prove you are who you are. 800-456-5770 is their number. Such jerks!

Yes this is the former GMAC - now known as Ally Bank; Frankly, I was behind on a few payments. My representative was polite, helpful and quit nice in working out something for me to get caught up on my payments with htem. I was treated with respect and a rude approach was not part of my telephone call to them or from them. They just sincerely wanted to help the situation from going toxic.

i received a call from GMAC and was given this number and asked if I knew the deceased individual they were looking for or his daughter. I do not have any affiliation with GMAC or these people.

THEY CALLED AGAIN AND HUNG-UP.
You would think that the collections dept would know MY PHONE NUMBER is not the PHONE PAYMENT line!
One-time thing? 2010-02-05 22:57:07 Unknown
We received a call this morning - polite older gentleman asking for someone with the same last name - but someone that we don't know. Not pushy or abusive - we weren't sure what it was about. Said he was hoping we were a relative... From reading these posts, we can guess that "Jenny" is probably slipping behind on her GMAC car payment... I *hope* this is a one-time thing.

A voice message was left on my private line of 20 years indicating that the call was from 1-888-276-6022; however, the caller stated that his name was Jason from GMAC and that he was trying to reach my neighbor "Natalia Sealy" and left a different phone number (877) 341-7555 x 1715.
