773-668-1601 was the caller ID.  Said they needed to speak with my daughter, but they had her name wrong (her first name was right, but they used my married name as her last name (i'm remarried)).  They said they were from Asset Acceptance, but she had no debt, no credit cards, no anything.  Said she should call back at 888-397-8183 x5372 Jeremy Winge.  Within 5 minutes he wasn't there, but another woman could help her.

I also received a call from 1-888-397-8183 from a person named Alicia Harry (sp?) she said she is from Providian Credit/Asset Acceptance and that any information will be used to collect a debt. This is not a valid debt and be very careful about giving your informations out. She called and asked to talk to Tracie, and I said "this is Tracie" and then she went on asking more questions. Also, just to let you know, the caller ID number was 248-220-8709 and that is a local number and they used that number but they were calling from that 1-888 number. Also to let you know 248 is a local area code number. This is strange.

They wouldnt give me any information whatsoever about the matter.

We get calls at our home number on a weekly (and sometimes daily) basis from this number. Whoever the caller is at the time refuses to give any information other than their last name & a call back number.

They refuse to answer if asked WHERE they are calling from, or what company they work for, etc., - simply stating it is a private matter and of the utmost urgency that the person they asked for return their call.

I understand that the privacy laws limit their ability to answer SOME questions - such as WHY they might be calling, - however, I DO NOT know of ANY LAWS THAT RESTRICT THEM FROM DIVULGING THE NAME OF THE COMPANY THEY WORK FOR.

If anyone here knows of any laws that restrict a collection agent/agency from telling anyone where they work, PLEASE post that information here.

Oh, - and if any of you are having trouble with CREDITORS HARASSING YOU (FRIENDS OR FAMILY) AT WORK AND/OR AT HOME, etc., check out the website below for some VERY HELPFUL INFORMATION!

Called looking for a person who used to have my number. Left a message on my answer machine stating if I'm not the person to hang up.  How can that be done if it's an answering machine.  How stupid are these people.  I called and told them that that person doesn't have the number anymore and to take me off.  We'll see if it really happens.

You cannot call a toll free number "private."  Since they are paying the phone bill for your call, it will show in called ID anyway!

Most debts reach a statue of limitation.  Find out what your state's laws are first.  Most states is 4 years after the debt.  You don't have to pay it in most cases...if you tell a collector you will pay it than the debt starts fresh again.  So, don't ever agree to pay a past debt.  Tell the collector on the phone that the statue of limitations is up and if they keep on calling than it's 1000 dollar fine each time for harassment...this includes family members...hang up the phone...don't listen to their crap.  If they send you a letter in the mail...send them this

This letter is in response to your [letter dated 06-05-2007] (copy enclosed), concerning the collection of the above referenced.
I do not believe I owe what you say I owe therefore I dispute this debt. I am well aware of my rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and my state laws so I hope to save both of us a great deal of time by letting you know that not only do I dispute the validity of this debt, I have also checked with my State Attorney General, Bill McCollum, and verified that the Statute of Limitations for enforcing this type of debt through the courts in Florida has expired. Therefore, should you decide to pursue this matter in court I intend to inform the court of my dispute of this debt and that the "statute of limitations" has expired.
This letter is your formal notification that I consider this matter closed and demand that you, or anyone affiliated with your company, stop contacting me regarding this or any other matter except to advise me that your debt collection efforts are being terminated or that you or the creditor are taking specific actions allowed by the FDCPA or my state laws.
Be advised that I consider any contact not in accordance with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act a serious violation of the law and will immediately report any violations to my State Attorney General, to the Federal Trade Commission and, if necessary, take whatever legal action is necessary to protect myself. Be advised that I tape record all phone calls and violations of the FDCPA can result in you or your company being personally fined up to $1,000 per incident.

Just change who your state attorney is...

I am wondering how people get my number and call me with no reason. Few days before one guy called me up and asked me few questions. After random search, I guess he was from Asset Acceptance LLC. I searched on their activity and got good information on them here:

I rec'd a call from them today claiming I owe $52.41 from my power company-- and they have been "trying to reach me for 4 years" and finally gave it over to collections.  Neither my work nor my home number has changed in 10 years and I'm just finding about this today??  Hardly.  Plus, I called the company and they confirmed I am current-- we have always transferred our services so the bill would have followed me.  And, since I'm set up with them for automatic bill pay, there is NO way the account is delinquent.

This company is saying that the power company would show no record of my deliquency and that is why they could not locate my debt.  Crap!  If the company at one point showed that amount as a delinquency, they would certainly record how it was resolved-- whether it was PAID or sent to collections.

Crap!

These people called and left a message looking for someone who I never heard of --the name is so weird that it doesn't sound like a name at all which makes me wonder if it's a trick to get me to call them back... One of my school loans is messed up- I'm still in school but they refuse to defer the loan even with verification from the school so they probably turned me over to this collection agency.

They've also been calling me for over three months, also looking for someone who doesn't live here.

It would be TOO easy for them to FIRST verify that the number they are calling matches the individual they are trying to dun in the White Pages.

Duh!

Dumb a---s.
