Arizona consumers are receiving collection calls from fake law firms or fake government agencies telling them they owe money to a payday loan company and threatening them with legal action, Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne said Friday.

Consumers are also being asked to provide bank account information to pay off the outstanding debt.

Horne?s office reports the collection call sounds legitimate because the company has personal identifying information including the consumer?s bank account information, full or partial Social Security number and/or driver?s license number. The company may also have information about the consumer?s employer and personal friends and relatives.

The Arizona Attorney General?s Office reminded consumers payday loans are illegal in Arizona as of June 30, 2010. If a payday loan was taken out prior to that date and a balance is still due, the consumer is still obligated to pay back the debt.

If you feel you?ve been a victim of consumer fraud, contact the Arizona Attorney General?s Office Consumer Information & Complaints Unit at (602) 542-5763 or file a consumer complaint online at: http://www.azag.gov/consumer/complaintform.html.

I was a collector for over 13 years and ran a branch office for almost 2 years. Everything they are saying is a lie. They cannot do anything that they claim. If this scamming agency or people could be found they are the ones that would be spending the time in jail. I have a brother who is a corrections officer and he would be more than willing to introduce them to a real prison. :-) What they are saying and claiming are lies. Take it from a ex-collection branch manager. They cannot issue warrants let alone get you arrested. When they call hang up...this scam agency cannot do anything they are claiming. They somehow got our information and are bilking people out of money who do no realize it is a scam. They called my wife at work saying they were going to have her arrested and left their number. I promptly called them back after my wife called. They changed their tune when I told them I was an ex-collection manager. I know I got them upset when the guy started getting pushing...I said, "you cannot do that" and they hung up. If they call back I have ways to scare them. Legitimately of course. :-) Knowing collections does has it advantages.

This has all been happening to me too!  I had a payday loan out a few years ago, and I paid it back in full on time and did everything correct I was supposed to do.  Now, 3 years later, my friends, work, and family are getting calls from these creeps!  It doesn't matter if you paid the loan back and did nothing wrong.  Every customer that used these stores had their personal identifying information sold on the black market to identity thieves by former employees of these businesses.  The thieves pay top dollar for your information and are trained to sound very threatening and real.  Ironically enough, they are the ones who are committing all kinds of felonies and if caught will surely face prison.  Some other numbers associated with this scam are:  513-301-7607, 888-408-0252, 817-400-7176...but beware because new numbers pop up each day and change all the time...that's why they are so hard to track.  And remember, any person who calls from a so called "worthless / bad check division" is going to be an actual police officer with your local police department, NOT some generic agency with a generic name using an 800 or out of state number.  If anyone calls you like this ask for their business license #, Tax ID #, State Bar Attorney License #, and badge #.  When you do this, they will more than likely hang up on you.

I received a call from the same woman, Debra Griffey and she was a nasty, rude, sarcastic person. I hung up on her. She would not give me a name of the company and when I asked her to send me paper documentation of the charges she says I have incurred, she got really awful! When I heard her turn to her other 'employee's to say she 'got another one' .. that's when I hung up. I'm glad I found this page because now I know that this was a ruse. Only thing is, she had my SS and my birth date. That makes me very, very nervous.

Just got a call at work where Katherine McKenzie from "dept of fraud" and  left a VM for me as I was on a call.  As I'm retrieving the vm, she calls back and gets a co-workere and tells her I'm being investigated for fraud.  WTF?!?!  My co-worker left her on hold while we googled the number and I found this site.  She finally hung up and called back, this time, I took the call.

I told her that she was harassing me at work and further more, I have no debt with any check places.  She then threatened me that she was headed to my office and hung up on me.

SO yeah, I'm reporting them too.

A Katherine McKenzie had originally called me when this whole "scam" calling began.  Only she called me from 817-400-7176 saying she was from Roberts, Swartz & Foster Law Firm.  This is obviously a bogus name from somewhere in Texas. Later the call came from 888-408-0252.  I reported it to my local police department who in turn told me to report it to the regional FBI office.  The police officer stopped me before I completed the information I was giving him to say they were familiar with this scam.  It has been going around for some time, but he indicated like most of these big time scams, it is virtually impossible to catch them.  They move around, use different phone numbers, and fake names and law firms.  They use scare tactics so you will contact them and offer to pay them what they want.  If you tell them you know they are fakes, they use more scare tactics to make you think they will come after you.  In the end they want to make you feel if you pay them money, they will go away.  I was told to just ignore the call if you recognize the number or hang up on them.  The only way they stop is if they realize you will not fall for their schemes.  You can try contacting the FBI, FCC, or your State Attorney General's office.  They will ask you to fill out a complaint form, but who knows if these idiots can ever be caught.

Well, this number keeps calling me but the bad part is that they are calling for random people that I do not know.  They leave all kinds of personal information about these women that I have never heard of on my voicemail.  For the first few messages I just ignored it and figured that they would smarten up.  Well, then they started calling about someone by a different name and left more personal info.  My outgoing message says my name so these idiots should know they are not reaching the correct person.  Anyhow, I called the number today and spoke with Deborah at ext 706.  She was insanely rude.  I told her I keep getting calls for women I do not know and she asked for my number.  I gave it to her and she was going to end the call.  I asked her how they got my number?  She became extremely defensive and asked me why I would think she would give me personal information about a client?  I responded quite swiftly by letting her know that I don't need her to give me any info about their client because she left it all on my voicemail.  I repeated, "How did you get my number?"  At this point she began screaming at me about "Don't you ever call a wrong number?"  I repeated, "How did you get my number?"  She continued to yell at me and provide me no info about why they keep calling me and then hung up on me.

Well, I listened to the old messages that I ignored a while back and realized that it was this same number calling for a different person!  I called the lady who left me a message back then by the name of Katherine McKenzie @ 614-500-8115.  The same lady who had just hung up on me answered the phone.  I asked for Katherine, she put me on hold and never came back to the line.

Calling my number 5+ times about random people is not just a "wrong dial".  There is something fishy and I will get to the bottom of this.

I hope by now you haven't paid them anything. Please don't let these individuals scare you.  That is their intent.  They use scare tactics in order for you to cave in and give them money.  You have been a victim of identity theft.  Do not give them any money and do not talk with them.  They cannot issue any kind of warrant for your arrest.  Only the courts can do that, and you cannot go to jail for what they are saying..  This is a total scam.  Please read my post below as well. They called me, too, and it is so obvious they are nothing but crooks!!

Please, please do not fall for this scam.  If you owe money for a bad check, no one is going to contact you in this manner.  Most places, especially banks, do not prosecute for these things. If you do owe a financial institution money, go to them directly, and most are willing to work out a payment plan. I know because I worked at a bank for over twenty years.  Financial institutions have their own internal departments to try and make collections, but prosecuting someone who most likely hasn't got the money anyway only makes the bank look bad to the public. The calls from the above phone numbers and others are because some unscrupulous employees and some employees from Cash Advance businesses that have had to close due to laws proclaiming them illegal have sold your private information to the black market for identity theft.  These people threaten you and make you believe you owe something when most likely you don't owe anything.  I just had a call from a "Debra Griffey" and later from a "Dan Miller" of a "Fraud and Worthless Check Division" from a place "that cannot be divulged" call from the above number say he would actually "come after me" if I didn't have my daughter or me pay up for a supposedly bad check she had written years ago. First of all the Statute of Limitations had already run out if this had been true and second, no legitimate company would do that, and any kind of threat to collect a debt is illegal. These people are violating the Privacy Act if they are discussing private information with anyone but the account holder.  Never give these people any money or information, especially an account number to debit.

Received calls from this number on a company issued phone stating I had a payday loan that was unpaid.  I fell in this trap several months ago and my new wife paid it.  I could not remember any loan but thought an ex-wife had done it when we were married.  A month later I was notifed that I had been scamed out of my hard earned money. This is another scam and I have learned my lesson.

It sounds to be like they provided you a standard debt validation letter.  If the letter lists the individual loans and the dates then I would guess that they are correct.  Why not have your uncle call them directly and then he can ask the questions that he is seeking answers to.  Also, if this is a payday loan, I would guess that they are not seeking payment for the "loan"  but for the check that was left.  I too got into some payday loan trouble.  I had to pay them off.  I worked with the company to get them paid.  I did have to come with a hefty down payment but it was worth it not to get in trouble.  I hope that are able to resolve this before it goes to far.

i am recieving phone calls everyday stating that i owe atlas mediation 3002 dollars from  several payday loans i got in 2006 and they told me that a warrant was going to be issued for my arrest in 72 hours if i didn't come up with half of they amouunt. they told me if i canpay half in 24 hours then they could put me on a hardship plan since i lost my job and is a full time student. this just happened to me 07-14-2011.and my uncle was going to pay the money for me but he had to hire an investigator to look into it because they couldn't mail him out a letter breaking the loans down to him. but my uncle is telling me not to worry but the company is scaring me so bad because they a telling me that when we go to court they want to prosecute me to the fullest extentwhich they say are 5 years and the company say that i have commited a felony. i remember getting 2 loans but they were only 250 a piece. i am so scared because i have never been to jail and i have nothing on my background check . i dont know what to do and they are really scaring me.
