would not say what company they were with but wanted someone to call them back regarding a shareholder's meeting on our 401K and American Fund.

Seems like they're legit, but annoying.  If you're the contact for your company 401k and you own an American Fund they are the third party responsible for following up on Proxy votes.  You can contact American Funds to abstain from voting in the future if you don't want these rare but annoying calls.
