Received a call, she allegedly left a message identified as Tammy from  Mercantile Adjustment Bureau. Stated as debt collector, we are contacting (they spelled the last name) , then if you are not (they spelled the last name), please disconnect blah blah blah. if you continue to listen you acknowledge that you are (spelled the name again)It also says this an attempt to collect a debt. It says call 888-481-4348, their phone numbers caller id 877-643-3252

Debt Collector
They identify themselves as Mercantile Adjustment Bureau.  They are a debt collection company.  I love it because their computer states "we are contacting (fill in name)" and they don't insert the name, it literally says we are contacting fill in name.  If you are not (fill in name), please disconnect this call if you continue to listen you acknowledge that you are (fill in name).....

Actually, debt collectors have to be very careful about what they reveal unless YOU are the one who owes the money, so I'm afraid you'll have to cut them some slack on being vague.  They're actually federally required to be vague unless they know they're speaking to the actual debtor.  However, one should ALWAYS ask for written proof that a debt is owed, how much, to whom, etc. before paying anything to a third party debt collector and, even then, taking care that everything is legit and on the level.

After perusing the FTC's site previously, it is my understanding collection companies can indeed contact relatives, neighbors, even your place of employment in an attempt to contact a debtor but, as you pointed out, they can't DISCUSS the debt with a third party.  However, asking someone to pass on message for an individual to call a company (and most of them have pretty vague names to try to avoid revealing too much about their business) is NOT discussing someone's debt if that is the extent of the message.  The fact that you said, "IF this is a creditor or bill collector" would seem to indicate that they did NOT violate the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. They ARE allowed to ask you to pass on a message for so-and-so to call their company about a personal matter. That's not discussing someone's debt. If they mention it's about a debt, THEN it's a violation. Look at it this way:  If you couldn't tell what the call is about based SOLELY on your conversation with the caller, it's not a violation of the 'can't discuss a debt' rule.
However, you can indeed request for them not to call you again.  Document who you spoke with and when.  Notifying them in writing is even better, but usually a verbal request seems to work for most of them if the debtor isn't at your phone number.  I've run into this problem way too many times in recent years with debt collectors looking for inlaws or even complete strangers.  Not a single one has slipped up and mentioned it was about a debt though. (Had to research that for myself, through sites like this.) Your situation may be complicated by the fact that you apparently share a phone number with at least one other person. If someone else at the phone number gives the company permission to call, then they have permission. Make sure you and your roomate are on the same page to help save you and the debt collector headaches and aggravation.

My cousin received a message from this number 1-888-481-4348 as well and when they have left the message you could barely hear their introduction as to who or what company they are calling.

The intro of the message was faint but so far we could only make out 2 letters of the company that the caller was calling from which was _IA. It seemed as if they did that purposely so you'll have to return their call. I say it's a trap!!! The caller said something about her not receiving anything from my cousin this morning. That she needs to confirm something and that if my cousin needed more time.....???  We listened to the message several times b'cuz my cousin said that she doesn't recall calling, faxing, emailing anyone about something to confirmed.

They try to sound so sincere but I know what some of you have experienced with this type of call and I'll have to agree with you guys that they can be very rude.

A few of the you mentioned BOA and my friend said that there's this one company that handles all of the credit cards of most banks and I believe my friends said FIA. I don't know what the initials stands for but that what she told me.

It would be great to know who can we report this kind of things to. Specially if they want so much information from you and they can't even give you what company they're calling from, etc.

Somebody left a message from 888-481-4348/ext.3925. I called back and asked what company it was. The guy wanted to verify my name first. I didn't do so. I merely asked why he called my number and who he was. He became nasty and even insultingly asked if i understood English. He would not entertain me until i gave him my name. But i insisted on knowing how he got my number. He terminated our conversation bluntly.
I called back without the extension number and asked the guy who answered for the name of his company. He said a representative of the Bank of America. I insisted that they tell me the name of THEIR company if they were indeed representing the Bank. He got aggressive and merely repeated his assertion of being a representative. I told him that if they were legitimate they could very well reveal who they were. I asked why they called my number. He said something about a debt and about real estate (funny, but i have no real estate), so i continued to challenge him on the legitimacy of their company. He became nasty and aggressive and told me that if I did not verify my name he could not answer my questions. Well, i continued by questioning their legitimacy again. He ended the conversation abruptly. A legitimate company would never want to be rude to customers. So that's for your bogus "representatives" and the "company" which they never want to clearly state when leaving a message on the answering machine. Beware of scams!!!

Have any of you tried to call them back today 12/14/07..  its 12:00 EST.
can't reach the number.   I refused to pay, husband wanted to negotiate, price to "cover"  the collection in full went down almost $1,000. dollars.  But here is what set off the alarm in my head.  I asked them exactly what card was I paying off.  The Mr. Wiley I spoke with,  Couldn't tell me.  What bank card it was.  His response was,  We have taken over so many banks.  But he gave me the date the card was opened,  Which was 20 yrs ago.

I would like to report this, but to whom,  and seriously what information do I have about them.   The only thing He did mention was Bank of America.  I haven't any dealing with Bank of America.

I seriously believe i barely made it under the wire from being scammed.

Debt Collector
Got a call from Brenda, in reference to my roommate's father and she said "If you can't get a message to Bill, I will have to call his neighbor and leave a message for him there."

IF this is a creditor or bill collector, they need to be informed of the Federal Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, which states that their actions are "illegal". Debt collectors CAN'T speak to anyone about a debt, outside of the person who owes the debt, not even to "leave a message". I am now trying to find their physical address, so I can send them a copy of the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, and a letter informing them NOT to call my number - ever.

call came into my Mother's house looking for me.  Mother who is older and not so telephone savvy said I hadn't lived here for awhile (which is true) and then started asking other questions.  Said it was a Bank looking for a reference, but would not say which bank or who it was.  Brenda from a Bank was all.  Does anyone know who this is? - I bet a telemarketer or bill collector.

Yes, I got a call this morning from someone looking for my brother, who lives in another state. The person left this number to call him back. Said it was "very important," but of course didn't say what company he was calling from or what it was regarding. I'm not calling it, but will give it to my brother to handle.
