Debt Collector
It?s a scam.  It just happened to me 6 weeks ago by a "Pam" at Steinberg. She was talking about a debt from 2004 that I had paid off in 2007.  When I said it was paid, she demanded proof.

This is what I learned and did and I haven?t heard from them since?

What they do is buy old debt that may or may not have been paid in full.  In fact, when they purchase these old debts it says in the contract that there is no guarantee that these debts are still valid.  Then they call using high pressure threats claiming that they have filed and are in possession of a court case number and a date to appear.  (both lies)

Here is what I did and what I recommend.  Call them back and nicely demand that they send you via U.S. Mail the following:
 1.  Validation of Debt  (Proof that they own and you OWE the debt)
 2.  Original Creditor Name and Dates of Delinquency
 3.  Current Balance

At this point they will get aggressive.  Stay cool.  DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION like your address, alternate phone number or Social Security # so the can ?validate their info.?  If they were legitimate, they would have that info.  Just be nice and say something like, "Hey guy, I don?t know you yet.  All I am asking for is validation.  There are a lot of scams out there and I want to be safe.  You understand right?!"  Whatever angle you take, just be nice and be sure to watch what you say because they record every word.

If they still give you a hard time, remind them that high pressure techniques like this are a direct violation of the FTC and you won?t have a problem filing a formal complaint.   (Once I did that I asked for her address and she REFUSED to give it to me)

Since I live in CA I informed Pam she was in violation of "The California Fair Debt Collection Practices Act" aka The Rosenthal Act.  In short, the Rosenthal Act has a 4 year statute of limitations to bring action on a stated breach of contract.  Once beyond those 4 years, they have no legal recourse.  That is the reason they desperately try to scare people in to paying quickly with a reduced amount.

Anyway, once I said all of this, she agreed to send me a letter.  It?s been 5 weeks and I still have not received a thing from these bandits.  It was just a big scam.

Best of luck and don?t let these liars push you around!   Gene from SoCal

Call from this number - Louise Garcia - Process Servers Office - Case No. SC60152
I looked up Florida law ....they have to SERVE papers( hand them to you or someone over 15 years of age).
The papers have to state the persons (Companies) involved, the date time of Serving and be under(have) a SEAL. I am going to call the number so I can get a recording to add to the voice message that was left. I will then turn it over to the State Attornies Office.
