The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

Consumer debt in America is *not* a criminal matter and collector claims are not typically sent straight to a judge. Lawful debt collection is a process, not an ambush, and you are due a chance at each stage to raise a dispute.

Whether you are called a debtor or some collector thinks you can flush one out, you have rights and options. Many are simple to exercise if you only learn how. You are entitled to proof of claim and fair treatment. If you get neither, the collection agency should *not* win your assets. You are granted control of how you are contacted, the right to dispute debt claims, and the means to sue violators at low cost. The FTC and the CFPB can start you on your homework. See also if your state laws grant additional or stronger rights.

You have either a fool for an attorney or you misheard her "advise". [sic]

- There is no "FTV.gov" to help you with abusive debt collectors. That would be the Federal Trade Commission.
- You cannot pay an "original debtor". You *are* the debtor if you owe an *original creditor*.
- Filing complaints helps others with a similar issue .... eventually. If you want relief for yourself, you need to get it in a courtroom, by suing the offending collector at their cost.

I get calls from this number and a couple of other for the same thing.  It's a scam, so don't respond or pay them anything.  I've reported them, but nothing seems to be happening.  Block them on your phone and report them to your phone carrier.  If I knew where they were actually located I'd personally go there myself, but they hide really well.

I keep getting calls about once a week from 888-550-9363 (comes up as PRIVATE).   It's always a recorded message that says papers need to be served for the last person who had my phone (it's a company phone).   It's a person that hasn't worked for us in over 10 years.  The message just says they need to serve papers at either the work address or home and to call 888-550-9363.  I called back and said I reached Walter Dixon & Associates.   It put me on hold for about 30 seconds then it hung up.   Now I wonder what this is all about.

I have been receiving these calls for the past month. They are just trying to scare people into paying them for something that isn't true.  I received some really good advise from an attorney, 1. turn them in to Consumer.ftv.gov,  2. Report them to the FBI for scam,  3. If you owe a debt pay the ORIGINAL DEBTOR not a third party collection agency. NO ORIGINAL DEBTOR WILL REFUSE YOUR PAYMENT...  These people need to be stopped..

Just got a call from this number (888-550-9363) saying they have papers to serve me however, this was a recording.  Got the same message on Dec 20, 2013 as well.  The number shows up as unknown but they left the 888 number to call.  Makes no sense why they would call to tell you that they have papers to serve you!

Caller ID showed "Unknown".  Caller stated she was "Amber Parker", trying to serve me papers.  Left phone number of 888-550-9363 to call.  (It was a pre-recorded message).  I've been getting calls for this number and 866-780-9176, saying the same thing. When I call them, I'm told its for a Payday loan that was never repaid.  I haven't used Payday loans, so it must be a fraud.
