Debt Collector
Just had "Private" number call twice in quick succession on my cell. I don't answer unidentified numbers. Some j***-off with a heavy middle-eastern/Indian accent said he was calling about a case before further action is taken and I needed to call back immediately to 888-556-3926 and reference file# 03-XXXXX

I am guessing 03 stands for the  year of this alleged debt.  Who knows.  If they think I'm going to call them back, they have another think coming.  Geez at least speak enough CLEAR English that I can half-way understand you. I don't have time to listen to a message over and over and over and over just to get bits and pieces.

I just got a call from a Michael Miranda at 888-556-3926 with a complaint # that was filed against me.  He asked for me with my maiden name which I have not used in 20 years so that was a red flag.  I am not sure if I should call back or not.  I have never recieved anything in the mail from URG so its a mystery.

ya I got these calls too. I pretended to be someone one else and spoofed my number. They say what ever they can. I called and asked how I pay it right now, and they asked for my credit card info and said they could take care of it right away. I gave them a loadable card number you can get from walmart, it had maybe 32 cents on it. Im just waiting to see what they do with it. Do they have a website or something?

Caller asked for an employee.  Said they were coming to serve papers and were checking our procedures for doing so.  I told him that he would need to speak to a manager when he came, and that we would escort the employee to them.  He then recommended that I take a message and have the employee redirect the paperwork to a place other than work.  Said that they had tried to serve him at home.  Gave me this phone number and a reference number.

So yesterday this man called me saying he worked for a law office in CA. He told me I was about to be served papers and was being sued for a 4000 dollar debt ! A debt I payed off in full to US Bank like 7 yrs ago! He said they would be willing to settle for 800...but he had to have a credit card or debit card number to set up the payment for this month!!!
I was curious and confused so I asked
him what law office and attorney he worked for...he refused to tell me...I asked what county i was being sued in...he refused to tell me.
I told him I was going to get more info on the supposed debt...at this, he got very mean and nasty saying that he would see me in court!! He said they would cut my husbands pay 35% and defer my car payments to pay this debit!
I pulled my credit report to be sure...and of course its NOT on there anymore ! I called the credit bureau and they had to put a 90 day fraud alert on my ssn bc this jerk has it !!! I also called the federal trade commission and the FCC and reported his *ss !!!
I called the Better Business Bureau and they said the phone number comes up as a " private club " and that "URG" is an air purifying business !!!!!!!

Your caller is full of crap. Wage garnishment can ONLY be ordered by a judge and it's only up to 25%. 35% is total BS. Do NOT pay him, he is a SCAMMER. The FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf treats the INITIAL CONTACT between collector and debtor (first call, first letter, first whatever) as a special event. Legit collectors per section 809 of the FDCPA *must* tell you at initial contact, or send you paperwork within 5 days of initial contact, the following:
1. $amount of debt,
2. name of the current creditor (which may differ from the original creditor who might have sold your debt),
3. a statement that that debt will be assumed to be valid unless you dispute in writing within 30 days,
4. a statement that that if you do dispute in writing within 30 days, the collector must mail you written verification of the debt,
5. a statement that if you ask the collector in writing within 30 days, the collector must send you the name and address of the original creditor if it's different from the current creditor.
If you don't get the 5 disclosures, orally or in writing (you do not have to ask for them, the FDCPA requires collectors to provide them), treat the collector like you would any SCAMMER.
Note that 3,4,5 must be done *IN WRITING* so you will need to ask an address from your collector. If s/he refuses to give you one for any reason, treat the collector like a SCAMMER.
The collector can threaten court action at initial contact but the FDCPA requires that the collector actually take you to court if the collector threatens it. Threatening court and not going through with it (coercion) is illegal.
If they say the FDCPA does not apply to them because they own your debt, the debt-owner exemption only applies to the original owner. Any 3rd party who buys the debt for the purpose of collecting debt is treated as a debt collector, i.e., ownership is irrelevant and debt buyers must obey the FDCPA as explained in this FTC Staff Opinion letter here http://www.ftc.gov/os/statutes/fdcpa/letters/arbuckle.htm
Has the statute of limitations for your state http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/SOL-by-State.html expired on your debt? If expired, don't pay.
Collectors generally have to be licensed by your state to practise (collect debt) in your state and you can find out by calling your state Attorney Generals Office. Ask if a license is required and does this collector have one. If not licensed, don't pay and file a complaint with your state AG.

I got a call today from an a man today at  888-556-3926 a Michael Miranda he stated that he worked for urg, which i found out is united recovery group. in Lehi ut.  He left a case# for me to reference and said that he was calling to ensue I was going to be home because someone would come to my home and serve me some legal papers.  I called back Oh this guy also called my mom in Richmond,Va with this bs.  I call the company back and gave the case# that they provided and I ask to speak to Michael.  The guy that I was transfered to said that Michael doesn't work for the company that he is a processor that works with the company. I told the guy to be very careful what he said because I was educated on the FDCPA laws.  The guy first of all did not give his name. when I told him to be careful what he said he got hightly irretated. I told him that Michael said he worked for the company. The guy I was speaking with told me to get off his phone because I was being condescending and hung up on me. He did not tell be why they were calling me or my family looking for me. I called back and was transfered back to the same guy and ask him why were they calling he hung up on me again when I attempted to call back they get this BLOCKED my number.  I then used a co-worker phone and was able to get through. I transfered back to the same guy he said I sound like I'm being represented and told me he reported me for harrassing the company. wow really a consumer that has a collector afraid.  He said he was going to tell me why they were calling and hung up on me again.  well he should be afraid.  They know they are breaking all sorts of FDCPA law. Starting with  s 807 (10) The use of any false representation or deceptive means to collect or attempt to collct any debt or to obtain information concerning the consumer.

These guys actually phoned me at work, even though I know better than to provide my work number to ANYBODY.  They said that they tried to send me something through the mail, and was returned each time.  I never RTS'd any letter lately.  When I called, I asked to guy to cease and desist from phoning me at work.  He took my call and request rather cordially, but we'll see if they hold true.

Guy calls from a Restricted number, and leaves message for a Lisa Strewlewicz (sp?), and that its about a complaint, and that "I" should reference number 0700977 when calling back.  I've had this number for 11 years!?!  So, something's already rotten in the State of Denmark with that!  I am so NOT returning this call!  In fact, I'm strongly thinking about reporting this phone call to the FCC!  Although, another part of me thinks I should call as "Lisa Strewlewicz" and fun with this guy!  :-)

A private number called me and left me this number, they said I had a complaint filed against me. I call the number and the prick who answered was very snarky and rude to begin with! He said that I am being sued for like $2000, which isn't worth suing anyone over and that I have been served by the gentleman that called me in the first place. I don't think that has any legal standing if done over the phone. He kept talking in circles about his company when pressed on the issue he got very defensive and threaten to put liens and holds on all  of my accounts and properties. He had all of my public information and tried to use it to scare me. In my opinion this company is a scam, they bully people to get them to buy something or give them account information. DO NOT give them any information they ask for and do not worry about what they threaten! It's a SCAM! When I told the prick that I thought it was a scam he told me to stop harassing his office and never to call again, and then hung up!

Received an "urgent message" from a John Causta(?) with a case number, stating that they need to talk to me about something that "could be filed against me."  They also found my parents' number and called them in a different city regarding my "case number."  One problem, John's message clearly said "BreNt" 3 times, not Brett.  My wife is an attorney, they get the name right, not something one overlooks in a legal matter.  Anyway, I called to tell them to take me off their call list and that I was not interested in them wasting my time.  The operator would not give me any information, kept saying "I need your case number to transfer you."  He said their company name is "URG," but would not tell me what it stood for.  He said, "it depends on your case number."  Really???  Typically, shady people are smart, but not in this case.

Don't be worried by this call.  If there is a legal matter pending, you will be notified appropriately.  Be blessed.
