These people just called my mom freaking her out by saying I was going to be taken to court. They did sound profressional. Eventhough I wasn't really sure about them, I fell in the trap. I cancelled my card immediately after reading the post from you guys thanks alot. I hope they didn't get to take it out. I should've known something was up, when she asked me if I had a calendar. Is there anything I can do about stopping the transaction faster?

AN INFORMED CONSUMER IS A DEBT COLLECTORS WORST ENEMY!
The 5 elements required to prove fraud are as follows: (1) a false statement of a material fact,(2) knowledge  that the statement is untrue, (3) intent on the part of the defendant to deceive the alleged victim, (4) justifiable reliance by the alleged victim on the statement, and (5) injury to the alleged victim as a result.
The Federal Trade Commission's Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) states: Every collector must send you a written ?validation notice? telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don?t think you owe the money.
Their constant failure to supply documentation is in direct violation of the FDCPA.
First you need to get on the FCC's Do Not Call list @ https://www.donotcall.gov/
Next you want to check you state statute of limitations @ http://www.budhibbs.com/statute_of_limitations.htm
This supposed "unpaid debt" of mine was over 12 years old, my state statute of limitations is 5 years.
Then I would STRONGLY suggest you  file your complaints with the Federal Trade Commission  @: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
I also contacted my State Attorney General. You can find contact information @ www.naag.org
To learn more about debt collection and other credit-related issues, visit www.ftc.gov/credit and MyMoney.gov, the U.S. government?s portal to financial education.
The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop, and avoid them. To file a complaint or to get free information on consumer issues, visit ftc.gov or call toll-free, 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357); TTY: 1-866-653-4261. I've been getting calls from this company from a Madeline Drake saying about an old debt I had taken care of years ago being taken to court.  I gave her my credit info not thinking it through even with her insisting that they can do nothing by mail.  After doing research on this number(which btw came up unknown on my phone, they left this to call back) I immediately canceled my credit card.  Now they are calling saying that I'm the one that committed fraud yet still nothing by mail and I can STILL settle at a lower price.  I'm thinking i might have to change my number so I stop getting harassed by these con artists.

I received a call from this number about a "potential lawsuit" and the guy's name was Brian/Something Payne. He didn't exactly have my name correct, but he went on about my needing to get in touch with him right away. I probably wouldn't have called back if I hadn't been able to find the messages on this site... but thanks to all you folks, I KNOW not to be concerned. I'm sick of people who are allowed to get away with this crap!

These people are ridiculous, they called my ma's house and this isn't the only company that has done it, but they have somehow figured out a way to scare the dog-piss out of people. I wish they would stop 90% of the time I'm out of the country and don't need my mother tracking me down afraid that I'm going to go to jail over a scam call. Don't let them scare you, get the number blocked and someone please find a way to have these CRIMINALS stop!!!

You are exactly right.  These people are making hundreds off of innocent people.  Everyone has ordered magazines at some point in their life, but most of us do not remember when.  If they are legitimate, there is no way to know.  They have no website or phone listing and they are not registered with the BBB.  They also refuse to mail any information.  They will not get my money at all.

I received a phone call from Renee Foster from Legal Services...at first, I thought it was scam cause it just didn't make sense that someone would want to take me to court for magazines. But my ditzy self signed a contract...I was 24...just got out of college...thought it would be a good idea and i do admit I stopped paying the magazine company. Ms. Foster was professional and reassured me that this indeed was a legit phone call and I settled for 1/4 of what the magazine company wanted in court. Thank you legal services!
