The 888-624-2323 number is correct for debit card activation. I just used it and sure enough, it tried to sell me the stupid privacy source service upon activation. :(

That is what I get for ripping the sticker off and getting sidetracked before activating LOL

You can also activate it at any BOA ATM just by using it and your PIN code

i've banked with BOA for several years now.

two weeks ago i received my replacement debit car which puzzled me. because i hadn't requested a new card, i decided against activating it. i received an automated call reminding me to activate my new debit card to avoid interruption in service. i, again, chose to forgo activation. after thinking about it more, i called BOA's customer service line (800-432-1000) and ran through the general prompts. the automated line rolled off my account endings and debit card endings. this list included the new card. I hadn't activated the new card! I immediately spoke with a customer service representative who explained new cards were mailed to customers with accounts that have been compromised in some capacity by a third party. the rep did not go into any detail, but merely stated that the cards were sent to protect clients and they were automatically activated five days after the cards were mailed. upon activation, the old debit cards were deactivated.

i hope this helps anyone looking for a more robust explanation. have a great day!

I just activated my debit card with this no. I still need to check if i can use it at an ATM though. that said, i probably would not have any suspicious activity in mine considering that my bank balance is usually quite low....lol!

cheers

If you look up the official activation phone number from the bank of america website, it only shows one for credit cards: 1.800.276.9939. There are no 888 numbers at all.

My chat with a representative lead me to conclude the card and accompanying letter are real, but I wasn't satisfied with their explanation of why the letter said, "We have learned that account information from certain Bank of America debit cards have been compromised at an undisclosed third party location. To protect your accounts Bank of America is presenting you with this replacement card with a new account number and your existing PIN." And a floor manager didn't recognize the phone number on the sticker.

After trying to activate the card through 1.800.276.9939, I was transferred multiple times and finally arrived at directions to either call the "activation line" 888-624-2323, a separate entity to Bank of America, or go to any Bank of America ATM and do a transaction. I will try to activate it at an ATM, but if that doesn't work tomorrow, I'm concluding it is the hardest to detect scam I've ever seen! Someone could be going around and replacing the stickers with a scam line while simultaneously playing some phone tricks, but it seems unlikely unless the people doing it work at BofA.

I called the activation number on the sticker of my Bank Of America Visa card last week; I'm not sure if it was the above number or not. I have activated cards before, and it was always a quick, and usually automated procedure---not so this time! First it was automated and then it was abruptly transferred to a customer service rep-- a guy with a rather strong spanish accent who proceeded to ask me the usual security questions, and then put me on hold for a very long time. Something did not seem right! I  activated this card only because I did not want the bank to close the account due to inactivity (the bank issued this card to me without me ever applying for it, BTW)and I used  the card the day after activation (encrypted online order from a previously used big mail order company). I paid the charge from my BoA checking account a few days later. Today 9/8, a few days later, i get a call from BoA's fraud department saying there's been a few suspicious charges on my card. I did not call back the number they gave me, because it could have been scammers, but called the number on the back of the card in question instead. Turns out the fraud number was legit, and I did indeed have 3 fraudulent charges on my card from yesterday 9/7, totaling almost 500 dollars. One charge was from some motel in Ohio, and the others from a resort in Las Vegas!I informed the BoA rep about the suspicious activation call, and asked them to check it out, but who knows what's up with that. The account was closed and I'll have to fill out some type of affidavit that I'll receive in about 10 days. I'm worried about my checking account now. I'm afraid my online account with BoA could be compromised and won't access my account online until after I go to the bank tomorrow to check my balance and to withdraw the bulk of my money!!I have done some research tonight and it turns out there is a HUGE problem with bank employee fraud. I won't keep my money in a bank that cannot keep info secure from their own employees!

Bank of America surely would not be so stupid to actively call you to activate your debit card number and ask for number over the phone via a automated machine.  Heck they can even get your birthdate or other info by asking you to verify your identity.  I simply cant imagine Bank of America being this stupid.  Maybe they are.  But I dont think so.

I would almost bet money that this company that owns this number is commiting wholesale credit card number theft using an automated machine.

So just dont use this number to give out credit card info if they call you.

The most comfusing thing is one guy put a post in saying it was the same number as he had on his sticker on his credit card.  Maybe it was the fraudster doing that too to muddy up the waters.

Is Bank of America helping fraudsters perpetuate fraud by letting their credit/debit card vender, outbound call to get people to activate their cards?  If so they need stop that at once if not then they need put whoever is doing this in jail.
