WARNING:  It is a SCAM.  They are trying to steal your information.  Do not give any of your information out.  The gas company ALREADY has your information and doesn't need to confirm your identity, specially by oppressing a number on a weekend.  Report this number.  I can't begin to tell you how many numbers call my house on a daily basis fishing for information.  Fighting with them is USELESS being that they already have your number and will call you none stop until they can confirm your information.  I just don't answer any more.  Be careful everyone.

I have received repeated calls from this number.  The answering machine has no voice message.  I have not picked up the phone on any of these.

I don't believe it is truly the Gas Company either.  And even if it is, why are they so desperate to get people to sign up for their CARE program?  How often do businesses call you up to get you to pay them LESS money??

I called them back and it truly was the So Cal Gas Co. autobot system for the CARE program for low income customers. Since it knew my name, I answered their questions just to stop the calls.

They should at least broadcast who they are on Caller ID since it's their legit business.

These callers are pressing their luck regarding their own personal safety.  They can be found!!!

I don't believe for a minute this is legitimately from The Gas Co, just a scam to get personal info.

This is SoCal Gas co. They call to offer 20% off for low income customers during their alloted registration time ( every June/July ) . If they are calling you, you should have also received something in the mail from them.

Got a call from 888-638-4742 claiming to be the gas company and wanting me to recertify in the Care program by midnight 2 days from now. When I called the number back they wanted me to press 1 to confirm my identity which of course I didn't do. Someone has been trying for a long time to steal my identity and this is another attempt at trying to get it. BEWARE

they keep calling. no message. i am also on the do not call. they are annoying...

I was gone for a month and this number was recorded as having called me 4 times in 2 days. Am on DO NOT CALL list.

Sorry for the confusion -- see my post above!  That WAS a call from the Gas Co. leaving a message offering the Care program for a couple who I've never heard of before.  

It STILL is suspicious.

I got a call & the woman said it was the Postal Service "National Customer Support" calling back -- as I'd asked (which I DID) about my claim that my mail was forwarded without my asking for it.

She gave me an 800-number to call back.  It SEEMS legit, but I will be careful what I tell them.

Could this be some kind of place that makes calls for a bunch of different companies?  It's a bit weird.

Have been calling daily, numerous times.  Do not answer.  They hang up when machine comes on.

This number call at least twice a day - sometimes more.  We never respond to the call and they do not leave a message

6-23-09 Called and hung up on my answering machine repeatedly for the last nine months.  Am on Do Not Call.  Time to CHANGE THE TELEMARKETING LAWS.  See my list of 181 pest phone numbers.  Ihese 181 phone numbers phoned repeated over the last 12 months and many call several times per day for months and I did not list half of the numbers because of lack of time. Being on the Do Not Call list brought me thousands of unwanted calls in a year. THOUSANDS.  TIME TO CHANGE THE LAWS AND OUTLAW THIS STUFF.  In the meantime, print my list and put by the phone and don't answer.  Saves time.

Calls are from Southern Ca. gas Co. in referance to their "Care" service, wich is a 20 percent discount for seniors or any one who makes less than $30,000. per year. If you qualify, this program saves $$"s during the cold months. and no, I do not work for the Gas Co. I calculated my saving to be about $200. per year. If you are on "care" you have to renew every 2 years and this is done by auto voice asking you to verify you still qualify with voice or tone dial entries. It is a voice mail system and does not leave messages on an answering machine or voice mail.

CALLED AND I LET THE MACHINE ANSWER.  NO MESSAGE LEFT. I AM ON THE DNC LIST. THEY ALSO USE 866 638-4742...SAME CRAP!

Over 150 since May, 2008 and many call for months. Print it and save yourself the hassle of answering. Each has been checked on sites like this one and they have all been complained about.

recorded message said the call was for Mr or Mrs L Montgomery.  Just kept repeating and said to press 1 if that is who you are.  Some people probably press 1 just to find out what the call is about.  Can't imagine anyone going along with whatever approach they use if one were to engage in the call.  Hung uo and called back to 8886384742 and the same message again repeated and acknowledged I was returning the call for Mr or Mrs L Montgomery. I again hung up and called 8886384742 from my cell phone and the recorded message said "I see you are calling back from a different number, then asked the number originally called".  I just hung up and searched the number on google and this site is one of several that showed up.

Received a call, but no message left on my answering machine.  I called the number and got a recorded message that it was the Gas Co. offering the California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) program. I hung up and called the Southern California Gas Company Customer Service number (800-427-2200). I questioned the representative about the 888 number.  She checked with her supervisor and reported back to me that the number is legitimate.  It's ridiculous that they don't leave a message and that the ID does not show it's the Gas Company!

I don't believe The Gas Co is making these calls, rather that it's some scam in the company's name.

i called it back. Its the Southern california gas company checking if you want to sign up for some program that gives you 20% off your gas bill if you earn less than 35,000 a year. i don't know if theres a catch or not
