An A-Rab named "Ceasar" left a message. Not believable...sounds like a new method of jihad to me...

Of course all the replies stating that the call is not a scam, could be posted here by the scammers so that they can stay in business. I suggest calling the credit care issuer (the number on your bill or the back of your credit card), instead of calling the number from the suspect caller.

People dont be stup!d, dont ever call the number someone asks you to call, call the number on the back of the card and they'll either transfer you to the correct department or give you a number to call.

Part of a fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions. Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming the number is real - an obvious giveaway.
The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real come from some con artists spamming the site to try to fool people. There is a similar pattern to other fake calls claiming to be from Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc. all with the same shill postings:

I received a message about my Shell card being compromised, and after checking out these comments took a chance and called back. It is legitimate; my card ending in 001 had been compromised ( although the service rep said his info on the computer didn't say why), and my card would be replaced with one that ends in 003. My daughter has a card on my acct that ends in 002 and hers was still o.k. ; he didn't ask for any info except the reference # left in my message, and knew my acct from my home phone , on which I was returning the call. He did also say that I wouldn't be responsible for paying any fraudulent charges, if any occur due to the compromise.

The Fraud Early Warning department is indeed real and our toll free number IS 888-658-8396 and if you are susp about the call, feel free to contact the customer service department and askd to be transferred to the fraud dept. Other wise if we are trying to secure your account and you choose not to respond, it may result in your account being blocked until you do so.

Call came through from a 972-653-1000 and left a voice mail message stating they were from the ?Shell fraud Division? and that they were alerting me that my Shell card ?001? had been compromised. I was required to call them at 1- 888-658-8396 to have it replaced. They are available 8:00 AM-3:00 PM 7 days a week and to use the 4 digit reference# XXXX. Sc@mmers! Beware!!

Received a message about our gas card and was hesitant to call this number back so called the one on the back of our card and was transferred to the fraud department and found out the card had been breached and immediately cancelled the card. Thank you CITI for taking care of your customers.

I read these posts after receiving a call that left a message and it made me nervous so I called the number on the back of the card, they put me through to their fraud department and the card in question had been breached by a reader placed on a gas pump. Don't write these calls off as a scam call and actually find out what is going on. We live in a small town so it can happen anywhere.

Person calls and states that we have a Sunoco credit card. They ask for our social security number, it is very annoying.
Maren 2011-11-18 19:10:07 Unknown
Not all departments have the information. You called customer service. You need to talk to Fraud Early Warning at the 888 number, or ask to be transferred to that department.
MarenJR 2011-11-18 18:21:34 Unknown
I work for Citi and this is not a scam. We are constantly investigating fraud, and if we feel your information has been obtained will call you to let you know your card is compromised. This is for your protection
ExxonMobil 2011-11-16 00:06:47 Unknown
I received a call from the same number and was suspicious so I Googled it and read all the information posted here. To be safe I called the number on my Exxon Mobil statement and sure enough the number was legit and my card had been compromised and a new card needed to be issued. It is worth calling at the very least a number from your statement or from the back of your card, they can then connect you to this department if there really was a problem.

I returned a call to this number, giving them the "reference number" they left in the message. They didn't know my name or what card they were calling about. So I hung up. Either a scam or terribly disorganized company.

I too received this call but it was concerning a 76 card. I went directly to their website and e-mailed their fraud division. Turns out the # was legit. They said if I did not feel comfortable using that #, to call the number on the back of the card. Magnetic strip info was comprimised. They showed no suspicious activity as of yet, but were going to re-issue a new card. I gave no personal info. except zip code to verify. They had all the info.Worth pursuing!
JB 2011-06-14 03:06:55 Unknown
I, too was suspicious, but in my opinion this number is not a scam; it is a Fraud Early detection department for many credit card companies. I called back and didn't have to provide any information other than the short reference number they left in their voicemail. They were able to identify me with that and knew that I was calling from home, and they could see that the card had a zero balance. The problem was the number had been compromised, and they issued a block on the account and said that a replacement card would be sent in the mail right away.
I did not provide them with any personal information on the call at all -- no social, no address, no telephone number. Nothing but the reference number.
ej 2011-06-06 21:05:52 Unknown
got the same call today, seemed fishy to me which is why I decided to do a search on the # apparently it is indeed fishy

Got a call from 888-658-8396 from shell supposedly!!! Said that my card was 'compromised' Called shell directly and they have no such number...and did not generate this query. This is a scam!!!

This number is legitimate. I got a voice message saying that my Mobil gas card had a security issue and I should call this number to resolve it ASAP. The call was fishy, so instead of calling this number, I called the toll-free number listed on the back of my gas card. I told the Mobil customer service rep of the call and provided her with the phone number. She then checked and told me it was the number for Citi Corp, a company that handles all their security related issues. Instead of dialing the number myself, which I was still reluctant to do so, I requested that she transfered my call to that number. She did it, and I ended up talking with a Citi Corp customer service rep to resolve the whole situation. My suggestion is: If you are uncomfortable calling this number directly, it is always a good idea to call the toll-free number listed on the back of your card and ask that they transfer your call to this number.

Got a call from this number, it is definitly legitimate. It's a fraud prevention company that handles accounts from several credit card issuers. I called the number 1st and balked at giving info, hung up and was reconnected to the same dept through the number on the back of my Exxon card. I confirmed that 888-658-8396 was there correct contact number and as it turns out although I have no balance on the card, they discovered the info was "skimmed" electronically after may last use and was compromised. Hence new card on the way.

Had a phone message when I got home stating they were the Exxon Mobile Fraud Early Warning Dept. They gave this phone number and requested I call back with my account number. I had my doubts about the call so I called the 800 number on the back of my card. Turns out it was a legitimate call. Looks like these company's have contracted with some type of fraud prevention company which is why there are so many different companies with the same phone number.

This is a legitimate number for Union 76. After speaking with the person who called, I too became suspicious because they are company gas cards and followed it up with a call to customer service at Union 76. Customer service read back to me the notes in which the fraud department had put on the account, some of the notes were the actual conversation I had with them. I also verified the phone number 888-658-8396 and the Union 76 customer service apologized for the scare and said it is their fraud department and they periodically scan the accounts looking for activity in high crime areas. No cards need to be canceled and re-issue.

Got a call today regarding my Union 76 card about a "Security Alert". I called the 888 number before Googling the number. I had given some info before realizing what was happening. Cut the call short and called Union 76. They didn't recognize the the 888 number. The recommended canceling the cards and to issue new cards. Seems to be a "Scam"

I got a "Security Alert" call from this number warning me about Union 76 card transactions. I called Union 76 and they said it was a legitament number and was their Security department. They operate for the mother bank Citi Corp who manages Unions Accounts. They are where you need to go if you are having security problems with your card and or suspicious activity. That is what they monitor and do all day long as monitor your cards for your protection. They do not advertise the number as they do not want customer service calls in general but just security focused calls-which generally they generate by calling you. You are wise to call your institution first and verify the number but in some cases they are calling you on the weekend or nights when your regualar institution number is not going to reach someone. I had a call like this from a place referencing my personal bank card and found they had put a hold on my card because of a large transaction that said it was from another state (because the purchase was at a fair), was able to call them back and get the hold lifted off the card so could continue using it. They say that our bank contracted with them to secure our card.

Definitely a scam, Felicia at 888-658-8396 called my work number and said there's an issue with my "Shell" card. The funny thing is I do not have a shell card. I called and asked for Felicia and the lady could not tell me if there was a Felicia there or not but asked for my home number and my SS#, I did not give her my SS# but I did give her an old home phone number. She still needed my SS#, I told her I was not comfortable giving her my SS#, she said then she cannot tell me what Felicia called me about. So I just said good bye to her.

Follow up to May 26, 2010 post..... I called the numbers on the Shell card and the on line account. They confirmed my card had been compromised and a new card would be issued. Customer service stated that the call was legitimate. In my opinion, they should have contacted, informed and instructed me to call the numbers on the card or on line..........

Got call from "Blake" Same message as above on possible fraud on card ending "001." Checked google. Caller id 801-779-7000. I haven't checked it out yet. Oh, Balke, I didn't justfall off a turnip truck.

Six months later and they are still trying to scam people. "Robin" left a message from the "Security"
division of "Shell" saying there was a problem with my card ending in 001 and that I was to call back
this number, being sure to have my account number handy. I could speak with any representative. I
went to the web to verify the number and came up with this list. Don't call them back.

I got the same message today about my Shell card. I will call the number on the back of my Shell card before I call back this 888 number.
