Telemarketer
This appears to be either a telemarketer or a scam. The caller ID shows up as California but the person I spoke with introduced himself as Kyle Jones of First US Merchant Services. He asked to speak with the person who handles our credit card choices.

Debt Collector
I get calls from this company every other day and today I even got one on my cell phone.  Nobody but 4 people have my cell phone number so how they got it I have no idea.  They always call from 888 numbers and so far there are 3 different ones they use.  I have no debt and they never leave messages so I refuse to answer their calls or any 888 numbers.  How can we put a stop to this!

This number has been calling me since February. The first time I saw it, I didn't recognize it, so I didn't answer and they didn't leave a message. Since then I get calls from this number at least once a week, 2-3 times in a day. I still have not answered and after seeing the other postings about this number I'm not going to.

This number calls me every week, sometimes twice a day.
I was a victim of fraud, filed a PR, notified the three credit reporting bureaus and did all that the law requires, but these unscruplous credit card companies don't care and once I use to inform the caller about the fraud, but the CC company would just assign it out to someone else, another debt collector and then it starts all over again. So now, with caller ID, I just don't answer. Just advise all others not to answer this call and ALWAYS look at your caller ID.

Seems as though its a fraud, trying to get ahold of someone and asking for money. Fing camel jockies need to piss off. Probably got our numbers from one of the customer suport company's. Hell, probably the same company. Good job CEO's, giving away all the American jobs to a bunch of scamming fuks!

Debt Collector
As others have stated, they are Plaza Associates, a junk-debt collector firm. They have been calling my cell-phone number for months (years?) from dozens of different phone numbers.

They called me twice on 4/25/11. Didn't leave a message either time. The second time I answered and they sounded Indian and asked for a Charles or something. I said you got the wrong number and they said Is this (my cell phone number)? and I said yes but i'm not who you are looking for, do not call back.

harassing call from this number (1-888-661-4766) everyday 3-4 times, especially when I am attending a meeting or in the library. This SOB (1-888-661-4766) should be shot to death while hanging upside down naked on a bamboo pole.

Those are a bunch of thieves using many many different names and numbers. Google "Portfolio Recovery" those are the same people and they are being sued in many states. Be very aware. Some of the other numbers they use are (800)772-1413, (800)654-8818, (757)519-9300, (202)607-2733, (202)607-2733, (847)994-2550, (512)906-3892, (847)994-2557, (913) 871-6259 along with sending texts to cell phones and calling from international numbers and four and five digit numbers. . An absolute illegal operation that makes me worried they might be involved in illegal criminal activities for foreign countries against US citizens from the way they act.

Debt Collector
They called me about a debt from 1996, which was paid in full in 1998.  I asked that they prove the validity of the debt because I have proof of payment for the entire debt from the canceled check paid to the original creditor.

They tried to tell me that I paid the wrong party and and I still owe the entire amount plus interest and I need to make the check out to THEM.  After speaking with my attorney, he advised me that I am not to admit that the debt even existed at all.  They record all their calls, and admitting of a debt, valid or not, or paid off or not is proof enough for them to start the "collection clock" all over, and legally can harass you because you admitted the debt existed and they can prove you didn't pay THEM, regardless if you paid the original creditor or another collection agency or not.  Sadly, that's all it takes to be able to harass you.

These companies buy and sell debt records literally for pennies...not pennies on the dollar, but just pennies.  They try to collect on the suspossed debt, and any amount collected is pure profit, but when they fail, they sell the debt record to another collection agency, and the process starts all over.  Your debt record becomes part of a "musical chairs" game.  When one collection agency can't collect, another one will try.  It is possible that the same collection agency will try to collect on the same debt but years apart.  Even if you pay them, another agency will say you paid the wrong party and you still owe THEM.  Any payment of any kind, even as little as $1 will start the "Collection Clock" over again, and chances are, they will keep harrassing you for more money, but they will never pay off the original creditor, so your debt will still exist even if you paid the collection agency.

My lawyer advised that if you have proof of the debt being paid or taken care thru some other means (charge off, bankruptcy, etc), then ask for the persons name, ID #, and ask to speak with a supervisor.  It is illegal for them to not provide that info when requested. They will refuse, say one isn't available, or say they are the supervisor.   I just tell them I can wait until a supervisor becomes available.  That's usually when they hang up.

Tell them you are recording the call, and if they refuse to give any of your requested info which you are legally capable of doing, or failure to get a supervisor, remind them again you are recording the call.  Even if the actual "call center" is outside the US, the US company that hired them is still responsible to make sure that when they are calling a US resident who is physically still in the US, they still need to abide by US laws.  Failure to provide validity of proof of the debt is illegal, and the party who hired the foreign call center to collect is as guilty of breaking that law as is the foreign call center regardless if they don't know the collection agency is breaking the law.  It's their responsibility to amke sure they are not breaking the law.  It's in their contract.

There is no call center or hired collection agency who would sign a contract if that was not included, because it frees them from certain obligations of following the law if caught.  If they break the law trying to collect, and they are busted, they can just claim that the company that hired them did not advise them they were breaking the law.  It provides them with a limited "get out of jail free" card.

One of my favorite ones is to ask for a mailing address of their business so my attorney can fill out the papers correctly, and make it easier for the process server to serve the papers to them that they are being sued.  I have yet to have stay on the phone after that point.

I receive calls from this number repeatedly DAILY. I did call them back this evening and the lady told me that she was with Plaza but then informed me that I had called the wrong department. I kept trying to get her to tell me why they kept calling but she would just say I had called the wrong department. I got so frustrated with her I finally just said you stupid Indian and hung up.
