Again, I encourage anyone who is truly unable to repay their student loans to do the necessary research into the applicable law and regulations. The Department of Education DOES have the discretion to discharge student loans under certain circumstances and those extend beyond the death of the debtor.

It is obvious that the debt collection companies are posting to this and other consumer websites with biased information.  They have a vested financial interest in people working only through them and therefore cannot be relied upon to deliver truthful and complete information to consumers.   These company shills do not have "The Answer."

This is not true. Student loans CAN be discharged. There are a number of avenues to achieve this and anyone who is truly unable to repay student loans should avail themselves of the applicable law and regulations.

Debt Collector
An Employee (Sabron Evans 1-888-668-6920 x3125) from FAMS called me at work last week to talk about an outstanding Education loan.
I informed him to contact me after work at home or cell and privided the number. He went on and on about asking some in-depth personal questions. I only answered a few, then told him that I'm very busy and not to call me at work.
I never told him that I wouldn't try to work something out to pay this debt, but it's going to be on my time, money, and if it fits within my budget.
He did try to call me while I was away from my phone, but when I called him back, he was gone for the day....so what happened.
He started calling my HR department at my job, and this is a "Huge" bad idea on his behalf and FAMS:
Read below what's illegal from an attorney:
If a debt collector claims he is just "verifying employment," this is usually illegal.
If a debt collector calls you after you tell them to stop and asks for your "H.R. Department," is illegal.
I contacted his supervisor "Mrs. Foster" and she apologized and I asked that they never contact my place of employment again.
Mrs Foster said he was only calling to verify employment, which is illegal, but that's not all he did. He tried to get salary information and tell the person from HR what it was all about.
For those of you that have to do the collection job, I feel sorry for you people.
They try all thier street smarts in getting someone to pay up, but in the end there are laws, and that's why most of those working in a collection agency like FAMS have criminal backgrounds and this is the only job they can get.
They hustle on the street, so why not in the office....
If you're collecting for FAMS, what do you do if your name comes up....guess what it doesn't because you're not educated. You couldn;t get the loan in the first place.
Good luck in your life endvours and hope you never get heckled like you do others......
If a debt collector calls you after you tell them to stop and asks for your supervisor, is illegal.
If a debt collector faxes you after you tell them to stop calling you at work, this is illegal.

They asked for the balance in full because that promissory note that you signed when you got the loan states that when you when you end up in default the BALANCE IN FULL is due!  There are rules and collectors must follow them, however, there are also programs that they can offer to help get you out of default.  Maybe next time you can take the time to listen since you obviously didn't take the time to pay your debts!!!!

These people are really TRYING TO HELP you get out of the hole you dug for yourself, just take 10-15 minutes and listen, the longer you let it linger on the larger the debt grows and it WILL NOT go away. Well at least not until you're 6' under.

They deal with people who have defaulted on their student loans and they are not the stereotypical bill collectors.  They are actually educated people who make good money hunting down people who are too ignorant to make an attempt to make good on a loan.

The best thing you can do is give them the info to contact who they need to contact so they can HELP the person they are looking for get out of default and get back on track!  The collectors aren't the bad guys here, the bad guys are the bums that are too ignorant to attempt to get themselves out of the situation they got themselves in!

I agree with most of that except that if you take out a loan you should pay it back!

Sounds like the person who gave you the message didn't relay the info accurately.  She was calling on behalf of the US Dept Of Ed in regards to a defaulted student loan and no it wouldn't be coming from the bank in which the loan orginated.  When you go into default the Dept of Ed contracts collection agencies to recover the monies from people who don't pay their bills!  She may not have had the correct person when she called you, if in fact your school loans are paid off like you say, however, if you took the time to call her back you would have found that out and you would be doing your part in helping her to find the bum with the same name as you who's too irresponsible to take care of his debts!!!!

A man from FAMS called my cell and gave me the entire SSN of the person they are trying to reach which is not me but someone with my name, the next day the called my office per the caller ID and it was 6:55 a.m.and 6:57 a.m., then the called back in the afternoon where I advised they are calling the wrong person. We will see how long this goes on but they are going to get sued giving out people SSN's and calling people at 7 in the morning.

Ms. Martin from the U.S. Dept of Finance (as if there is such a place) called my former employer saying her number is 888-668-6920 X3194. According to my former colleague who took the call, she was rude. I won't be calling her back, based on the informatin here.  By the way, if this is about student loan debts, as someone suggested, it would be coming from the bank from whom the loan was made, not some ficticious gov't agency.  And I paid all my student loans back years ago and have the documents to prove it.

These cruds should be calling Dick Cheney and Halliburton and asking where the trillions of taxpayer dollars are that, owere banked off shore in 70 different countries around the world, immune from United States tax codes and ripped off from Ameican taxpayers, used to finance an illegal war and line their own pockets.

Little birdies should be punched in the face repeatedly.

I got a message from Lydia asking her to call her on 888-668-6920 x3126; she gave me the same story.....she was working for the government and was trying to collect on my Student Loan - even though I have only been out of school for only two years; they even want all $39,000.   She is calling me at work and on my cell phone and I'm now being threatened with garnishment.

I am fed up with know-it-alls that need a real job.  Obvious, little birdies do not always want to hear the truth.  Well, little birdie, maybe you should find a job in another profession...wait...that's right from what you wrote you have found the perfect profession...a no good...no truth telling...can't find a REAL job...collector.  I would never be so feable minded as to think you would actually admit that collection agencies do make mistakes...never would I expect you to admit that collection agencies do use harassing tactics...never would I expect you to admit that you often do discuss anything you know with people whether or not you have verified information because you will stop at nothing...I would never expect you to have descent morals...I would never expect you to admit that not all of America dodges debt...I would never expect you to finally admit that the rest of the world is not beneath the social hierarchy of a collector...I wouldn't expect you to admit that obviously your job is very boring because you are searching every site of the internet trying to profess your worthiness because no one would believe you in person...I would however, expect you to do as your mother taught you, be kind to others, respect your fellow man, and never put yourself above others as one day you may be on that receiving end.

It is not a telemarketing company, nor is it a scam. nobody ever asks for ssn's, but simply to verify the last 4 digits, which used alone is worthless. Without verifying your speaking with the correct person how can you properly explain the reason for calling without disclosing private information. If you were not dodging debts in the first place and would handle your business you wouldn't have this problem would you. And for your information student loans are non dischargable and never go away By LAW.

Financial Asset. Ext 119 from a "Mrs Turner".  Stated they were a department of the "government".  Would not identify themselves in any more detail.  Tried to get my social security#. Mentioned the names and business they were reportably tring to reach as the "New Faith Ministries" a Patrice Jacques and Gregory for garnishment. Got bad vibes as a legit business would not give out this info while trying to get your info.

I received a call from these people yesterday.  They were looking for my stepson...who has never lived with us.  I returned the call and asked what it was about.  They told me that they were a government office and it was a call about a student education loan.  I did ask them to remove my number from anything associated with this loan as my stepson is grown and has never lived here.  Hopefully this is the last I'll hear from them...but you know how that goes!
