I was suspicious myself but come to find out IMPAC is the holder of the mortgage and GMAC just services the mortgage.  I ended up talking to them, even though I thought GMAC was the mortgage holder....it was the best thing I ever did!  They were required by the Feds to help people modify their mortgage and they knocked my mortgage down from $1350/mth to $820/mth.

Do yourself a favor and take this call....I am now saving myself $500/mth!

Calls repeatedly and leaves no message.  Called them and it is the Impact people told them to take me off their list, I didn't know who they were and I don't even have an account with GMAC. We will see if this works

I "have a GMAC mortgage".  But that is not the case.  GMAC is the mortgage servicer and IMPAC, not Impact, owns my mortgage.  IMPAC is an investor and GMAC collects mortgage payments and does all the paperwork for many mortgage owners.  So actually the mortgage owner, IMPAC in my case, calls the shots but some GMAC person on the phone may not see it that way.  Foreclosure costs a mortgage owner. Fees from foreclosures benefit servicers.

Both GMAC and IMPAC, not Impact, do loan modifications but their interests are different.  GMAC acts as though it does a loan modification but has to forward the application to the mortgage owner, IMPAC in my case, for approval and completion.  GMAC and IMPAC are not quite on the same page though they say they are.  I've gotten different stories (some true) from GMAC and one from IMPAC.

All this is hard to take.  The phone calls and letters leave one fearing a scam.

In addition GMAC has other financial businesses that on their face have nothing to do with mortgages.  I got a call from GMAC about credit card debt.  The guy mentioned my IMPAC mortgage, which was really confusing.

I answered this call after several days of them calling and not leaving a message. They said they were a Company called Impact that GMAC services their home loans. Told the guy that GMAC should notify me if that was the case.
