I just received a call from this company.  Asked if "My Name" was available. When I asked who was calling they identified themselves as American Express. They then said they'd called by mistake and hung up. Very strange. I will be calling AMEX to report.

I was getting numerous calls from this # but never answered. When I googled it and found this site, I called the # on the back of my card. They confirmed that this is a true Amex # but found no message on my account. I finally answered tonight and they were looking for a relative. If you don't have an account, it's very likely they are trying to find someone you may know. Apparently, they are allowed to do that.

This is not a legitimate call and you are most likely part of the scam because scammers know of this site. They often use "this is the real deal" comments to keep people off balance. I have access to my FICO score and I know all of my balances. You are a douche and so are your friends at this number.

Got a call from this number. Will ignore it like I do EVERY call from any so-called credit company. Just because it is a "legitimate" phone number does not mean the caller originated from this number. This would explain the confusion at customer service when you called the number on the back of your card....there was no "issue".

If your account is "overdue" or there is a "problem" it will show up when you log onto your account. I would suggest logging onto your account and if you see no "issue" then it was a fake call...PERIOD! Their website will tell you of any activity or "overdue" issue. You would also get an email. Like always, never use a link that is included in ANY email.

With the current digital age, software can have anything the fake caller wants to come up on your caller i.d. It doesn't mean it is a legitimate call just because it is a "legitimate" number on the caller i.d.

Received an automated message saying they were American Express, needing to discuss an important matter, and to call this number. Instead, I called the customer service number on the back of my card and the rep confirmed this is NOT an AMEX phone number, and they show NO record of having called me today, nor any reason they needed to contact me. The rep said she would report this to their security team. It's very shady; don't respond to this call.

Shayne - what about those of us who don't HAVE an American Express card? Am I an idiot, too? I have a family member who works for AMEX and they do not handle call in this manner. FYI.

This number is legit. Its for American Express High Balance collections. And FYI, they do not have a there's phone number look up. They can look you up by full account number, full social, or a combination of first and last name and social (which does take a minute or two so be patient) all of you who are saying this is a scam are idiots, and are probably being called because you didn't pay your bill.

Confirmed with American express that they will not call people that have accounts in this manner.  Do not give any info to these people. It is also a number that is not recognized by American Express. It is a scam, confirmed.

You should check your credit report.  You gave a stranger your SS # over the phone.  If you don't have an AMEX acct. you shouldn't have given them any info. especially your SS#.  Good luck.

Was called by this number last night.  Left a very general message and a number to call back.  As soon as the 888-819-2135 picks up, they ask for your account #.  I cannot think of any situation where it would be a good idea to call a number back and give out that number or any personal info at all.  ALWAYS only use the number on the back of your card.  Who knows whether to trust this phone number or not, so better off protect yourself and not give out any info.  No downside to that, right?

Replying to myself here, but I did end up just calling the number on the back of the card and had them check the other number that called, and it turned out to be legitimate.

The customer service rep said to always call the number on the back of my card first if I don't recognize the number calling.

I just called it back, because of the following:

- I have both corporate and personal cards

- Amex only has my home number but not my work number for my personal card. They DO have both my home and work phone numbers on my corporate card.

- I received voicemails at home AND at work at the same time. (8:30pm on a friday at home, and my work phone system emails me voicemail attachments, and i received one a minute later)

- I assumed because of the above it was for the corporate card, and because i was running late on last statement, but caught up. I owed zero but still had the red "overdue" warning on the amex online account management site. Closing date is today too.

- I figured I'd call back and enter the corporate card digits, definitely not my personal one. I was calling from home, the message simply responded that "the number you are calling from matches your account" and "your account is up to date and no payment is due at this time, you may hang up now".

Luckily it was legit but in retrospect it was still a stupid move. I should have just called the number on the back of the card. I'd call back now but it's 10:40pm and who knows which country call center i'll get routed to.

Always call the number on the back of the card first!

My suspicions about this call are based the fact that they left messages on my work phone which I have only had for about a year and never connected it to my Amex account. I just got a similar call from "Bank or America" on my new work phone and don't have an account there.

I do not have an AMEX but my fiance does (I am not on his account).  I recieved a call on my cell phone from 888-819-2135 and they identified themselves as AMEX customer service and asked for my fiance.  When I explained he could not be reached at this number because it was my cell I asked why they would have my phone number.  The rep said it was likely because at some point my fiance called AMEX from my phone (which is possible).

The call was legit because my fiance had been disconnected from a call HE had placed to THEM just moments before the call to me so we suspect they were trying to reach him back.  But - heads up to all AMEX customers - they keep all caller ID records from any phone you call them from!  When my fiance reached them back and asked about this call to me that is what he was told.  So if you call from a hotel while you are out of town or a friend's house..whatever, they add that number to your account as a possible contact.  How scary is that?!  And AMEX customer service will not tell you what numbers they have for you...you have to tell them what they are to verify!  How could you possibly know if you've been a long time customer and especially one who has moved and/or travels!

Our take on this is it's a legitimate phone number to AMEX but a terrible and scary policy on their part.  Hopefully you AMEX holders have never called from a number where they could later find a dishonest person on the other end.  All it takes is one sloppy customer service representative and your info is out there!

AMEX called me.  No account with them.  I called the # anyway to find out.  RUDE rep demanded my acct#.  Explained i do not have an acct with AMEX.  Then asked for the ph# that I got the msg on.  After I gave him the number he started getting mean and loud with me!  Saying there is a past balance on the acct and it will go to collections if we do not sort it out now.  I laughed and told him they have the wrong number and if they call back I will contact an attorney to have them deal with AMEX legal.  I shouted "You are harassing me for no reason and I will file a complaint"  the rep kept saying there is a past due amount but I hung up on him.  outrageous!

I received the same call (with CallerID (623) 492-6031) just now, telling me to call the 888-819-2135 number.  I do think it's legitimate because I do have an issue with AmEx right now (I've been sick for over 3 weeks and could not get to my Credit Union to get a check for my bill on time before the payment was due, so it's overdue).  The timing is just too coincidental for this to be a scam, methinks.

I got the same phone call from this number, and got the same message. It sounded pretty fishy (Considering I don't have an AmEx card), so I called up AmEx Small Business customer service to see what the deal was. The CSR informed me that it was in deed a valid AmEx number. It was actually my Dad's card they were calling me about (We have the same name, except I'm the second). I don't know how my phone number got associated with it.

Yes, the # still is being used for the purpose of gaining personal history.  I am calling AmEx legal department as this may be an employee.  If it is a valid # being used during business hours??? Otherwise a call back ask for a 16 digit account number (not last four).  They have called every day for two weeks and can't detour them from calling again.(and again)...BTW my husband's small business recently open an account.

I got the same calls.  Rather than calling the number left for me in a phone message I called the number on the back of my card.  AMEX just wanted to verify a charge that I had recently (legitimately) made online.  When in doubt - just call the number on the back of your card.

Have been getting these calls that are a recording telling me to call back (800-453-2044) saying that there is an important 'business matter' that I must call back before the end of the day.  Having an AMEX card, I tried to call back and right away get a recording to enter my account number.  I bypassed this and got a live person on the line who asked for an account number right away.  I refused to give my number and hung up.  What a sneaky way to scam people out of their info.  Just wanted to warn everyone not to fall for this phone scam!  I am gathering evidence to report to the proper legal and investigative authorities.
