Whatever happened to a person's right not to be disturbed from the first place, I did not consent to receive a call from the beginning. There ought to be a law . a PRIVATE home personal number SHOULD NOT be called unless you know the person you are calling or they have given out this number to you and consented on receiving calls. NO to telemarketing NO to surveys shmurveys and NO to politicians who do not LISTEN NOR Have the decency to respect a person right for PRIVACY and not be disturbed at home. STOP THESE CALLS. No VOTE unless firm action taken against these types of calls and strict laws about using the phone book for telemarketing and soliciting. It is not helping the economy as claimed it annoys people and disrupts their resting time.

If you are kind enough to answer the year and month you were born, the caller then will ask your financial situation, how many people in your household, your degree...

I felt I was being fooled, never answer this next time, because first of all, you could not verify the caller's ID, how the information will be used

I have blocked the number after telling them I do not do surveys.  I also followed the advice above and called them to ask that my number be removed.  Gentleman was very polite, said he would remove it and asked if I knew what survey it was for...I said did not know but that I do not do surveys.  He said it was for govt source.   I do not care  they already waste enough of my money

I used to work here - politely answer and request to be removed from the calling list if you don't wish to participate in a survey. Believe it or not they DO operate within strict protocols and are ethically obligated to remove your number. As long as you explicitly state that you do not wish to be called back, they will not. They aren't a market research company, they do academic studies. Try a survey out if you have time - they are actually pretty interesting.

One of the survey questions was what year and month were you born?
That is probably a scammers question.  So I still doubt they are from York U.

Called them back. Spoke to a live person. Told him I had asked to be taken off calling list some time in the past. Gave him my numbers and he nicely said he would remove my numbers from their calling list.

i just got the call from this number with a lady saying she was calling in from the institute of social research at york university.
the second i heard her say that, I kindly said I do not want to continue with these calls.
lady: oh, but your number was one of those that was chosen...
me: sure but no thanks, i've had enough of these survey calls and i would like to be taken off the list
lady: are you sure?....because..
me: (cuts in) yes i'm sure, are you done?
lady: well before you hang up, our research group is focused on families that have children ages 5-19, do you have any kids in this range?
me: no
lady: (rude tone now) well you weren't qualified anyways, so next time don't say no so fast...
me: how dare you talk to me like that? you're so rude! i said nicely at first that i wasn't interested, if you picked up these survey calls 3 times a day from monday through to friday, you would know how i feel!!

honestly, i've never met a woman so rude like her before on these survey/research calls...

I just spoke with them - the first time on their answering machine and as I was making my complaint to the national do not call list, I called again and they answered. I told them that their telephone behaviour was equal to a telemarketer and that they should be transparent (show up on call display) and have the courtesy to leave a brief message. I might have called back and done the survey as I value academic research. But given the fact that they have called numerous times over the weeks and never shown the courtesy of communication, I have asked to be removed from their calling list.

These people have no respect for minors.they wanted to talk to my 11yr old daughter.then when i got on the phone i asked why it came up unknown.were sorry for not being honest about who i am.She gave me a number to call back to confirm.And as i suspected this is where i ended up the next day.     I bet if i gave my credit info I would be a few dollars lighter in my account. Just got the call again. My phone blocked the number so that's OK.

Been getting at least one call a day from this number for the past month. Never leaves a message.

Annoying, they keep callling me with surveys.. to which I always decline.  I asked them to take me off their call list, and they said there is no call list and that their numbers are "randomly generated".  What fricking bu***hit.

If they are randomly generated they must be re-dialling the number if you don't answer because I am getting a call every other day.

I just got this call but did not answer. I was curious to see if the other respondent was correct about it being York U. It is. You can verify the # at http://www.isr.yorku.ca/faq.html. Also, you can read why and how they generate numbers for research. And to correct an earlier commentor, the numbers ARE randomly generated. Anyone who has ever done survey research knows this to be true.

They represented themselves as the City of Toronto Public Health Dept. and requested that I partiipate in a telephone survey.

Best solution . . . simply don't answer ANY calls from 800, 866, 888 etc. numbers.

Answering a call from a number you don't recognize is like opening the door to a stranger.

York University Institute For Social Research.....Apparently York U. places 'random' cold calls to, well do some collecting and analysis of social statistics.....Now I'm no enumerative combinatorialist, but I can fathom the sheer unlikeliness of 3 'random' calls, placed on 3 consecutive Saturdays, all between 11 and 12 AM.....In conclusion, if they are honest when they say they place random calls and do not maintain a 'DO' or 'DO NOT' call list, than I believe the 'fates' must be trying to tell me to play the lottery...either that or they are lying when they tell you it's randomized....From my aggravated experience I say, "Just too unlikely."
