I got a text message from 18888745817 saying that I had a recent restriction on my account. I knew that it was a scam because I have no credit cards with a company of this name. I called just to see what they would say and they even went as far as to ask for my cvc number. RED FLAG!!!!!

"8888745817@bantele.no//Credit Union N.A. Please call us immediately at 1-888-874-5817 regarding recent restriction placed on your account. Thank you."

I have an 808# with T-Mobile (from UpNext, Ala Moana), but kept the number and live on the east coast.  Very lame scheme.

I got one also on 1/30/09 at 1am. Sounds like everyone's getting it around the same time at the 808 area code. I'm going to call T Mobile to find out. In the meantime I also got a text of the same thing stating it's from Aloha Pacific Credit Union. the number is 1-866-925-2651 on 2/1/09 at around 12:30pm.  Be careful

Yup, me too! These people also are texting from 866-925-4932 and 866-734-6243. They claim to be "Miami Dade Federal Credit Union" and "Dade country FCU". Same scam as the numbers you have all listed above. Same exact recording.

Hmmm. I'm w/ T-Mobile...I wonder, if like another poster wrote earlier, they've somehow managed to get a list of T-Mobile numbers? Scary!

No one SOLD your phone number. Don't point fingers at Cell Phone providers just because YOU don't know how things work. This is why.

People think that spammers do this:

1) Buy phone numbers from cell phone companies
2) Send spam!

Really now? It's that simple? WOW! Are YOU THAT SPECIAL? No. You are not. You are a simple 1 or 0. That's it.

This is how it is:

1) TSpammer targets specific group such as 1-888-874-xxxx
2) TSpammer writes automated and randomized code to send tspam texts either by cluster array (physical or distributed) or by inserting it into a virus of his or her choosing which explains why the phone number and website within the spam no longer exists. The virus is still lingering after the spammers got busted or moved on to another target.

"buying" a phone number list from ANYONE is a sign of a true sucker and unfortunately, spammers are always a step ahead. They aren't suckers. They know that people are generally stupid and will fall for basically everything. They also know that 99% of population will have absolutely no idea how all of this is happening. They know that the blame will be pointed to............cell phone companies. GO FIGURE, EH? WEIRD! It would be MORE work to utilize information such as a friggen phone number list. No one is sitting there typing out emails to send to text recipients. It's a randomized code engineered to cause people to willingly screw themselves and to cause confusion and guess what. It works.  It works people people don't know things.

Stop it. Stop enabling............them :)

Watch Out For Scammers Pretending To Be Your Credit Card Company's Fraud Department

When a strange person calls you on the telephone claiming to represent a company you do business with and asks you to give them sensitive personal information, tell them that you'll call them back on the regular customer service number that you usually use to contact them.

Same, here, I'm from Kalihi and I received a text that told me to call the number immediately regarding a recent restriction on my account.  I thought it was sketchy, because I never had a credit union/bank text message me before. I called it the next day and it told me the number was no longer in service. So I googled the number and found this forum. Thanks for letting me know it was a scam.
