Firefighter's Association-something-or-other.  They usually hang up on me pretty abruptly when I say I'm not interested.  I've asked to be taken off their list before but if what "Annoyed" said about this "line" is what is usually going on, then that would explain why I'm never taken off any of these lists (because these are probably still different companies calling--not that they would take us off anyway!).  I only answer because it looks to be a local number.  Guess I'll just have to let the machine do it for me like usual.  Sigh!  (FYI that I have also checked online before and it seems that even if these calls really are for the firefighters-of-any town, that they hire companies to do the telemarketing for them.  After all, firefighters don't necessarily have time to do crap work like that.)

Got a couple of phone calls from this number.  Caller ID indicated it's from Cordova.  Did some online research to reverse phone call to find out who it is from?  It's likely a telemarketer from somewhere in the United States or from another country that obtained a phone number associated with Memphis phone number area code 901.  The phone number was obtained by a company called Nuvox Communications which now have merged with some other company.  Basically, it's a VOip like Skype Magic Jack or Vonage type of internet phone company that you can buy a phone number associated with any location.  It's not mandatory to reside in the area or state to get a phone number.  As long as you have an internet connection, you can subscribe to a phone number through any internet phone or computer to any country.
Just want to educate people out there that the caller ID's our phone is not always true.  Yup...that's how annoyed I was with this phone call that I had to vent my finding and inform others out there who are not familiar with Internet Phone.

Just got a call from this number. They make sure to be in the process of speaking, or they are having a conversation with someone, but when the answering machine picks up they immediately hang up! Perhaps they want us to call them back, then they know they have a good number.

CID just said 'out of area' although area code is 901 which is our code (in and around Memphis).  Guy just mumbled something and hung up.  That was it, so I'm blocking the number on our phone.

We refer to these guys as the fake firefighters. I checked with WMC and they said these guys aren't on the up and up.
