I got a call from this number yesterday.  They mentioned the name of a friend of mine (with a middle name I had never heard of) and said he had used my name as a reference for a loan.  They said he had not paid the loan back, and that the matter was going to court.  They said I was going  to be sued as well.  I refused to give him any information.  His accent was very thick (Indian? Pakistani?) and I couldn't understand much of what he was saying, not even the name of the company he was representing.  I said I wasn't going to continue the conversation without understanding exactly who was calling and why, and that in fact if it was a legal matter then I would suggest they send me something in writing.  At that point, he simply yelled that I was being sued and would have to meet them in court.  Then he hung up.  Very rude.    My caller ID had shown no number when he left the original message.  I only know the number because he left if on the message machine asking me to call him back.

The numbers they have called me from are 904-201-3839, 646-652-0716, 213-799-0972. They threaten me, call me constantly, and are extremely difficult. Don't make the mistake I did and pay them because they will wait a month and say that you owe more money!

Just an update ...

This is a scam; there is no "US National Bank" or "US Legal Investigators". This is the same group of foreign scammers who use caller ID spoofing software or VoIP to disguise where they're really located. They also use many other fake names such as National Crime Division, Financial Crime Division, United Federal Bank, US Legal Investigation Bureau, Hopkins Law Office and Morgan Associates, just to name a few. They personnel names they use are fake, too.

There are some reports on 800Notes that have suggested that the crooks behind this offshore scam are also the crooks behind the notorious Bass/Ellis Crosby & Assoc./States Predisposition scams. The interesting thing is that the number of complaints on here about the US National Bank/US Legal Investigation scam skyrocketed *after* Florida obtained a $1.3 million judgment against Ted Ellis Crosby, shutdown his operations and barred him from ever conducting debt collections in Florida. (Read http://myfloridalegal.com/newsrel.nsf/newsrel ... 5257424005858A6 )

One thing for everyone to remember is that anytime someone calls you demanding money to prevent your arrest, it is ALWAYS a scam. No debt collector (let alone criminals posing as debt collectors) have the authority to have anyone arrested for anything. (And it's illegal to them to threaten such a thing.) These same scammers also routinely impersonate bankers, lawyers, FBI agents, police and other law enforcement officials, which, obviously, is illegal as well. (Besides, law enforcement officers aren't in the business of debt collection, and debt is a civil matter, not criminal.)

The bottom line is, these are criminals trying to steal your money. I suggest you do all the following (most of which you can do online):

1) The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.

2) Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov  Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone and give them all the details.

3) File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone.  Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.

4) File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.naag.org

5) File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://rn.ftc.gov/pls/dod/wsolcq$.startup?Z_ORG_CODE=PU01

If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)

By the way, here's just a small sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern again and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded false threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:

They are no sooner going to send police to your house than George Bush is likely to be elected to a third term...

It took me a while, but the results are in!!!  The calls are originating from a call center based in either Mumbai or Delhi, India (although the firm also has offices in Ukraine, Macedonia, Indonesia, Guatemala and Taiwan).  The good news - the firm is US based (Florida and NJ).

Please file a complaint with the FTC - the more, the better!  If the calls are reported, these clowns won't be around much longer...

Yep, it's very definitely a scam.  And there's no such thing as a "United States Legal Investigations Bureau". This is just an attempt to impersonate law enforcement personnel, which is also a crime.

This same group of crooks calls under similar false names that are meant to scare their victims into believing they are law enforcement. They threaten their victims with arrest and, sometimes, worse. The bottom line is that no debt collector -- let alone crooks posing as debt collectors -- has the authority to have anyone arrested for anything, and it's illegal for them to threaten otherwise.  Furthermore, whenever someone calls you and threatens to have you arrested if you don't pay them money, it is ALWAYS a scam.

This particular number is a land line in Jacksonville, Florida, which is a notorious hotbed of illegal and fraudulent debt collection activity.

Anyone receiving these calls should report this attempted extortion to the following federal and state law enforcement authorities:

1) The FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov/

2) The Florida Attorney General at http://myfloridalegal.com/contact.nsf/contact?Open&Section=Attorney_General

3) Your state's attorney general, the contact information for each state's attorney general is at www.naag.org

4) Your local police

5) The Federal Trade Commission at https://rn.ftc.gov/pls/dod/wsolcq$.startup?Z_ORG_CODE=PU01
