PLEASE READ: I also received a call from this number, with the caller claiming to work on behalf on Microsoft. The caller asked if I have a computer with  Microsoft Windows and I said it had. The caller stated from their records it shows that my computer has a virus and needed to be fixed, but the only way to fix it, I would just have to give the caller permission to access my computer from where he is. This is called "remote access" After hearing this, I remembered a story on the news I saw about scammers asking the same things, but they were from Nigeria and South Africa. The scammers would gain entry to the victims' computers and steal all of their personal information, for example, PIN numbers for debit, credit cards, banking and financial records, and account info and passwords for online money accounts, like Paypal. This was happening in my area of Halton Region. Anyway, while the caller was still on the line, I started asking him questions. I asked what was his name?  The actual name and phone number where he claimed to work. In a thick accent that isn't custom around here, he said his name was "Joe" and he works with Microsoft at their head office in North Carolina of the United States of the America. "Joe" said he couldn't give me his work number for privacy reasons. I asked him for an agent number, tech number or customer service rep number. Something that his manager or Microsoft could identify him by, then you could hear the nervousness in his voice and then suddenly, his tone and demeanor became aggressive. "Joe" stated he didn't have to give me any of his personal info and I said neither do I. Then I dropped the bombshell telling him about the news story I saw on the news. And the police asked the public to notify them if anyone receives calls from someone claiming to be from Microsoft, saying your computer has a virus, malware or spyware that needs to be fixed. I told "Joe" that I would be calling the police and calling Microsoft and his call was recorded. Joe began swearing & yelling at me and hung up!! After this I googled the phone number for Microsoft's Head Office located in North Carolina where "Joe" said he worked.  I called the number and spoke to the Manager of Customer Service, I told her my story and she stated that she has been receiving calls like mine, quite frequently in the last few months and then before that, it would happen in spurts over the last few years. She stated that to her knowledge, these scams are actually happening to people, mainly those who live in the U.S, but have also been showing up in many countries and now in Canada. The manager claimed the scams originate mostly in South Africa and Nigeria., where the scammers are calling their victims. Most of them lose everything and the police have been in contact with her, but she wouldn't say what the police are doing with the info they receive. The manager said I did the right thing by not giving him any personal info and not allowing him remote access to my computer. By doing so he could have erased, copied, deleted or saved any of your personal files, especially ones containing financial and banking data. She told me to keep spreading the word about these scammers and how to protect yourself.

Called 250-828-1155 in British Columbia.  Number comes up as "unknown - out of area" but asked for their number so I could call back, for 'authenticity'.

He gave me the 905-581-1797, so hung up and called number to get the same person.  Then reported the number to SILK - scam information line Kamloops through the RCMP.

They keep calling.

I got the same call (they actually called both my phones at the same time, which was the first red flag).  I asked them a tonne of questions and googled their request while on the phone.  I put him on hold and when returned called him on the scam.  Advised I was in contact with Microsoft and his response was that he was not from Microsoft, rather, Windows Servicing department (second red flag).  He denied selling anything, but wanted to walk me through looking into my computer to show me how much spam my computer was receiving.  His name was Mark Watson (did not match the accent..third red flag).  He provided me with the above number and told me his supervisors name was William Jones.  Please do not fall for this scam, it sounds like there are a few who have. Please educate your friends (facebook is a good medium), your parents and children!  No legitimate company will ever ask you for personal information over the phone or email or ask you to go into your computer and enter commands.

Was entertaining. The phone number seems to be connected to http://globalsupportpc.com/Canada/avsoftware.aspx

Message from 905-581-1797 ...heavy accent...said there was a PC problem.  M.I. Law answered it (84) and said she didn't look after the PC, could they leave a number to call...They did, but when I checked it out here I learned it was a scam.

They say all operators are busy and to hold because that's what they want you to do...Keep you on as long as possible while they rack up the bucks!  Your phone bill is where it will show up.

This was the most hilarious tlemarketing call I've had.  The fellow identified himself as "Ralph Kramer" (I even clarified the spelling), although it was probably Raj Kumar, judging by the accent.

He gave me the "your computer could crash at any minute".  It sounded like he was being coached by someone in the background, and there were a lot of other voices.

When I asked where he was, he said Ontario.  I asked where in Ontario and he became totally confused.  When I asked what city in Ontario (maybe he doesn't know Ontario is a Province) he offered me the phone number.  I asked a couple more questions, and he got angry, saying that I was interogating him like he was a "suspect in a murder investigation!"  At that, I burst out laughing, and wrote his number down, again confirming his name and the spelling.

I'm still laughing, but I think I will also report it.

Man calls indicating my computer has been reporting errors and warnings to Windows. He asks me to check my home computer. I tell him he clearly cannot know or he would know we had more than one. I end up checking one and he has a number that matches something on the screen on mine. I have to find this by using the -run- function then entering the word "assoc". Then he tells me to go to a screen to manage the computer and find applications with errors and warnings - using this as evidence that someone has been slowly eroding my firewall and will soon gain access to all my information. He wants to transfer me to a person who can log into my computer and fix all this for me. www.support.me

This is where I want his number to call him back. I get the same "com-x" auto-answer and am put on hold. Finally some woman answers with a "hello". Clearly, not exactly windows protocol. Then my friend miraculously calls me back somehow knowing that I just called. I then went to microsoft to ask them and you can't call them unless you pay a $59 fee (nice security support). I did find this website and information, however. Clearly a scam.

Microsoft does not make unsolicited phone calls to help you fix your computer

In this scam cybercriminals call you and claim to be from Microsoft Tech Support. They offer to help solve your computer problems. Once the crooks have gained your trust, they attempt to steal from you and damage your computer with malicious software including viruses and spyware.

Although law enforcement can trace phone numbers, perpetrators often use pay phones, disposable cellular phones, or stolen cellular phone numbers. It's better to avoid being conned rather than try to repair the damage afterwards.

Treat all unsolicited phone calls with skepticism. Do not provide any personal information.

If you receive an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft Tech Support, hang up. We do not make these kinds of calls.

I have been getting calls for a while. Finally on Friday they got my daughter and she did everything they said and they told her all the "problems" with the computer. They also told her they needed a credit card number so she phoned me and I told her I was not giving them my number. She closed everything and shut off the computer. I took it to the tech today.  I really hope they didn't get any info or was not able to do anything to my computer. Hopefully the tech can get everything fixed, if possible. Here's hoping!

Yes. Same experience as all you above. For try I called this number. They said that I connected connex (maybe ConX), please wait etc, etc.
What rang the bell is that I had trouble with my Tomcat (start, stop, restart). It was an issue (minor) with Tomcat itself so nothing to hurt my computer. Nothing malicious but Error was recorded. So he told ma that it can hurt my computer and was talking about hijakers, private files, personal security etc, etc (simple process to scary people) and the best way is to talk with technician who will fix everything. He wanted to acess my computer. It was too fast. Rememeber - do not give access to your computer if you are not 1000% sure. I had issue with my Dell. I called Dell support. The guy solved everyting simply telling me what to do, what to download etc, etc. One thing he asked was my tag number to verify that I'm under guarantee. When I suggested that maybe it will be faster if he can access my computer he said "No way".
One more thing. I'm working with computers for over 30 years. So I know when I'm in trouble.
Remember - be sure 1000% which basically means never. I believe only staff from my company.

The bottom line is that maybe this company is honest and want to help us? Up to you to make a try.

They called me this morning with the same story.  The first thing that struck me as odd was that they referred to me by my maden name which was changed 2 years ago and before I bought this computer.  I asked what their prompts would do, they couln't tell me (what kind of IT person can't tell me what will happen was my first thought). I ended up thanking them for the notification taking names and numbers and saying I would get someone local to take care of it for me.

A few hours later, they called again! I asked why I was getting a second call in the same day "So sorry" click.

Peter called from an unknown number to say there was significant data error messages being sent to head office of Windows (I think he meant to say Microsoft, but didn't).  I'm visiting my boyfriends parents who are seniors.  I'm grateful they asked me to come and take the phone call.  I asked why I was being asked to follow the prompts he was giving.  Jotted down some notes, and then asked if I could call him back.  I was given numbers in this order (which sort of made me laugh)  190-558-117-97 .  I asked to clarify and he told me "it's an Ontario number".  Okay! And certainly if we put the spaces in the right space, it is  1-905-581-1797

Here are the requests he made:

click on the windows button on the keyboard and type the letter R at the same time (this opens RUN in Windows).
Then he asked me to type in these letters

eventvwr

Which ultimately runs "event viewer".  In itself, nothing dangerous.  I don't know where he was going to go next however.

He had also mentioned they were very concerned, because over the past month this computer had been sending high volume of "error messages" to the head office of Windows.

I'd say "beware"

When we called this number back the line rang at least 15 times before being routed to an automated attentant.  The message said, "Than you for calling Conx Communications. No one is available to take your call at the present time.  Please hold" (or similar)  It might have been "Connex Communication" or something similar.

Suspect Phishing.  Best of luck!
