If they are a "security company" as reported by Steve above and they want to hang a sign in your yard, it's a home-alarm sales call offering a "free" alarm system if you will only let them install a company sign on your property in a location that's visible from the road. Beware of horrible home alarm contracts and practices which may include:
1. they tell you it's a 2-year contract but it's really 5 years in the fine print
2. there may be a hidden installation charge and other hidden fees
3. they tell you it's a free system so you think you get to keep it after the contract expires (false!)
4. they won't tell you you're really renting the system with rental charges waived in the contract
5. when the contract runs out, they make it hard to return the system and hit you with rental fees
6. you may need to pay someone to remove it from your home
7. you may be charged for "damaged" parts after you return them
