The same thing happened to me. I saved the messages to show the police, and went to the station to file a report. They said I had to come back the next day to pick it up, and bring it to the courthouse. The clerk would print up a summons to send to the caller's phone company to ask that they send me the caller's name and address. Then I could summons him and bring him up on charges.
You also should call the police if this person approaches you or threatens you physically. As much as you dislike receiving messages from this person, save every one for the police. They will be used as evidence against him, and every one he sends you will get him in more and more trouble.
