SCAM ! I rec'd a message on my landline answering machine from this number. The woman knew my name and gave another number for me to phone back and an account number that was at least 20 digits long to be used. I phoned my local Penney's and they verified there was no order in my name.

The caller ID said JC Penney Co I.

They called my cell number and knew my name and address.  The lady stated that she was from JC Penny and that I was trying to place an order for a gift card for $250 using my American Express.  I told her that I did not place a gift card order at all, and further, I do not own an American Express.  She said, "It is cancelled." Then she just hung up on me when I was clearly upset and wanting to see what was going on.  I called JC Penny and they said that the order was there, and it was cancelled.  

This # called my cell and said that they were JC Penny and I had placed a $250 gift card order with my American Express. I did not place this order nor do I have an American Express.

Got the same sort of call, wanting to verify something from JC Penney that I didn't order.  When I said I didn't have a JCP card they gave me the last four digits of my Visa and I told them it was cancelled.  Also have no idea where they got my cell number.  They're getting so sophisticated.  Agree, scam, scam scam.

I received a call wanting the "customer id" on the back of my debit card after ordering a gift ecard online. I asked if she needed the 3 digit code and she said no then got rude about it so I hung up & blocked the number. I received a confirmation hours earlier via email that everything was fine & even got the email with the ecard. Guess I'll call

Called my cell # which hardly anyone has and hung up, then immediately called my home # saying to call them back. This is the message. "This is JC Penny regarding your order call us at 866-831-1528 hours are Monday through Friday seven am Until 8:30 PM Central and Saturday Sunday nine am till 5:30 PM Central Thank you for shopping JC Penny."

First I have not ordered anything from JCP, second the acutal jcp # is 18003221189. SCAM SCAM SCAM

Stated that the gift card i used was not valud and they needed another credit card. Why would i do that if the store had already called three days ago to tell me my order was in.

I got a call from this number today and I wasn't able to answer at the time.  I didn't recognize the number, so I always search online for others that have received calls too from these numbers.  It does come back to jcp so I called them and the lady said that they do not have any reason to call me for anything.  It's suspicious!!!  Some unknown persons may possibly have software that disguises their number and are making these calls to phish for information.  Beware.

J C Penney called to verify a online purchase. I told them no, they said to call American Express and stop my card. I called American Express, they said there was no charge from J C Penney. They suggested monitoring my card activity for a while.  They also said J C Penney would never call you regarding an American Express purchase, American Express would.

They say they are JCP and are calling about an order I placed. Problem... I don't order anything from them. I don't have a credit card with them. The closest one is 90 miles from my house. I didn't order anything online either. The only other people in this house are my children, who didn't order anything from them either. How they got my PRIVATE number is beyond me.

Yup same happened to me, called someone was using my card to place a gift card order, just fraud alerted my bank and gave them the story and cancelled my card.

Yes, it is JC Penny. The "mystery" call was due to an order placed by another household member. The call was to advise the order had arrived.

Penny's used the primary "Penny's Card" holder's name, address, etc. The acceptability of the info was agreed to by the buyer at the time of order. One has to assume the person placing the order is paying close attention to the name & address the cashier is verifying.

I know as I had forgotten I had placed the order and the wife was bewildered as to the call as she had not ordered anything.

In any case, J.C. Penny's is not the usual "tele-pest".

There's always a shill on these sites trying claim these numbers really are what they say, but why would JC Penny or, in other, similar cases, Old Navy be calling about an order when you haven't placed an order.  Nice try, but nobody is buying it.

I too received a call that was identified as "Kansas." If this is JC Penney, why was no message left on voicemail? Suspicious.
