Get a phone that has programmable ring tones. Set the default to none or no ring. Go back & set a ringer for only numbers you want to answer. When they come in, jus block them as you go. A lot of the new phones have unlimited blocking (Panasonic, etc). Most lagitimate callers will leave a message.

Portfolio Recovery Associates starting to re-using prior unlisted numbers again.  This number first used in 2011.  Only valid physical address from this collection agency is located in the state of Virginia at the following address:

I use a DIGITONE CALL BLOCKER to block all unwanted callers from ringing my phone, this this device used in line to your phone. Just like a external caller ID box.  This unit can block any number up to all 10 digits or by area code only.  Best investment i ever made to finaly put a stop to any unwanted caller from ever ringing my phone again.  It notes the caller ID information but totally blocks the call from ringing your phone. you can program it to block the call totally or allow your voice machine to answer.

Have at it - I never hear your call ringing my phone.  I have no debt of any kind, but this bad debt collector's don't care.

This is Portfolio Recovery and from what I have researched it is a debt collector. They call approximately 5 times a day from phone numbers all over the US, They never leave a message to explain why they are calling or even who they are, or who they want to speak to.  I refuse to answer these phone calls.

This company has been calling me for years for a debt I paid off.  I have sent them a certified letter asking for proof of the loan which they could not provide but continue to call.  The information was submitted to the credit bureau. I have gotten a lawyer.

Just as I suspected, yet another phone number from Portfolio Recovery.  The Caller ID said "Unknown Name".  No message of course.

I can block numbers, but only 10 and only within "my service area".  I don't have this fancy stuff other people seem to have, like Google Voice or something.  I don't even know what that is.  I guess I have an "analog" phone connection.

I agree with the poster above who used the phone no. as name.  Legit companies will leave a legit message.  The Caller ID should have their co. name, or at least a valid working phone number.  I've seen posts from people saying this co. will display a disconnected # sometimes.

I'm also getting calls from some "Unknown Caller" (no number shown) repeatedly.  No message.  I strong suspect it's them.

Anyway, I've been getting calls from this company for almost 2 years, looking for someone else.  Other agencies have called but gave up after a few weeks or months.  But not PF.  What kind of way is that to do business?  Calling and calling a number that never gets answered by a live person.  Sometimes I wonder if they even know how many times they have called a number OR if they know what numbers they are calling.

I've had my number over 10 years, by the way.  They keep calling and I keep not answering.  When possible, I hang up on them.  That's what they will do on my machine anyway.  I still look up these numbers, even if I never pick up.

Hello Melissa,
I thought you might be interested to know that I set up a Google Voice account about three years ago. I ported my home number in (to be my Google Voice number), and I have two unregistered, prepaid, cell phone numbers that Google Voice forwards the calls to. The one feature that I love the most is that an unlimited amount of telephone numbers can be blocked. Now if a strange telephone number calls and does not leave a message, I research the number. If I can not find out who owns the number (without paying for the information) it gets blocked. I can't even remember how many numbers I have blocked over the years. Keep up the good work!

I don't know about anyone else, but if any business, legitimate or otherwise, calls me and does not leave a message, you can be certain of two things (as far as I am concerned):
1. They are not acting in a professional manner
2. They will not get a return call.

Prank Call
This is interesting -- ten pages of comments on 899 notes for this number, and the latest one before today was from Mach of 2012. Now, a year and four months later, here comes Portfoolio, no message, and violating the rule the state attorney general's office gave them years ago, to identify themselves by name in the caller ID. This one says UNKNOWN. I think the bottom-feeding vermin may be losing it. Sober up, Portfoolio Recovery experts.

Best thing to do if you can is to sign up for google voice and link it to your cell (not sure if you can from a home phone) You can block their calls in google voice to where it just goes to "im sorry the number that you are trying to reach is no longer in service"
For those with home phones I don't know if they can still block numbers? I know they used to be able too but it was for a small price per month..
These companies are relentless and don't care what time they call (6am call this past sunday)
Im now divorced and getting calls for the ex not my debit his! They didn't understand he is not at this number so i just BLOCKED them (and thanks to the first post i have them all blocked now)

Personally, I just utilize Google Voice. Calls in the call log can be marked as SPAM which will never ring the phones. I then have a old smart phone that is used as a wifi phone. I then add aFirewall which can go even more such as Anonymous Call Rejection.

If you wanted to use this solution, you would have to get a second line with AT&T, and port the current number to Google Voice. This way, everything is somewhat transparent. A wifi phone option is not available to you since you are probably not using SIP. However, Archos should hopefully be releasing an Android based DECT phone. A little initial hoop jumping should get everything running.

Debt Collector
I've found that this place is located in Norfolk, Va. They buy up old debts (pennies on the dollar),even those that were filed in Bankruptcy courts. And they try to collect the money. On their website they claim that Forbes Magazine and others that they are an accredited small business.
On the BBB they have had 989 complaints filed against them in the last three (3) years & 443 were half resolved in the last 12 months. How they can have an A+ rating with the BBB with that many complaints is beyond me. But maybe Virginia looks at businesses differently than everyone else does.
Any company that has to keep changing their phone number to make harassing phone calls on debts that they know they can't collect legally, is a business that is another scam outfit looking to make a fast buck. And this being tax refund season, they are looking to collect some of that refund money for themselves.
Congress stopped on the most part the Payday Loan places, so why can't they stop these people.
But for everyone's info if they call you & refuse to listen when you tell them that you don't owe this money or that the person they are looking for is not at your phone number - report them to the FTC & the FCC. Either government agency gets enough complaints against a company they can pull their business license permanently. Of course, that doesn't mean that can't open up shop under a different name but it should slow them down enough that they start losing money & then they become a no-profit business!

Send your complaints to the FTC at the website I  listed above. I just did this and they give you a reference number and a phone number to call if you need to add more information in you complaint. The more complaints filed with the FTC the better. Maybe we can get them shut down. The company I'm referring to is PORTFOLIO RECOVERY

This company has been calling me over and over and when I'd answer, they would hang up. I got a call tonight , third one of the day and then I called them back.A woman answered and couldn't answer my questions. I told her I was contacting the FTC and suing them for harassment. She then let me speak to her manager, Jack Morris. I repeated my complaint and that I would sue them if they kept it up. He told me they were a collection agency and I told him I had no outstanding debts. He got loud and beligerent with me. He said I was threatening him. He then asked me if I knew two people who's name was on the account. I told him no. He then said that he would remove my name. It's now 10 minutes later and guess who I just got a phone call from. This same company. I asked the woman that called to let me speak to Jack Morris and she said she could not connect me to this person at this time. I told her I had just spoken to him and he said he had removed my number. She said that another debt had just come across her desk for these people. I asked to speak to a manager. This time I talked to a Shawn Rock, sounds like a made up name, but he said he was not a manager. Again. we went over the same thing. He said it would take up to 7 days to remove my number and that I could expect more calls from them. So save your breath and just notify the FTC about the harassment.

caller ID says Portfoliorecon.  They keep calling my unlisted Fax # - DUH.  They have been calling almost everyday for over a month, what a nuance. I hate these people, whoever they are.

INTERESTING TO NOTE - I've noticed that I always get another call exactly 30 minutes before they call and caller ID says PRIVATE CALLER.  Not sure what that's all about, but it doubles my spam calls. Surely it's the same company testing if I'm dumb enough to answer a PRIVATE CALLER call.  NOT!

Wish these people would go away and stop calling my fax#.
