They called from the "State Attorneys Office".  Heavy accent and all.  They called me 3 times on cell and 8 times at work.  When I finally spoke to someone I flipped the script and asked them for their Supervisors name, phone and title.  They are all supposed to be attorney's and I live in California so I promptly checked the Bar Association website and guess what??? Could not find them anywhere.  He got frustrated, cussed me out and hung up.  Don't give them any info, just report them immediately and block them if you can.

I am in the same situation as most of the people hear. The Indian that called stated he was from the state attorney's office here in the state of California. He threatened me with arrest but could not tell me what for. this is a big time scam and I believe that these people are not based here in California even though they have numbers from this state. I believe these people are based in India and not here in the US.

I got a call from this number, missed it however called the next day and it started by saying the call was being recorded and it was not mlm or network marketing type thing. Then went on with some lady's story of bad her life was trying to make money from home till she got a call like this one. She was speaking for herself also even said she made 20k in the first 5 days. After that and immediately after that the call ends. I know this is total b***s*** but this number seems to be a mask number as I did not get any debt collector call, or maybe because I didn't answer when the number first called me. What should I do about this, police only catch potheads and what can FTC or the other recommend groups do about it???

If you paid with credit card or debit card, call your financial institution immediately and have the payment stopped!  File a dispute for fraud.  Have your bank place fraud alerts on all your accounts.  Also, if the callers have your SSN, you should definitely alert at least one of the three credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) and have them place fraud alerts as well.  You may want to look at identity theft protection too.

Unfortunately, if you paid via Western Union or prepaid card, you're out of luck.  You should never pay any caller unless they mail you proof of debt/proof they can legally collect said debt.  Refusal to mail this documentation within five days of their first call is a violation of federal law.  Please do report your callers to the FTC, FBI and your state's Attorney General.

The most you can do is file a complaint with the FTC. I would also contact your bank regading any payments made.  See if they can reverse the payment somehow.  Not sure if this can be done, but it is definately worth a try.  I would also have your bank put a "block" on this compnay being able to come into your account again.  They now have your banking information and can clean you out!  I would act immediately on this.

Update:  I received another call again from Mr Gabriel just now, and I said "I spoke to you earlier".  He said "What are you going to do"??  I told him that after we hung up, I contacted Cash Advance, and they are looking into this.  He hung up quickly!

And Mike Freeman:  The most you can do is file a complaint with the FTC. Debt Collector
I received calls to my cell phone and place of employment today from Brandon Gabriel.  He stated he was calling regarding a loan with Cash America.  Well, since I never had a loan with Cash America, I immediately contacted Cash America and left a voice mail and sent an email to them regarding this matter.

This is definatly a fraudulant call as a true creditor would not use threats of arrest at the place of employment, criminal charges, bank fraud etc.,  True creditors know the laws.  Plus, this Brandon Gabriel was unable to gie me any details regarding this so called loan I received.  (no dates, no addresses, etc.,).  He just kept insisting I pay him via my check/debit card TODAY to avoid further actions against me.

So, if you receive a call from this company, just get as much information as you can.  (names, phone numbers, any type of account #'s) if possible.  JUST YES THEM TO DEATH UNTIL YOU CAN GET ALL THE INFORMATION YOU CAN GET AS YOU WILL NEED AS MUCH INFORMATION AS POSSIBLE TO FILE A COMPLAINT.   BUT DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY MONEY OR ANY OF YOUR BANKING INFORMATION.  Do not curse and yell at them, as they realize that you are upset and will continue with calls to your phone and place of employment.  Then, hang up, contact Cash America (or whoever they are saying they are representing)  via phone and email with your complaint and file a complaint with the FTC.

Also, if they are calling your place of employment, it is imperative that you advise your supervisor as to what is going on and print out items online, showing this is a fraud, and your are a case of identity theft.

This number called three times at my work claiming they were the attorney general's office regarding a debt.  I did not get any other information, but they tried to talk to my supervisor.  The name I was given for the attorney was George Belowski.  The caller had a very strong foreign accent.

Foreign scammers - they call people and threaten them with charges, arrest, and even jail to scare them into paying bogus debts.  First of all, debt is civil, not criminal, so defaulting on a loan is not fraud. Secondly, if you were going to be arrested, you don't get a phone call to give you a heads up.  Good for you for not falling for it!  Please do report your callers to the FTC and your state's Attorney General.

They called me, said they were the attorney generals office and I was under indictment for bank fraud for an online loan, and that the sheriff's department was coming to arrest me at my home or at work. Called them back and called them out as scammers, asked them a few questions and they said we can not answer these questions. They hung up,
