I am so glad for this forum. I was truly scared. I called the Sheriffs office and the police department and they were very nice and said that they don't do those types of arrest and they are using a bully tactic.

Once I told them the above, and I told them I want to settle it, like I originally have been planning on to...to send me in writing what I am liable for...he then said "well...Im sending the police right now...good luck" and hung up.

So awful!! Not even the IRS does these kinds of tactics!!!!

Prank Call
I recieved over 15 calls from this phone number on my cell number. I blocked it. Now this person is calling my place of work. I know he is a fraud. I told him I was online looking at the number and hundreds of complaints due to him being a fraud. When I told him not to call my work any more or I would call police he stated very coldly call them you Bit@#, he then proceeded to call me some very nasty names which I wont repeat. I then told him to stop calling me, he would get no money from me. He hung up. I have notified my co workers to not accept his call if he calls again.
This is a fraud, they got our phone numbers from online whether shopping or applying for loans/payday loans. DO NOT MAIL OR SEND HIM MONEY!!! If you were being truly sued, you would be served legal documents. A NON-AMERICAN would not call you demanding money or stating police would be coming to your home.

Hi
I just got a call from a payday loan I still have outstanding (dont judge I really needed it and BARELY getting back on track and will pay soon) and all of the comments above are EXACTLY what I just went through. I was really scared...I even called the Sherrifs office out of curiousity and the officer said that they don't do that, I am not going to be arrested. Its a bully tactic and to just pay my loan back. So terrifying!!

I received a call today on my work cell number from a John McCarthy, Paralegal working in Attorney Frank Morrell's office.  He informed me that there was a law suite made against me in my name and SS#.  The guy had a strong foreign accent.  He put me on hold to put the lead attorney on the phone.  When he came back on the phone, it sounded like the same guy!  I kept asking what the lawsuit was about and why I'm getting a phone call on my work cell rather than documentation at my address or service by a processor.  I guess I asked too many questions and the guy hung up on me.

I receive several calls a day from this number and they always leave a voice mail. This guy says he needs me or my attorney to call it's a very important message for me. He say's his name is Brian Anderson and that he's calling from the California State Attorney's Office. Come on people with that strong of an accent it's a major SCAM!!! It's the holiday season not to mention people are scandalous these days especially people from foreign counties. That's how they make a living is by scamming people. Yes they may have the address for the California State Attorney's Office, but anyone can Google information to try to scare you. Don't answer your phone to these idiots the more you answer the more they will call. Even a professional bill collector doesn't act like this, because it is against the law to threaten anyone in any kind of way. Have you heard of Magic Jack and all these phone apps that you can use to make free calls and even pick your own number. Be careful is all I'm saying.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:

I received a call from a overseas sounding man claiming to be Mark Foster ugh yeah with a accent like that I highly doubt it, he called from 916-259-3085 the new problem is that these scammers can now get any fake number their claiming their calling from to show up on your phone and he claimed he was calling from the Attorneys General office yeah and I just saw a UFO just the other day anyways don't pay if they won't send you anything in writing. And it's against the FTC and FCTRA for them to be threatening you with any action they do not intend to pursue.

Do not give them any information.  They may have your personal information from on-line applications and websites, but they are in no way legitimate.  You will read your same story from a lot of people on line, and they call from a lot of different numbers.  Their is a common thread.  They all have heavy mideastern accents and names like Joe Smith and David Harris.  I have received these several times, it is very frustrating to think that someone must be paying them over the phone because they would not continue this scam if they were not making money.  It is smply that some people are not familiar with legal processes and they prey on them.

This is a scam, I received about 15-20 calls a day last week from these fraudulant numbers and did not answer.  This morning I decided to answer and collect all of the information and report it.  But when I received a call at 7am it was so ridiculous I couldn't go along.  It was a person with a heavy mid-easter accent saying he is from the Attorney Generals office and that serious charges were against me regarding money I owe.  I replied that it was 7:00 in the morning and the Attorney General's office would not be calling someone at that time of day, nor would they be breaking the law regarding collections activity by calling that early, this is B...S..., you are pathetic; And hung up.  LOL This crook called right back to say, I have your adress ..........., and I am dispatching officers (Attorney General does not dispactch police, that is an ignorant statement to make) to arrest you right now.  I said send them on over I will be waiting at the front door just do not call me again.

By the way, I called the Attorney General's office and they advised me to report it to my local police.  It's frustrating because I know that nothing will be done, and I cannot block them on my cell phone, the numbers change every day.

I got the same calls today.  I blocked the number with my caller ID device and he kept calling about twenty times.  Phone only rings once and then automatically hangs up on him.  He then started calling my cell phone.  I blocked him on that number also.  I reported the calls to the FTC.  Everyone needs to report these calls.  Some older person or naive person is going to or has given them money and that is why they keep calling.  Today he said he was from the U.S. Attorney General's Office. Since when does the Attorney General have a call center that you can hear in the back ground??

I am NOT a criminal! They said that they were going to my job and I was going to get arrested today for 9 months and be without a job for 5 years via I cannot become employed by NO ONE.

I got the very same call yesterday! The called me at work (from 916-259-3085 and 916-469-1761) and gave me personal information that made me take notice. They even spoofed an authentic Sheriff station number. They wanted me to settle the case out of court for $2500 with specific denominations on green dot cards. I received calls in tandem from the fake attorney and a fake police officer. When pressed for a case number and other information they become more forceful and continued making threats about jail time. I made a report with the REAL Attorney General's Office and local law enforcement in addition I contacted green dot and the three credit bureaus.

Do NOT give these people any of your information! They call saying they are from the attorney general's office and that you have a lawsuit or a judgement against you. They have heavy accents and are obviously at a call center. They even had my Social security number.   IT IS A SCAM.  I verified that with the actual attorney general's office.

similar to posts below, middle eastern accent stated his name was Paul Walker, he left messages on my cell phone number and just now called my office at work. Stating i had a pending legal matter and needed me or my attorney to call back immediately or suffer the consequences. He had the last four digits of my SS#. I recently inquired online about payday type loans, which required I enter this information. This is where I feel my information was scammed from. After inquiring at only one website I received dozens of offers from many other sites trying to sell me an outrageously expensive loan, it seems my information was shared all over the place. BEWARE.

A Collection Agent May Not?

Here are the top 11 actions prohibited by the The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act:

Misrepresent Him or Herself

A debt collector may not misrepresent himself as an attorney or law enforcement officer.

Use the Telephone to Annoy or Harass

A collection agent may not cause a telephone to ring or engage any person in telephone conversation repeatedly or continuously with an intent to annoy, abuse, or harass anyone at the called number.

Threaten Arrest or Lawsuit

A collection agent may not threaten a consumer with arrest. It may not threaten legal action that is either not permitted or not actually contemplated. In other words, a the threat of a lawsuit may be an empty one.

Use Abusive or Threatening Language

A debt collector may no use abusive or profane language in the course of communication related to the debt.

Publish a Bad Debt List

Publishing the consumer?s name or address on a "bad debt" list is prohibited.

Contact By Embarrassing Media

A debt collector may not communicate with a consumer by post card. It may not use any language or symbol, other than the debt collector?s address, on any envelope when communicating with a consumer by use of the mails or by telegram. A debt collector may use its business name if such name does not indicate it is in the debt collection business.

Contact a Consumer at Work

A collection agent may not communicate with consumers at their place of employment after being told this is unacceptable or prohibited by the employer.

Seek Unjustifiable Amounts

A debt collector may not demand any amounts not permitted under an applicable contract or as provided under law.

Contact a Consumer Represented by an Attorney

A collection agent may not contact a consumer after it learns the consumer is represented by a lawyer.

Communicate With a Consumer After Receiving a Validation Request

If a consumer sends a written §1692g response within 30 days, the collection agent may not communicate with the consumer until it mails the consumer the requested verification of original creditor's name and address.

Communicate With Third Parties

A debt collector may not reveal or discuss the nature of a consumer?s debts with third parties other than the consumer?s spouse or attorney. A collection agent may contact neighbors or co-workers only to obtain location information. It may contact a third party again if it has reason to believe the information the party provided previously is false.

Bills.com FDCPA FAQ

Below are questions Bills.com readers ask frequently:

Can a Collection Agent Call My Cell Phone?

Yes. However, if you tell the debt collector it may not use that number because it is a cell phone, it may not contact you again at that number.

I Keep Receiving Dozens of Calls From Collection Agents. Is That Legal?

No. Unscrupulous collection agents will use "block parties" or "office parties" where they contact a consumer, multiple neighbors, or co-workers telling them they need to reach the consumer on an urgent matter. This is not permitted under the FDCPA.

A Collector Says I Will Be Arrested if I Do Not Pay

This was a true statement before the US Civil War, but has not been true since. People may be arrested if an aggressive judge files a bench warrant for a person who does not appear at a hearing relating to a lawsuit regarding a debt. However, in that case, the offense is the failure to respond to a court order, and not the existence of the debt. As stated above, it is illegal under the FDCPA to threaten a consumer with arrest if the consumer does not pay the debt.

I received a voicemail from 916-259-3085 yesterday. Individual had some Middle East accent and said he was from District Attorney's office. English was very poor, identified himself as "Roy Miller" and said I must contact him immediately about a grave matter involving "fraud with my social security number." He had the last four digits of my SSN. Went on to say if I didn't immediately return his call, he knew where I worked and would serve warrants at my workplace and home. His lack of professionalism and use of the English language is laughable, but the fact he has my last 4 SSN digits is bothersome. I have reported this to FTC.
