I live 3000 miles away from this turd of a state. Never lived there nor worked there. My phone area code is in the state I live in and I get a call! There is no way in hell I owe taxes there. Blocked the number. If this is real, they have issues. It is California after all.

Foreign accent, could hardly understand her and first words out of her mouth was 'What is Your Soc Sec #'.
I said "I dont think so" said she was CA FTB
I told her if she was from them then she would have it already.

I am looking at it as an error on their automated dialing machine.  I called FTB, verified about the call, told them I do not owe anything.  The guy looked it up using my phone number only, and their system is not giving him any info whatsoever. He said that just by inputting one's mobile number, they would immediately get an info from their system, however when he inputs mine, nothing appears.  So he is thinking that this is an auto dialer error.  He also told me that it doesnt mean that when you get a call from them, that you owe FTB.  For some reason there are some, like me, who just switched mobile number lately, and most likely the number that I have now is associated with someone who owes FTB.  He said I do not have to worry and he was apologetic.  Now I understand why my husband is telling me that it is not good for some mobile carriers to recycle mobile numbers.

I also got a message from 916-845-2058.  A man voice said that I owe Franchise Tax Board like your case.  In fact I have not owed FTB  anything.  It's so weir!

This is not a scam it is the Franchise Tax Board..

It was California Franchise Tax Board.  Sadly, I owe them money.  Boo hoo

If this really is the State of California Franchise Tax Board -- then why did they try to call me -- and left no message?  State tax is automatically taken out of our pay and they always owe us -- we haven't owed them in decades!  So I'm siding with the people who think this is a scam.  And this number:  916-845-2058 -- is not listed on the State's webpage stating that there will be automated calls.  Scammers can add some notes to 800notes as well.  So be wary about this phone number!

Sacramento ? Franchise Tax Board (FTB) is implementing an automated dialer for outbound collection calls to contact personal income tax (PIT) and business entity (BE) taxpayers in an effort to prevent collection actions such as tax liens, bank levies, and wage garnishments.

This new customer service effort allows FTB to contact more taxpayers and provide them options to resolve their outstanding tax liabilities before collection actions take place.

Taxpayers who received a final collection notice and did not respond within the given timeframe may receive a call with a broadcast message. The message guides taxpayers to resolve their cases through FTB?s web and Interactive Voice Response (IVR) self-service options.  Callers to the IVR have the option of transferring to an FTB collector who will work with them to resolve their case through several payment options.

Taxpayers already in our collections process may receive calls from our automated dialer. The automated dialer calls the taxpayer and, if the call is answered, connects them to an FTB collector who will work with them to resolve their case through several payment options. If the dialer doesn?t connect with a taxpayer, it leaves the same broadcast message as taxpayers with a final collection notice.

Received a call from a Black female stating she was the State of California Tax Board and wanted information such as my name and Social Security Number.  I told her if she was from the State Tax Board she should have all that information on her data-base.  She was persistent and I told her to pound a large pile of sand.  She was upset and hung up.  Another scam as far as I am concern.

BTW. California tax should send you a letter. Not call you.

This is a valid caller. The reason you can't call them back is because it's an automated system. It is really the State of California Franchise Tax Board. They've left a valid number to call (888 895-8125). In my case, there was no issue other than someone else had given my phone number. They unattached that other person from my phone number.

Total SCAMMERS!  They called my new GOOGLE VOICE NUMBER that I had literally for 15 miinutes!  My regular cell number is out of state, when I got my google voice number for a 619 area code I get these DB's calling!  They are scammers, do not call them back!, block the number if you can, they just keep calling over and over and over and over!

My elderly father rec'd 3 calls from this nbr today. Hmm, no one even has his nbr but my brother and me!

I got a call from this piece of s!@$t  scammer/social engineer saying I owe the CA tax board money. I called the number back and it's busy, no surprise it's a scam.

I received 4 calls today from this number 916 845 2058

California franchise collections robot call..not sure if its third party or not...

Same here keep getting calls.
