I recieved the summons about a week later never went to court.

If the NY Bar said it's a scam - I would listen to them.  The loan was paid off, your cousin has proof and the fake attorney calling is refusing to give the name of the company.  Bottom line - if she won't prove your cousin owes the loan (which she can't), then your cousin and you can ignore the calls.  Report to the FTC and your state's Attorney General.  BTW, "Brooke Manning" is in violation of the law if she is representing herself as an attorney and she isn't - which the NY Bar has already confirmed.

I do hope you made her send the debt validation letter.  Also you wouldn't receive a wage garnishment without receiving a summons to go to court first.

I actually got a call from her back in january and it was in ref to a wage garnishment which I am being garnished for an old credit card I am unsure about the county thing... Shes a real bi*** but its a lawfirm that handles debt and bad checks..

This one is super creepy... Caller ID is 917-668-0381. Woman giving name as Brooke Manning, says it is a law office. No atty in NY state by that name. NY Bar says it is a scam. They left a message for my cousin at an old work saying it was about her daughter's health and it was in Washington County. Then when my cousin called back it the lady said she was filing charges of fraud against her for some loan. My cousin told her the loan was paid off. She printed proof. The woman refuses to give the company name (which collection agencies are required to do if asked). NY Bar suggested contacting FTC, but if they are getting calls about this all the time clearly it isn't stopping these people. The fact they were able to get the information they did is very scary... I called the number to try to find out who it was and she asked the number dialed. I gave a fax # no one has (so they didn't start calling me) and she said they were trying to reach my cousin. How do they get her name from the number I gave when no one knows that number besides me and my ex-husband? We don't give it out. It is a recently gotten internet based phone line. Tell me that is not scary...
