The off-shore company whose number is: 800-993-8762, is a 3rd party employed by Hire Right. Hire Right contracts out employee verification, ideally when an applicant is applying for a new job. This doesn't also mean a person might not experience the sort of interaction in your description- though, I might challenge it was not in fact the student employee's personal info being asked for, but yours. TRY to consider people in third world countries are working for deplorable wages doing this sort of work too, in order to provide for their own lives and families, as well. Everywhere in this world, people are working to make a living. All human beings are members of the same human family working hard to make a decent living as much as is possible, no matter the cultural, political, economic or national infrastructure differences/disparities. Think beyond reactionism.

Seems to be a major scam. Received three phone calls from two different people, regarding three different people. The man claiming to be "Alan" had a heavy Indian/Pakistani accent, and gave me the last 4 digits of the alleged person to be checked SSN, and both times in doing so, started with one number then would say, "oh wait, it's..." whatever the number is.

A legitimate company would not call a 911 line for verification!  Also if you check out their maps for office locations, one is a mall, one is a child resource building and one is an art institute. The only legit one is the california office. Now this is not a legit corporation or their practices or illegal. Either way, they will have chraged filed against them in our county!

My voice mail clearly states that employment verifications are not done over the phone, only by fax and only on Friday with my fax number listed....They just called me 10 times in a row.  So I picked up and said to stop calling.

I AGREE 100%!!!  FAKE REVIEWS!!!!!  Every legit company needing employment verification (ie when someone is applying for a mortgage) will provide me with a form that the employee has already signed, authorizing the release of information.  It is a rare occasion that info I am asked to verify is factually incorrect.
I also believe HireRight or whatever they go by, are looking to get YOUR name -- the HR person - or whoever responds to these calls.  They already have your company, your company phone # and will be able to add a name and title if you or someone responds even with a "no one by that name works or ever worked here".

This is a legitimate company that does employment and background checks on their clients' potential employees.  You can find them at www.hireright.com.  They partner with big name companies.

The potential employee is the one telling them the information. So, if you've never heard of the person the are checking out - tell them. In some cases, they may have worked for your company 5, 10, or 20 years ago.

To clarify, they are NOT a scam, phishing, or any other illegal company.  I know this because I am a potential employee of one of their partners and they called me from this number today to verify something that I submitted.

They have called for the last three days at least twice per day. Some woman with a strange accent left a message saying that she needed a reference confirmed for Michael Anderson Miller and that she would need to know my position, his salary, and recommendation. In all sincerity I do NOT know Michael Anderson Miller. I will continue not to answer their phone calls; this sounds like a scam.

I was called 3 times by this Asian woman in a broken English accent I could hardly understand.  I could not understand what company she was from.  It appeared she knew a place  I had worked and she asked me to verify where I worked. She did not have the company name of where I work.  I asked who she was and what company was this.  She said it was employment verification .  I told her I did not apply for any job.  I also asked her who she was working for .  She said she is calling on behalf of a 3rd party to verify info on an application.  SOme transportation department?  I said I'd never apply for a job like that.  She did not have a grasp of American phone ettiquette. I told her I did not understand the name of her company and that I did not apply for any jobs and that I was hanging up.  She called back twice before I could shut off my phone.  i answered and hung up on her twice.

This number is a scam 800-993-8762. They called me, I'm an office manager at Fordham University, requesting enrollment information from our Academic program for a student. First off, they claim they graduated from our academic program in 1980 though our program was founded in the 90's. And even if they needed student enrollment information, why can't the employee request and official transcript to be sent to them directly. This is how every other company does it. No, they want it by phone or email. Get out of here! Complete scammers!

This isn't a scam. As others have said, they're a company called Hire Right. They were hired by my employer to do a background check on me, and they need to call sometimes to verify dates of hire, etc. They mixed up start & end dates with the wrong company and asked for information that I already gave them - but that's beside the point. If they are calling you asking about information that's completely incorrect, they probably got their facts wrong but they're not scammers.

This number called my place of business, at which I am a manager.  They asked one of our student operators to verify that someone had worked there.  The person they mentioned did not exist.  They then asked for the student's name, title, and then her social security number.  This company is not phishing?  Come on!

If they're a legitimate company, they need to demand that potentials give a legitimate business landline, and make sure they're not calling personal cell phones. Companies need to not contract out clearly unprofessionally handled services.

And be on the line when you call. When I say HELLO, there should be a response.

Call came in from 918-621-1131 and sent to a special extension that our corporation had to set up for solicitors, telemarketers, etc.  With the exception of clear number pronunciation, I could not get the caller's name, company she was calling from or much more.  I listened at least five times and then sent to the Human Resource Manager as I understood something about employment.

So happy that we can Google in numbers and find sites like this.  Thanks everyone for your comments.

Number requested to call back was 800-844-3586, Extension 5290.

The woman is an idiot.  She asked if this was the Court of Appeals of Maryland.  I said no, this is a private cell phone.  Then she still tried to confirm with me whether the person worked for the Court of Appeals.

They call my house multiple times a day (day after day), even after I have told them that I don't know the person they are calling to confirm employment for.  They think they are calling a company even after I told them they are calling a private home.  They don't ever get the hint and I am tired of them calling and waking up my young child early in the morning.

They are legit. I just got a call from them. I am in the process of being hired for a job at a large company. The company uses this agency to do a background check on all potential employees - very common nowadays with large companies. They called me to verify/clear up a minor detail (graduation date from college 20 years ago; there was a discrepancy between what I had put down on the background check form and what my college was reporting).  Not a big deal (at least not for me). No need to be paranoid about this one, they are for real. If it seems weird, call them and ask what's up - they already have your number, so you've got nothing to lose.

I agree they are a scam.  Called my cell phone yesterday wanting to verify employment for someone I do not know and I AM NOT AN EMPLOYER.  I figure they're trying to rip you off somewhere down the line.  And, I likewise have all my phones (home and cell) on the DO NOT CALL register!
