I agree. My receipt of these calls started in March 2013, and I'll get them every couple of days.
My experience was just as yours. I finally gave in (March 20, 2013) and wrote down their "alleged" case number, and called the number they gave me (1-866-538-2725) and spoke with an Allison. The background sounded busy like a call-center type of setup. Allison requested me to verify my last 4 digits of my SSN. I, of course refused, and requested she take me off her list and stop calling my home. She refused. Our call ended abruptly.

I'm thankful for good folks like you and for 800notes for having this service. This gives us a means of identifying these corrupt firms.

Prank Call
They are not debt collectors.  They've called me many times per week for the past month or so, even called simultaneously on both land line and cell phone.  The one time I didn't ignore the call because it looked like a local call, the person said someone was going to deliver legal documents to me the next day.  I said, that I couldn't imagine who or why and he gave me a number to call.  That number is the one where you can get into trouble.  The call is answered and there is a brief wait wihle music plays and then someone answers as if they are from a legal firm (think it was Geller, Ross and Associates, which is not legitimate) and they ask you to verify the last four digits of your SSN.  When I said I would not and that no one should be suing me for anything and that I doubted they were legitimate, they quickly hung up.  Amazingly, after only a few days, they began to call again.  I tried to get the phone company to identify who had either of the numbers but they said they belonged to no one.  So, this is a scam to try to get SSNs from folks.  Do not fall for it.  I SO hope they are caught and put away!

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

Debt Collector
Apparently, this caller is from a collection agancy trying to scare and scam by telling them they have thousands of dollars in unpaid credit card debt. They wanted to pen a 4 thousand dollar charge on me for a card I never owned. I got this call twice this week. Every collection agency I've delt with always called direct, and did not use any of the scare tactics this caller uses.

Started getting them again, couple times a week.
Answered this time and guess what, no one there.

I have a theory.....they, collectively at the organization, have a IQ that is so low no one can utter or word; or perhaps they are so stupid that once they dial the number they forget why they called
