I just received a call where the number was identified as '911'.  I didn't answer it as I didn't think the police would be contacting me for any reason using their emergency number.  The number left on the voice message - which I had to listen to five times because the accent was so strong - was listed as 919-229-4173.  The woman on the message said I had to call that number back immediately & talk to Sheriff Mariam Cooper of S. Leslie County State Police.  She also said that there was a complaint against me and that if I didn't respond immediately I would be taken to Court on charges.  These charges weren't listed nor was the area code she left a valid one (919).  I first did a reverse search and came up with nothing.  I then searched for S. Leslie County Police and found Kentucky had a county labelled such but not one of the state troopers/sheriff's offices had a number even remotely close to the number I was given.  Since I have never even been to Kentucky, I was even more convinced it was a con. When I did a search for the number, I got the warning that this call was a con & I should report it, which I am doing.

Received phone call about 1:00 pm today. My number was my mothers when she was alive. The caller who sounded Eastern Indian said he was calling for some Federal Office of a District Court (Could not understand him, his english was very poor) and he kept asking to speak to my mother by name. I told him several times she was deceased. He said there was a complaint filed against her and I needed to call Officer Jack Dawson at 919-229-4173. I asked several times what the complaint was, and he said it was for a bad check.

"Jack Dawson" (a very "creative" fake name borrowed, obviously, from Leonardo DiCaprio's character in "Titanic"), called us making the same threats posted by others on this site.  He scared the crap out of my wife, and she called me at work, sobbing.  After I heard everything from her I knew it was a scam, and told her not to worry.  However, ONE OF THESE DAYS "JACK DAWSON" IS GOING TO FRIGHTEN SOME POOR, INNOCENT PERSON TO THE POINT THAT SHE/HE WILL HAVE A HEART ATTACK... AND DIE... and "Jack" will have actually murdered someone in his greedy, scammy, slimy extortion scheme.  I wonder how he will feel then?  I hope SOMEone in law enforcement in India (where this meager excuse for a human being lives) will soon arrest this piece of cow dung and incarcerate him for the rest of his life.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

recieved an emergency call today and was told to contact officer david cooper with the missouri state police department. thinking something was wrong i called. a middle eastern sounding person who spoke very bad english is who i ended up speaking with. he said that they would be issuing a warrant for my arrest due to money i owed a loan company. he gave me a case number from 2010. i didnt have any loans during that year. when i told them i had no money and wasnt going to send them anything he told me to enjoy my life in jail. this is the second time i have had this happen. last time it was a different number but pretty much the same thing being said. they are posing as officers to instill fear and get you to do what they want. i again contacted the same lawyer as last time and they told me to block the number and not send anything. this is a scam and due to the fear of jail it works.

I've received a call and was asked to call 919-229-4173 and talk to Randy Smith. I called and Randy Smith had an Indian accent! Randy is from the IRS! I asked to talk to his supervisor but he said he's the supervisor. At this point it was very clear it was a SCAM. I proceeded to curse the crap out of him and threaten to take him to the cops. He hung up. This is the Scum of the earth!

I think it's the same scam people from the fake IRS calls they made, wicked heavy Indian accent.

I recieved a VM on my phone that showed the number as #911.  The caller stated that she was a Deputy Sherriff (Sammy Marshall) with the St Louis Criminal Investigation Depart.  A complaint against me by the Federal Crime Department & for me to call #919-229-4173 & speak with a Randy Smith. Otherwise they will send an officer to my place of employment with an arrest warrent. If I failed to reply to this message, then God Bless me and Good Luck.
I deleted & blocked the call, I doubt that blocking will help since the number showed up as 911.

I received the same call today and several other days where the caller stated he was from the Federal Crime Unit and had been assigned a case for Cash Advance against me for some pay day loan. He said his name was officer Washington. THe case he claimed was being filed in NC and like soooo many others on this web site got angry when I mentioned getting an attorney and hung up on me. I admit it really shook me up at first because I have gotten a pay day loan over six years ago and have not been able to pay it back. But its not normal business practices of pay loan companies to prosecute their customers unless actual fraud is committed. They just want the money back... Which after this call I am going to contact that company and make payment arrangements just to clear it out. Don't ever volunteer to pay something over the phone!

Ignore them.  Total scam.   For some reason the Indian scammer/extortionists love the name "spencer."  Maybe they like the character "Spenser" in the novels of Robert B. Parker.  Makes 'em feel like tuff guys.   HAHA.  An Indian tuff guy!  With a sing-song Bangli or Punjabi or Urdu voice.  Right.

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

I got a message that there was a miscalculation in the tax number and that if I don't pay up 900 dollars they will arrest me.
I ended up paying because I was too scared of the situation.
But here are the clues that will help people determine that they are fraud.
1. They will be very aggressive in the beginning but once they know that you are ready to pay they will try to be nice to you.
2. They will ask you the zip code of location where you are at the time of call and then will tell you the addresses of local pharmacies in your area
3. They will insist on buying green dot money back dots and will ask you to scratch the code. IRS never accept any payment like this

Ask them specific question so that you know they are fraud

1. Ask them what exactly is the miscalculation in tax. They will not have answers
2. Ask them how much is the income in tax return they have. They will not know because they are fraud
3. Pick a year when you were not in US and ask them if there is any penalty for that year. They will tell you a number for that as well which proves that they are cheats.

They are targeting new immigrants who are not aware of their rights. I have seen that they are targeting a lot of new Indian Migrants.

Also I somehow got a sense that even the callers were from India who were trying to fake their accents.

An Indian trying to con another Indian in USA. This is pathetic
