Did you not read my 10 May 2011 reply to David at the top of page 1 of this thread where I said "If they've remoted into your PC, the safest fix is to re-format your drive and re-install your OS assuming you have clean backups of your data. You can try scanning with various antivirus software but scanning may not find all the malware. If you don't know how, get help from friends or pay a local shop to do it." ? Also try to stay off the net because installed malware, if they exist, may try to call home or ship your files out. Don't use your PC to log into anything (bank, facebook, whatever); if you did, use a trusted friend's uninfected PC to change logins, security Q&As, contact email address, etc., immediately, it's now a race to regain control of your account(s). BTW, there are rootkits that are really difficult to detect and if it rooted in the master boot record, reformatting the drive and reinstalling the OS won't help either, you'll need professional help. Have a nice day.  :)

How about a helpful response, instead of an insulting one.  I know that some of you like to feel ever so superior to others, but lets face it, people sometimes make mistakes, I'm sure you do too 2easy2fool.

Got a call from a guy calling himself Ron Barral, Employee ID MSO145 claiming to be representing Microsoft.  He gave me his phone number as 786-738-5060.  He said he was acting on behalf of Microsoft and asked for remote control of my computer.  I allowed this, and now I don't know what to do.  I am afraid I will be seriously hacked now.  The caller ID simply said "Unavailable" for the number.

I became suspicious as soon as he started talking about stocking keys and the need for warranties I supposedly had before but have no more, etc.

What do I do.

This sounds *identical* to the outfit that was spoofing their phone number as 91797 (which 800notes will not allow past an edit check) last month (May 2011) here in Calgary.  Thick East Indian accent and my computer "reporting errors".

91797 was very persistent - calling 5 times between May 24th and May 27th.  This is my first call from 926-754-3277 so I expect they will call again tomorrow around 10:30.

If they do, and I catch it, I will play the mice very cruelly.

So... This exact number called my grandmother today. They didn't say anything about computers... They stated that it was her son Brian and that he was in a car accident and needed $3000. She totally believed it was him and was so worried. She told him she didn't have it but would call family members and so on. I saw a show about this a couple months ago.

I will I could find these people. It would be a very bad day for them if I could.

Talk to the seniors in your family about these scams. If you dont they could very well be the next victim

Totally agree dude!  You know its a scam, might as well make them stir crazy.  I made them teach me how to use the computer... totally acted baffled by the whole windows menu... And yes this is a scam, they are trying to remote control your computer... just don't do anything on your computer. LOL

Got a call from them today told them I have no issues with my computer.

My friend was not so lucky with this number and was scammed.  They said they were from Microsoft and sounded official.  She gave control over to the person on the phone who loaded a virus on their machine then said look you have a virus.  Then said for a $170 they would load a anti virus protection then asked for her visa number.  She refused and said that she needed to talk to her husband before spending that kind of money, they said fine and gave her a number to contact back.  After she hung up this person who still had control of her computer shut her computer down and put it in a safe mode not allowing her to get back on her computer. She was able to get access into her machine only after having a professional fix it.  Had to change all her personal information (ie bank account info) which was on the machine.

This is a scam!

Today was PC Fix but got a call a few days ago same thing from PC Doctor - computer running slow may have virus. I told him I was reporting him and never to call again but I told that to other guy too. Both guys (thick Indian accents) sounded almost hurt that I would accuse their call as being a scam.

Warn all the Luddites in your life not to fall for this.

I just received a call from this number.  I picked up and heard it ringing to another telephone, so I hung up.  They called back shortly after using the number 123-456-7890.  I googled this number and it appears to be a telemarketing company.

This is a scam-they try to tell you that your computer is sending out junk mail but they don't know your email or ip  info- they'll try to get your info from you and sell you something to "fix" a problem that doesn't exist. They hang up when you ask them for your email or IP info.

As Mrs B said, sounded like an Indian call center, they tried to ask if my computer was slow, and I innocently said no.  After he tried a couple things he thanked me for my time, which is when I asked why he was trying to scam people.  He took great offense and yelled at me for two or three minutes.  I thought it funny.  But it's definitely a scam.  His defensiveness is merely more evidence.

Just got 2 calls in a short time span from this number. A man with an indian accent knew my full name (even though it isn't listed) then proceeded to ask what I had for breakfast and if he could come out with me tonight. I repeatedly asked who it was and got laughter and more questions in response. Finally hung up on him because It just seemed like a prank phone call. he didn't even try and sell me anything.

It's one of those "PC repair" scams.  Sounds like an Indian call centre, where they claim to be calling because your computer is sending errors and they want to help fix it.  Total scam.
