caller ID shows the number 718-307-5672 sounded like a recorded message from man with indian accent telling me I was going to be sued if my attorney or I did call them back @ 929-268-1973.  If they worked as hard at a real job as they do trying to scam people out of money it would be nice. Like others have posted before, I like messing with them......they do get real upset when you question them.

Got this call today. They didn't ask for anyone and didn't give any company info. Said they were going to sue me and garnish my wages and also said they had my social security number. They said if I didn't call this number back then they would sue me and garnish my wages and then they hung up. The number they told me to call is 929-268-1973

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

? filed under: Press Release

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

My husband just got this threatening message on his cell today . Same guy with a thick Indian accent claiming to be from a law firm and threatening to sue him and garnish his wages if he or his attorney didn't call back that number. He got upset until I listened to the message and told him it sounded like the same guy who keeps calling to tell me that
I am owed big money from a botched surgery. Only I never had a botched surgery. These beauties call from a blocked number. I wish  government would crack down on these lowlife scum that make a living preying on people.

It's obviously a scam. The part I find to be a dead give away: How many Eastern Indians have the surname Jacobs? The caller probably is trying to portray himself to be a ferocious Jewish Attorney (with an Indian accent LOL!!!)

I got a call from this number and because, I do not know the number, I let "it" (the caller) go to voice-mail. The message I get is definitely from an Indian accented male in a telemarketing room (loud).  The guy is threatening me with a legal complaint stating I owe a debt of "some sort" and that my wages are going to be garnished all while in sputtering english; you know  it's actually funny if it didn't convince some people they owed a phony debt.  It's a phony scam and one one they call actually owes a debt. Do NOT take this craziness seriously.

Got the same call from 929-268-1973 yesterday saying if I didn't call back, they would sue me and my social security#.  Must be a scam.  I found the hone # to be located in NY.  Last time I got a similar call, it was from the "Pa State Police", but I googled the number, and it was from NY city.  Funny how the state police from Pa would call from NY.  I will file the number.

I got the same BS message, in fact I have been being pursued by this type of call for almost 3 years now. Every time I get a call I ask who they are and what their location is, and they cannot seem to provide me with a physical address. I also contacted my local police department with them on the line, and they of course hung up. It is illegal for a collection agency to threaten to sue. Total scam and I DONT EVENT GIVE THEM ANY OF MY INFORMATION. These people hi-jack US phone numbers to appear as thought they are local when they are actually over seas. I wish I knew how to get these people to stop harassing me!!!!

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

I am so glad I googled this #! I too got a voice mail message from a Indian or Middle Eastern man saying that they received my information and were going to sue me to garnish my wages if I didn't call them back. I couldn't understand some of what he said and only caught part of the phone # I was supposed to call (and was not the # he called from). I googled debt collection attorneys in area code 929 and lo and behold I find this!! Awesome.....

I have been unemployed and owe money to various entities but trying to get it worked out with them. I have never had any of them leave a message as threatening as this was even though they can be nasty anyway. Read all the comments here and I feel so much better.

Last evening I also received a call from 929-268-1973 from a William Jacobs at Brown and Schmidt Law Firm. He advised me that I owed a payday loan company $489 before they start tacking on the attorney fees.  I advised him that I did not have a payday loan with the companies that he named. I have been hasseled by these companies for the past fourt (4) years. It seems like it never stops. I did advise him that I would be turning over his name, phone number and phone call to the FTC.  I have turned the information over to the WA State Attorney General as well.

His accent was very very thick Indian.  When I told him that I would be turning over his name to the authorities he only could say ok and then hung up.  These people are such scavengers and prey on people that are cash strapped as well.  They all should be hung.  Even the local authorities advised me that it is very hard to track these guys down.  They all should be
taken out and HUNG!.

Hopefully they eventually will all get caught and put away!

I just got a call from this guy with the heavy Indian accent. Said if I didn't call him back at 929-268-1973 by the end of the day they were going to sue me under section 25 (???) and garnish my wages. You can't garnish SSI!!!!! He is just one reason I do not answer my phone if I do not know who the caller is.
