repeated calls on caller I.D.
| Shannon 2010-06-23 01:37:48 Unknown |
My wife received the same call on Sunday, June, 20th. He left the name Scott Reid and told her that his grandpa had given him our name and that he said we were real good people and would help him out. He would not tell her what he needed exactly but said that he needed to speak with me that day. He called right in the middle of our worship service. I reurned his call and was almost going to help him and told him that I would need to speak with one of our elders and I would call him back. Thankfully, my dad said that I should google his number and sure enough it was a scam. It is so sad that people can be so deceitful, it really ruins it for all those good, honest people who are out of work and really have legitimate needs. People like this make us sceptical of everyone. By the way, he has moved outside of the TN area because our church is located in North Georgia.

I had the same thing happen today. He was pretty convincing and to be honest I almost fell for it. He told me his Gradpa told him to call me and that I was a nice guy that would help him out. I told him I didn't know his Grandpa and then he said well he knew of me and my family and that we were good people that would help him. I wondered but wanted to help him. I told him to call back later and let me see what I could do. Thank God I did....the office manager where I work googled the phone number and found this page telling about him. He actually did call back and when he did I told him I was on to him and what was on here....he hung up on me. the nerve of some people....he need help and should go to jail for scamming people like that!!!!!!!! I have no idea how he got my name and number.....that was crazy!!!!

Received a call with similar story. Stated name was Clevenger, needed money to travel from Rogersville, TN back to Hohenwald. Declined to offer the help. Thanks for these posts.

IT IS A SCAM!! We have checked it out. They are calling all over and people are sending them FREE money

THIS IS A SCAM. We are in Hohenwald TN. A local Pastor just called my husband who is a Pastor and stated that it is a scam. Some people have already sent them money. Similar story a little different. If you send money by walmart it is my understanding that you can pick it up at any Wal Mart store. Someone is making some easy money. Not to mention what it costs to send it.

Shawn called our church in Oregon, and was asking us to wire money to a Town & Country store in Humboldt. He said he lives in Wilsonville, Oregon and was needing gas money to come home. Other than that, his story matched everything said above. He said that his grandfather has no money, and he has no other family to call on. He also said that he can't get any money from anyone in Humboldt because of a recent flood (which is true). I was going to give him a list of churches local to Humboldt, but he hung up.
After this, I called the Town and Country store as well as the Walmart listed in the first story. Neither of the managers knew anything about Shawn, and they both felt it was a scam.

My story is exactly the same story as the first one!!! We laughed that anyone would think I have money as right now I'm not even working!!! LOL Anyway, my pastor said he was sure it was a scam, and there you have it.

I am the Pastor at a church outside Knoxville and recieved a message to call this same number to a Shawn McClain back. It would seem like the caller is calling a lot of people.

Denise, there was a message on our church answering machine from this same number and name today, 5-26. We are in East Tennessee, not far from Knoxville. Not sure about the validity of the story, but it is not unheard of that someone will call a church asking for money to be wired to a Wal-Mart somewhere far enough away that no real confirmation of the story can be made. Not sure how someone like this would have gotten your son's name. My guess is that they are confusing him with someone else; perhaps he has the same name as a local preacher? Did they mention knowing your son's age or knowing anything about him?
Most likely they are calling numerous numbers, hoping to get a hit.

received a call asking for my 17 year old son. How they got his name and my number is beyond me. Said they were in Hulboldt County. Caller identified himself as Shawn McClain. HE claims that he had called his grandfather for help and that his grandfather is the one that gave him our sons name and number. We do not know these people at all.He claimed that his truck had broken down on their way home, which was supposedly hauling wooden flooring.(he and his pregnant wife). He said that they had just enough money to get the truck fixed, but it left them with no money for gas. Also said, they were stuck in a Wal-mart parking lot and needed money sent via money gram to that Wal-mart. That he had spoken with the mgr. of walmart and the mgr had agreed to let them spend the night in the parking lot if they needed to. I smell SCAM, and I'm worried about how they got my son's name!!!!!!!!!!!
