I got a call from these guys a week ago.  I immediately smelled a rat.  Person insisted they were not selling anything, just doing a energy survey.  I answered a few questions (stupid of me) and I pointedly asked 'you are not going to call back and try to sell me water filtration, air filtration, right?"  They said oh no, just a survey.  The questions had nothing to do with energy.

They called me last night and said I had won a $70 gas card.  I knew it was a hook but played along.  They wanted to immediately send someone and drop off the card.  I said no so they asked if they could drop it off in the morning.  I said fine and the caller immediately tried to act all excited that I had won some other coupon book or time share vacation too.  Right at the end she said I would need to listen to a one hour presentation of some mold filtration device.   Told me they would send a young person (kept saying this) to demo it.   Nail in the coffin as far as scammer detector.

They had my name and address from some list.  I didn't give it to them.

Just before this person was supposed to show up, I got in the car and left for 1.5 hours.  They called while I was gone.   Called again when I returned but didn't pick up.

I'm in the Boulder County area.

Just got a 3rd call in 2 days from Indoor Air Research. I told the girl we are on Do Not Call list but she insisted she can call because she is not selling anything. In fact, she is screening us for an in-home sales pitch for an over-priced filter her sister company, TVA, sells. This is, in fact, a violation of state and federal laws.

These guys put a scratch card in the Sunday paper.  You scratch off the surface to see if you have won a prize.  Thinking that you have won something, you respond.  Not a good idea in the long run.

Just received a phone call from them. They say if we listen to their salesmen for 2 hours they will give us a $40 gas rebate. I'm not interested. My time is worth more than that. I don't want an overpriced dirt sucker. I live in Pueblo County, CO

Indoor Air Research LLC misrepesents themselves as a marketing research company. They use the call as an opportunity to sell products which is unethical and illegal, "sugging" selling under the guise of research. They are owned by Donovan Adfield, who also owns Treasure Valley Air (TVA) in Fort Collins, Colorado.   Indoor Air Research called our home in 2012 representing themselves as a legitimate marketing research company. They are in no way a marketing research company, they simply ask questions with the goal of getting into your home to give you a cheap prize, which results in a sales demonstration for a very expensive small appliance.

They also ignored my past request from 2012 to be removed from their calling list.  I am going to lodge yet another complaint with the State of Colorado Attorney General's office regarding the Do Not Call list.  IAR promoted that they were members of the BBB, which just devalues the reputation of the BBB for not investigating their business.   I am lodging a complaint with the BBB also.

It's a scam. This company is Indoor Air Research of Colorado (IAR). They are owned by Donovan Adfield, who also owns Treasure Valley Air (TVA) in Fort Collins, Colorado. Phone numbers are constantly changing to stay ahead of websites like this. TVA works in several states.

How the scam works: Donovan purchases large lists of phone numbers. IAR calls people on those lists to tell them they won a contest (or some other pretext). The response rate is surprisingly high. Preferred marks are old people in suburban and rural areas, preferably lonely, extremely gullible, and wealthy. IAR conducts a telephone survey, which is legal, but only uses the information to qualify potential buyers of overpriced air filters and vacuum cleaners (i.e., homeowners, married, both employed; if you tell IAR you rent or are unemployed, they probably won't call you again, at least until they purchase the next number set). The survey angle somehow allows Donovan to get around Do Not Call lists, even though the results of the survey are used exclusively by TVA for commercial purposes. For those suckers who bite on the survey angle, TVA then calls to set up a demonstration and sales pitch for the overpriced air filters in exchange for claiming the prize. The prize is cheap junk, like a digital camera that doesn't work, an mp3 player that dumps adware on your system, cheap steak knives, a discount on an overpriced vacation to a timeshare resort in the middle of nowhere, etc.

The person who comes in your home to sell you the overpriced air filter and vacuum is a commissioned and poorly trained sales person who won't get paid unless he / she makes the sale; even then, Donovan takes a pretty big cut unless the items are sold at or close to asking price. The term "aggressive" is not strong enough to describe the tactics used; anything to make a sale, so to speak. Getting a job there is pretty easy. Keeping it is harder. Every few weeks TVA hires a bunch of fresh salespeople through Craigslist so that they will sell to friends and family. Most wash out in a few days; a few have been there for a while.

They are fun to mess with, especially if you tell them you are a retired smoker on a fat pension with a bunch of dogs and an asthmatic family... and of course that you own your home.

Enjoy.

Caller addresses you by first name. Claims to be doing an energy survey. First question is do you have energy star appliances. Stopped him at the point and told him I wasn't interested in helping out with any surveys.
I might add--the last time I had a call starting with a tangible item survey, they ended up trying to sell me an off-brand tractor.
Not sure if it was legit, but getting tired of sales calls disguised as a survey.
