Got a call from "Gary Horton" today who introduced himself as an "associate" of my boss.  I questioned him about the alleged "association" - and of course one thing turned into another and that man got MEAN (not as mean as me though).  As both me and my employer are Veterans of the Armed Services, I find this highly offensive and disrespectful.  If I had a physical address or fax number, I'd gladly reduce to writing to this company exactly what I think about it.  And "Gary", should you read this, you might want to tone it down a bit and be a little more forthright if you ever expect to perform any meaningful service for the company who is paying you.

Said his name was Nick Wright, an attorney from Dallas collecting for the Shriners for contributions. Sounds fishy. Private attorney calling from home but I could hear a call bank in the background. Works in call centers - knows the noise.

I was incorrect about the call being from the Shriners. It was from a telemarketer in the DFW area who spoofs their number and name. They call for F rated charities that include AMVETS, Paralyzed Veterans of America and others. AMVETS claims they help pay expenses while families of deceased veterans are waiting for insurance to pay off. I don't believe they do much to help anyone. Also, beware of charities that "supply basic essentials" to veterans. It's a complete farce. Toothbrushes? TP?

The last two times the Shriners called, the pickup of the check didn't happen. This is a concern since we have drug dealers/identify theft people picking up trash and selling illegal drugs carhop style around us. Even when called, they didn't pick up the check. The bi*** of it is, I'm a Shriner, too.

Wouldn't it be great to set a flash mob of callers to call their number all day? I mean just for fun. It wouldn't have any real effect other than a steam relief for we who are sick of them. But there isn't an easy way to get a mob together. If I think of something, I'll post it and create a website and put ads on Facebook.

I think the poor saps that call, probably are desperate men looking for any pay check. They must make next to nothing. So, let's direct our ill will or prayers if you're a positive person towards the fat cats that run the outfit and profit off desperate mean and well-meaning innocent civilians. Anybody have a favorite legitimate veterans charity?

Also, I'm not sure of the legitimacy of this website on which we are posting comments.

Shriners -- same as WCM -- I have donated and never had a problem...the guy that calls just gets a bit chatty, which can be annoying when you are in the middle of something.

Shirners people looking for money.  I donate since it's for kids but that's what they are calling for.  You tell them the amount $25.00 to ???  and leave the check (deposit only on the back to Shirners) under the door mat and they will drop a receipt off and you get the tax deduction.  I've done if for years and trust them.

They say they collect for various entities but they will not take a check by mail. They will only send a volunteer directly to your home to collect money. Just stay away.

Got a call from Sgt. Macafee yesterday. Same phone number 972-702-2979 was left to return a call. No mention as to what the business was about. Nothing. After reading the other posts I'm not calling them back either. Another thing, they don't want you to mail them a donation because that would be mail fraud. A Federal offense. Thanks for the postings.

My caller ID for a call from 972-445-8529 said L. Jones.  I believe these are probably paid fundraisers.  I once inquired how much of the money I gave ended up with the charity and it was a very small portion of the total amount.  They don't want you to send a check directly to the charity because then they don't get their cut.

I just spoke with an officer Christian today and she's asking for a one time donation of $300.00 dollars or a $50.00 ( Hero donation). They are also using the following number, 972-702-2979.

That person now identifies himself as "Officer Davis", but the caller ID now shows the last name to be Cunningham.  He says he doesn't want to leave a message on this phone.

The tone and title are deceptive in that they make you believe they are calling on official business, but then they ask for money.

Says they are from the American Veterans Fund. They refuse to accept a donation via a letter mailed through the post office - Instead they want to send a courier to your home pick it up!! That is a bit fishy and makes me think it is a scam. Any legitimate charity would be glad to accept a donation through mail.
