Debt Collector
Got a call yesterday from these folks that my 80 year old mother wrote a bad check to ACE check cashing service in the amount of $515 at some point in time.  If you only knew my Mom.  :)   They could prevent legal action from being instituted, but I needed to resolve it before 3pm today.  Yeah right!  I told them to institute away!

I did ask for a "validation notice "They said they would email me infomation by refused to mail anything (b/c of the 3pm deadline).

The disturbing thing:  They had a lot of infomation.  Past addresses, phone numbers.  Stuff you could get from a credit report.

The sad thing:  this must work with some people -- they are preying on the eldery and that's just sick.

Cant wait for the next call from them -- have my air horn next the phone.

i just got this call, they actually called my 77 year old mother scaring her to death telling her that im going to jail. i called the number back and the 'lady' was rude when i told her i didn't think it was her place to give my personal business to another individual. she jumped to attack/ghetto mode and told me that i was going to jail before the afternoon is up. I dont believe that i have an outstanding debt of this type, but if i did i would think they would've mailed something to me since ive lived in the same place for years?

Well folks...this just happened to me too.  They said the name of the company was Legal Mediation Services, said I had a fraudulent payday loan,etc...all which was false.  If I did not see these posts during initial phone call, I might have given them my info.  So thank you for sharing!  They do make it sound so legit so be careful.  Also, I asked them for their address and they gave me an office building number in Dallas.  I contacted the building and they told me they do not have that company as clients. Ridiculous!!

After a few minutes or, I told them that the FBI had already contacted me, and they have traced the call to their location and would be flying to your country to arrest them. The woman asked "How do they know, I am in Africa?" and then hung-up immediately.

i received a call from this number today. the  person stated that i was being taken to court on fraud charges concerning the check mate ccompany. the had most of my information but did not have my bank account number. they made that part up. i did alot of checking and discovered that they are cheating people out of money all over the country. if you get a call from this company, DO NOT TELL THEM ANYTHING! i have found out that they are based out of dallas texas. i am now on a personal vendeta to put them out of business. THEY HAVE MESSED WITH THE WRONG PERSON! when i called them back to tell them that i knew they were a fraud and not to call me again, the man on the phone laughed at me and stated he would call me everyday. how do people like this sleep at night? THESE PEOPLE ARE GOING DOWN!

I just got a call from them as well, they left a message saying charges are being brought against me in indiana gave me a case number and a number to call back. I've filed bankruptcy because my identity was stolen so legally no one can call me asking about money for a debt.

I immediately called back and it took me to a voicemail. I called back again and the voicemail said it was "Laura Hogan with claims" so i left a message with my first name and telephone number. I decided to call back 3 more times and it went straight to voicemail like someone was ignoring the call. I called back 3 more times and it did the same thing. Then i called back and this "emma' girl answered and i said someone just called me saying to call back because there are charges against me. She said well i dont know who called you it must have been our investigators. I said okay well i filed bankruptcy so you can't legally call me anyway and she said oh. I said i looked your number up online and you're a fraud company, its sad what you're doing and she hung up.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

I received a phone call from them AFTER they somehow got my exwife's phone number.  It was a Detective Shaw calling saying he was calling from Shaw, Newman and Assc in Dallas, Tx at 601 Elm Street, Suite 7B.  I googled the address and it is a Building that says Dallas County Services Building and looks abandoned.  They refused to fax me any of the paperwork for the "Payday Loan" from Mycashnow.com to which they said it was taken out from in 2010.  Please Beware of this Number.  They would not send me any written documents at all

I am so glad I seen your post Tony. I was FREAKING OUT! The message sounds so legit. I've received a call like this in the last few months, but fortunately, after me asking them a few questions, ex:Can i get some documentation showing that I actually owe this? The guy literally started stuttering. He was caught off guard & stated that "I probably didn't have the money anyway." I was about to give $500 over the phone, with my CC. The call had me so scared, I wasn't thinking rational. But Thank you so much for your post.

Received call from an Emma Cogan. Stated I was facing legal action including a federal warrant for my arrest. Called my attorney who called them and indicated this is a FRAUD! They have gotten away with scamming people out of money.

NOTE: they sound totally legit! Past information is used. BE CAREFUL! I almost fell for it.
