Exactly. A woman who targeted seniors in the Atlanta area using the same scam will be spending the next few decades of her life in prison:

The woman who defrauded senior citizens out of thousands of dollars under the alias ?Georgia Powers? was sentenced Friday to 43 years in prison.

A DeKalb County jury earlier this month found Santee Roberts, 36, guilty of violating Georiga?s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, identity fraud, financial transaction fraud and elder exploitation.

According to prosecutors, Roberts identified herself as a Georgia Power representative to 86 DeKalb residents, with a significant number being over 65 years old.

DeKalb District Attorney Robert James said in an e-mail that Roberts ?purchased a cell phone and registered it under the alias ?Georgia Powers? and began targeting seniors.?

?When a victim would check the caller ID, it would read similar to the local power company,? James said.

Roberts, who has never worked for Georgia Power, would then demand payment for utility services and threaten to interrupt the victim?s electricity if the victim didn?t comply, according to James.

Roberts was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Courtney Johnson to 43 years, with 20 years to be served behind bars.

Telemarketer
A woman from this phone number called my 87 year old mother and identified herself as an employee of Tampa Electric Company.  Told her that the electric bill hadn't been paid in four months and she needed to make a payment immediately or the service would be cut off.  My mother was hysterical when she called me to tell me this.  To make a long story short, I called the number and got some guy speaking a bunch of gibberish about "the meter" and how it wasn't registering the right information for billing purposes.  Then he wanted ME to verify the name and address on the account.  I refused and told him he needed to verify it to me, not the other way around.  Then, he started rattling off address where I could go buy a money card and make a payment.  I basically told him to go piss up a rope.  By the way, this was all in Spanish and I could hear a call center environment in the background.

I called Tampa Electric Co. and they verified it's a total scam.  They target old people and Hispanics.  Whenever a call center location is discovered and the cops show up, they've already moved and there's no one to arrest.

I'm reporting this to the BBB.  If this happens to you, BEWARE.  Do not give them any money.  They are scammers of the worst kind.
